Producer Says X-FILES 3 Still Doesn't Have A Script; Expects Fox To Reboot The TV Show

While chatting about his most recent show, BBC's Hunted, producer Frank Spotnitz was asked about the status of X-Files 3. He reveals that the film still doesn't have a script, but he is certain of the plot if it were ever made. Hit the jump to check it out.

Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Frank Spotnitz, and Chris Carter have all expressed interest in making a third X-Files movie, but so far Fox has been extremely quiet on the matter. No greenlight in sight. While the first featured film did $190 million at the worldwide box office, the second film struggled with a measly $68 million.

The website Den of Geeks caught up with Frank Spotnitz, who worked on the show for eight of its nine seasons. He came on as a writer and then eventually took on more responsibilities as an executive producer for four seasons. He was asked about about the status of X-Files 3, specifically if a script was in place. "No. No I don’t. I mean I’ve known for many years what I would like the movie to be and I’ve been talking to Chris Carter about it for many years, but there is no script," he said. Adding that plot is, "the climax of the alien colonization story that began the series."

If a third movie happens or if it doesn't Fox still has brand name value with The X-Files, and Spotnitz could see Fox rebooting the television series in the future like Star Trek did. "I wouldn’t be surprised at all," Spotnitz explained. "I mean, I don’t think I would have anything to do with it but you know, for better or for worse, these things are titles of big corporations , like Star Trek belongs to Paramount and The X-Files belongs to Twentieth Century Fox and it’s a huge asset in their libraries so I can’t imagine they would let it sit languishing forever. Anything could happen. I just hope that if they do it, they do it well, that’s my only request."

By the way most of you may have missed the final scene from The X files I Want Believe, as it was shown after the credits. It reveals that Mulder and Scully have headed to warmer waters to finally get away from the politics and the ghouls. This might be the last we see of the two characters, so soak it up.

No just no

never saw that last clip! They can just use new agents. But it needs the feel of the old show. Have Chris Carter be a part of it. Millennium, now that show was good!
jimpinto24 - 12/1/2012, 8:47 PM
I hope Fox does work on a script for The X-Files 3.
themcdougalbugle - 12/1/2012, 8:50 PM
Disney should just own everything cause they don't slack around.
xeno - 12/1/2012, 8:58 PM
That last scene was better than anything in the rest of the movie. It's too bad I never knew it existed because it might have made me hate that movie a little bit less.
CoLest - 12/1/2012, 9:02 PM
Awesome show. It deserves more respect than a reboot. Spinoff series?
Funsize - 12/1/2012, 9:21 PM
I'm sick of the word "reboot".
mgeoff88 - 12/1/2012, 9:52 PM
Are you kidding me!? The want to reboot the show? The show isn't even that old yet!!!

@WesleyGibson I think pretty much everyone lost interest when David Duchovny left the show. I actually still watched it, but I thought about giving up on the show numerous times.

Bring back the Great Mutato. Make him a fellow FBI agent

man...a reboot of this show would cause riots. millenium may have been good and all, but it didn't work. that's the only thing that would worry me about a spin-off.

maybe if brian fuller helmed it? then again, that might be too stylized for the grittiness that made for the best episodes.

i dunno on this one really. id be all for a 3rd film. i loved the 'one-off-ness' of the 2nd one, but am aware im probly in the minority.

I thought the ending to the secod movie rpped up things very nicely, but I wouldn't mind seeing a third one. Especially if it goes all big conspiracy like the first movie. I just don't want to see something like the X-files game that came out a few years ago, the Resist or Serve one. It was fun to play, but they were trying to get every single little storyline connected, and it felt like it didn't hold true to the show. Now the first game was awesome! If they made a storyline like that into a movie I would be stoked! It pretty much played like a movie anyway. That was a good game.

*that first sentence is "I thought the ending to the second movie wrapped up things very nicely..." my keypad has problems.

Watched season 1 and 2 recently and it's still fresh,no need for a reboot at all...Just give us a new season with Fox and Scully.

