PACIFIC RIM Animated Series Will Have Long Story Arcs

PACIFIC RIM Animated Series Will Have Long Story Arcs

The website, Collider, recently chatted with Guillermo del Toro ("Hellboy") about Pacific Rim 2 and the upcoming Pacific Rim animated series. Check it out.

While doing some more press for The Strain, Guillermo del Toro chatted with Collider chatted with the director about Pacific Rim 2 and Pacific Rim the animated series. During the discussion del Toro revealed that he'll begin prepping the Pacific Rim sequel in August. The original film grossed over $400M at the worldwide box office, but carried with it a hefty budget. How much of a profit it cleared it still up for debate. Then there is the animated series, which del Toro formally announced several weeks ago. Guillermo tells Collider, he is negotiating with Japanese companies for the animation and is still in the process of selecting showrunners and putting together a writer's room. Characters from the first film will make cameos in the animated series and fans should expect new jaegers as well as new kaijus.

“We’re going for a long arc, so the idea is to show a group of characters—we have pilots, functional jaegers, but we have all these younger characters.  I really want to explore things that are complimentary to the things that I want to explore in the second movie: drift, what drifting does to you, what is needed to drift, a lot of stuff that I think is important, but also the jaeger technology, the kaijus being evolved, ideas about the precursors—the guys that control the kaijus.  We have a lot of leeway in 13 episodes and I wanna make it sort of in the same spirit of Pacific Rim, which is the ideal audience for Pacific Rim was young—very young, 11-year-olds and so forth—but with really beautiful design and stories that make these characters interesting in a way that I found them interesting in, for example, Year Zero, the graphic novel that we did.  And I think that’s the basic thrust of the thing.”

“If it connects we’ll go on [to more seasons], but the thing is I don’t want it to be weekly adventures.  I don’t want it to be like Chapter One is a little action thing and it gets resolved in 40 minutes or an hour and then the next episode, [it’s like] nothing happened.  My favorite anime series always have a long arc.” - Guillermo del Toro

PACIFIC RIM 2 Will Land In Theaters April 7, 2017

PACIFIC RIM SYNOPSIS - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro, from a script written by Travis Beacham. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. Now available on DVD & Blu-ray!

I really hope the show becomes a hit.
I am guessing the art style will be heavily influenced by anime
NovaCorpsFan - 7/10/2014, 12:41 PM
Long story arcs? Say goodbye to the pre-teen audience!
Spidey91 - 7/10/2014, 12:43 PM
I'm really interested in this show.
I know it's early, but I'd like to see some concept art. will they go for a more anime-esque approach?
nibs - 7/10/2014, 12:44 PM
Can't wait to have this one stop airing mid-way through the season!
gaikinger - 7/10/2014, 12:45 PM

Sitterson - 7/10/2014, 12:46 PM
Sounds great. Such great news overall for Pacific Rim fans. A sequel, animated show, and a continuation of the graphic novels!
Gusto - 7/10/2014, 12:52 PM
I hope they include the St. Louis jaegar in this one.
He patrols the Lake of The dong at a time.

Humperdink - 7/10/2014, 1:01 PM
Oh know, I think an animated series could work REALLY well.
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:04 PM
hahahahahhahahahahaha Gusto. Jurk.
Humperdink - 7/10/2014, 1:04 PM

Yeah, we're all familiar with Pasto's unusual posting etiquette at this point.
Either too little information, or too much of someone elses.

His articles will inevitably have a 15-30 minute shelf-life.

