It has been confirmed that the Cloverfield and Let Me In director has signed up to helm the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes after Rupert Wyatt decided not to return for the follow-up. Read on for further details.

It's official! After reports last week that Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), J Blakeson (The Disappearance Of Alice Creed), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter), Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy), Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible and Rian Johnson (Looper) were all in talks to helm Dawn Of The Planet of the Apes, it is Reeves who has officially signed on to direct. Deadline has broken the news, and while Reeves was always the frontrunner (especially after dropping out of Warner Bros.' The Twilight Zone) and is expected to still deliver the film for the planned May 23rd, 2014 release date.

Damn, I was really hoping for Jeff Nichols after seeing Take Shelter. Oh well, we'll see I guess.

Mysterion - 10/1/2012, 12:37 PM
My choice was Del Toro but Matt Reeves is also a solid choice. "Let Me In" ruled!!!
mattattack - 10/1/2012, 12:46 PM
Cloverfield was ASS, the only reason why im semi intrigued (but still ehhhh) is due to "Let Me In".
TheFox - 10/1/2012, 12:47 PM
Nice! The guy is a great filmmaker, and I look forward to seeing what he does with this franchise! Sure, he has a lot to live up to after the last film, but I'm sure he's up to the task.

I love, love, LOVE Cloverfield, so I'm actually really happy with this choice. Still wish Wyatt would return, though.

Let Me In was one of the better "We can make it better in America" movies of the last decade.
jasonicus - 10/1/2012, 1:39 PM
Good choice. I am relieved by this news.
grambo90 - 10/1/2012, 2:25 PM
I personally think this could be good news! Yeah its not Rupert Wyatt & yeah it may not be quite as good as ROTOPA buttt out of the list given I think he best suits this film.
Rothwilder - 10/1/2012, 3:06 PM
Awesome news. Love both.

Eh...what a wasted opportunity. Cloverfield sucked.

Why do people got to hate on Matt Reeves? Put all that hateration out the window, because this movie is going to officially rule now
TheSnuggler - 10/1/2012, 5:54 PM
I would have much rather preferred for Wyatt to have returned, but I'll see what Reeves can do.

WOOOO! I'm pumped about this, Reeves is a great director just hasn't had too many opportunities to show it. Hopefully he brings his friends over at Bad Robot to the party, that would be amazing.
NostalgicYouth - 10/1/2012, 11:42 PM
No, true
ChaosLord - 10/2/2012, 12:19 PM

Cloverfield is my favorite giant monster movie and Let Me In was good. He's a very good director.
GodzillaKart - 10/10/2012, 1:18 PM
Let Me In was fantastic, and although I really don't like the hand held camera movies, Cloverfield was interesting. DOTPOTA is a different kind of movie, but I think it is in good hands.