Ok this rebooting thing is going too far.

It should be against a law. Or there should be clear rules what you can remake/reboot.

i hate talentless, hack executives rebooting everything they don't know what to do with.

yeah, x-files doesn't have the pull anymore to gross big at the box office. it's because you [frick]ers waited around too long when most people have moved on from it.

but it also isn't the x-files that people fell in love with in the first place if you walk around recasting everyone, and restarting everything.

just wrap it up in a tv movie/mini-series.

this isn't [frick]ing rocket science.
ComicFan523 - 12/2/2012, 8:29 AM
I was a big fan of The X Files when it was on TV and thought the second movie was OK, I think a lot of fans were disappointed that it didn't continue the alien invasion storyline . To me the story seemed like something more suited to an episode in season one of Millennium, not The X Files. Like blackster said, if they can't get the funds together to do a theatrical release, just do a TV movie or miniseries. I'd even settle for a direct to DVD movie. It'd be nice to see a new X Files TV show but I don't think that would work either, remember how they tried to reboot the series in season nine with Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish?
SamWinchester - 12/2/2012, 9:14 AM
I hope they make one final film to wrap things up.
DrainBamage - 12/2/2012, 9:16 AM
So long as they bring back Jesse and Alex!

Your scientists have yet to discover how neural networks create self-consciousness, let alone how the human brain processes two-dimensional retinal images into the three-dimensional phenomenon known as perception. Yet you somehow brazenly declare that seeing is believing!
YoungThanos - 12/2/2012, 9:18 AM
FOX has ruined X-men, X-files and next will be X-mas.

They feel that the birth of Christ needs a reboot...
riseofloganX36 - 12/2/2012, 10:17 AM
no Mulder no Scully = FAIL!!!!!!

But if they make a 3rd movie and have a story with ailens it could be good, not that i dident like the second movie cause i loved seeing them back and im a big x-files fan, the movie would be good. But they have to hurry befor they bolth get older.

KNIGHT3000 - 12/2/2012, 12:42 PM
I love that picture of Scully licking Mulder. In high School she was like my dream girl next to Lois Lane...sigh
croniccris - 12/2/2012, 2:40 PM
they already remade the show its called fringe now
Pooh - 12/2/2012, 3:44 PM
The series tanked after the first movie came out. Nuff said.
dancingmonkey08 - 12/2/2012, 3:55 PM
aw thats a pity. I only watched a few episodes of it but it was a great show. And it would have been great to get a conclusion to the overall story arc. They really should have had a movie ready for this year because the alien colonization starts in about 19 days, if Im not mistaken lol

They should have made a movie this year, even if it was a straight to dvd one like the two Stargate ones

If they do potentially reboot it years from now, they should not reboot it totally. Just do the next generation, two new agents take over the X-Files and start a brand new story arc. No need to utterly reboot it, just do a loose continuation
Optimus83 - 12/2/2012, 6:14 PM
I want X Files 3. ...with alien invation
HellScorpion - 12/3/2012, 11:44 AM
I really envy Duchovny in that picture...

New rumor on fansite:
*Fox is doing a reboot of XF tv.
*NO Duchovny or Anderson or Carter.
*Carter wants nothing to do with it.
*Hope was Rothman out would mean new XF movie but no change.
*The top people want a reboot with concentrate on relationship of new characters (romance) not scifi and para-normal.
*Carter / 10-13 prod team up with Wing Nut Films to make XF "spoof".
*This has been writed, may be by Fran Walsh(?)
*Leak of script on internet read by some fans who say is GREAT!
*It is not silly spoof but has great scary dark story with action but is very hilarious.
It is writed as not XF but is plainly XF just different names.
*CSM (aka Cancer man) is hope to be Ian McKellen. (He is discussing)
*BEST NEWS - Duchovny and Anderson to star and Carter direct!

These news come from a Canada journolist with source at Fox and Weta (?) and some fans at IMDb who have early copy of script. No I have not seen that.