Sorry Pasto, it's true.
Bl00dwerK - 7/10/2014, 1:04 PM
I'll watch it...
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:05 PM
Wait...was my comment offensive nails?
EhMaybeSays - 7/10/2014, 1:06 PM
Del Toro has so many works he's attached to, yet he goes for the least creative option.
Gusto - 7/10/2014, 1:06 PM
Well, now mine doesn't make any sense!
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:07 PM
Doesn't stop you from being a jurk now does it gusto?
Gusto - 7/10/2014, 1:08 PM

Poor misunderstood Pasto.
MrDeadRabbit - 7/10/2014, 1:09 PM
Transformers is just such a master piece that fat del toro just made a cheap copy of Bay movies and failed miserably at it. Pacific Rim is so badly crafted that it strugled to make its production budget back. Del toro is one of the most overhyped director of our time. Bay delivers and del toro only promises. That is why PacificRim will never be a franchise as big as Transformers is
SuperCat - 7/10/2014, 1:10 PM
I hope the sequel is as good as the first. Please don't screw with the budget, WB!
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:10 PM
I don't know anything about Pacific Rim. But I did go to the barber for a specific trim earlier.
Abary - 7/10/2014, 1:11 PM
I totally agree with you Nail. Not every article needs to go into a lot of detail such as yours (great article BTW) but his was literally JUST the quotes with one single use of "Guillermo del Toro said."
Abary - 7/10/2014, 1:12 PM
BYE whysoserious295! We'll (not) miss you sincerely!
SpiderFraud - 7/10/2014, 1:12 PM
I don't even like Del Toro movies that much, but Pacific Rim is my shizz. Cant wait to see them do some world building with this property.
ekrolo2 - 7/10/2014, 1:13 PM
Josh must be banging his head against the wall xD
Humperdink - 7/10/2014, 1:13 PM

^ I loved this scene.
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:14 PM
And by barber I think you all know what I mean.
SuperCat - 7/10/2014, 1:15 PM
Lol @ TheAbaryMan

That's cold, man!
MrDeadRabbit - 7/10/2014, 1:17 PM
the only thing that could save a Pacific Rim franchise is if Toho Studios aloud to do a crossover with Godzilla. The two movies were awful but making the zilla battle it out with the jaeggers could be the only redeeming factor of this awful awful movie. Warners should be smart and hire a talent such as Semekiz or Bay, maybe even Cameron for a movie like this but Del toro has not what is needed
MrDeadRabbit - 7/10/2014, 1:22 PM
Pacific Rim is just an evangelion poor mans. Del Toro is overhyped that is why his movies have never been huge blockbusters
SuperCat - 7/10/2014, 1:26 PM
Lmao!!! @ RebelVulcan
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:28 PM
hahahahahaha Copy and Paste-o!

McGee - 7/10/2014, 1:30 PM
I've read enough of the comments in the cosplay articles to know that people really... REALLY like to f*ck with nail. Hahaha!

Why? There has to be a back story here. It can't be something as simple as him being the most lenient, affable power user and people mistaking that for weakness. That makes too much sense.
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:31 PM
@McGee - Really? I don't go to the cosplay articles much so I don't get to witness that. I know folks hate Josh and they hate Nails too? Who do we like? Anyone?
RetroFit - 7/10/2014, 1:33 PM
Who cares. Of all the ideas Del Toro has been tossing around over the past 10 years, this is the least interesting or original of the bunch.
cipher - 7/10/2014, 1:33 PM
I don't really check out the cosplay articles, either, so I have no clue what goes on there.
McGee - 7/10/2014, 1:34 PM
Copy and Pasto is your new nick name Copy-and-Pasto.
yossarian - 7/10/2014, 1:40 PM
Who is predatorrising?

I don't even read Mantinum's comments anymore. I can't decode 4/5th of his ramblings and what I do understand is just...beyond rationale.

I got no beef with BJ. I got no beef with anyone. Ya'll are names and avatars on the internet.
McGee - 7/10/2014, 1:40 PM
Yoss...we should make up a fictional Power User who's "cool" and occasionally compare real Power Users, unfavorably, to him in conversation.

"Whatever Josh...SpudzMcKenzie05 does better articles than you and is nicer."

Ciph...chaos happens!

cipher - 7/10/2014, 1:42 PM
I think we can all agree that I add absolutely nothing of value around here.
