Roland Emmerich Reveals New Details For INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequels; Will Smith Not Committed

Director Roland Emmerich offers plenty of new info for the planned two-part sequel to Independence Day, saying that they take place 20 years after the first film and that it'll focus on a new generation including Will Smith's character's stepson.

A sequel to 1996's blockbuster sci-fi film Independence Day has been in development for years, with the possibility of two to form a trilogy. Last year, it was revealed that there will be a two-part follow-up to the original film, with the working titles ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part 2 being planned. Now, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Roland Emmerich confirms that he is is developing the two sequels, which were written by him and Dean Devlin. White House Down and The Amazing Spider-Man scribe James Vanderbilt is rewriting. The movies will take place 20 years after the first film, " when a distress call sent by the first wave of aliens finally brings reinforcements to Earth." "The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back," says Emmerich. "And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years." He also says that the world of ID Forever will be changed, and he is working with an art department staff to shape its look. It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane."

One question on everyone's mind is, will we see Will Smith return? While some familiar faces will return (including Bill Pullman), Smith hasn't committed to the sequels. The storylines will focus on a new generation of human heroes, which include Steven Hiller's (Smith) stepson, who was played by Ross Bagley in the first Independence Day. "It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over," says Emmerich. Part 1 sequel will feature a cliffhanger ending, in order to have audiences return. "The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens]." Finally, Emmerich says that the aliens will "do different things", and "we've rebuilt" when asked what's left for aliens to destroy. Are you excited about a two-part Independence Day sequel?

2 more sequels? - the king of disaster-porn run out of ideas already post-2012?.

And "hell no!" to anything presuming it needs 90s action star 'Will Smith (& son) Ltd' in it.
FrankieDedo - 3/26/2013, 2:24 PM
i like Emmerich's movies, even if not absolutely thoughtful they are made with fantasy and with more heart than all the transformers movies togheter.

Oh and Stargate was awesome
TheRationalOne - 3/26/2013, 2:28 PM
Independence Day is a fantastic movie and I've always wanted a sequel. I'm all for it.
Tony93 - 3/26/2013, 2:29 PM
they need will smith.. everyone who remembers that movie remembers specifically will smith.. it'll bring in much more of an audience
SomTingWong - 3/26/2013, 2:31 PM
ID forever?
SimyJo - 3/26/2013, 2:32 PM
@Tony93 - It was the Nineties! - THE NINETIES!.
Will Smith isn't cool anymore (and sorry big willy but neither is your son you're grooming as your replacement).
Niklander - 3/26/2013, 2:35 PM

OptimusPrimeTime - 3/26/2013, 2:49 PM
@@LEVITIKUZ- I see what you did there...hahaha

I'm all for a sequel or sequels. With or without Smith.

Three things.

1- the script and story better be knockout awesome and MAKE SENSE-no plotholes
2- if Smith doesn't return, they better a BAMF to replace him as the hero.
3- if Smith does return, I DON'T WANT TO SEE HIS DUMBASS SON!!!
InfiniteMonkey - 3/26/2013, 2:49 PM
[frick] Will Smith!
He's boring and played out.
Put another brown skinned person on there and make sure he doesn't demand "to have to kill the bad guy."
Bigred20 - 3/26/2013, 2:52 PM
ID won the oscar for visual fx and that was back then
can you imagine how awesome they would be now with modern tech?
fvck will smith hes a disgrace
hes a talented actor no doubt but hes ruining his reputaion paying off directors to let his talentless son be cast
same thing with his daughter
"i whip my hair all around" really?
WakeOfMagellen - 3/26/2013, 2:54 PM
As much as I have always loved the original....
2 words come to mind when I read this; MONEY GRAB :-/

money grab

WakeOfMagellen - 3/26/2013, 2:56 PM
@ Optimus; "3- if Smith does return, I DON'T WANT TO SEE HIS DUMBASS SON!!!""

MUCHO agreed :-p
HipsterAngelusNY - 3/26/2013, 2:58 PM
I honestly like the idea, the 1st one they destroyed the main ship but not the alien planet it would be cool if the aliens came back
TF2Weeboo - 3/26/2013, 3:00 PM
Welcome to Earf!
HipsterAngelusNY - 3/26/2013, 3:00 PM
there are a lot of cool storylines they could use but if will doesnt come back or if he demanss $50 million then they could go with someone else, dont use 1/4 of the budget on just him
ForeverPowerful - 3/26/2013, 3:01 PM
Ive wanted a ID sequel, but I agree with everyone else in the world that I'm tired of seeing his kid.
Ocelot - 3/26/2013, 3:01 PM
jayden will probably be the star of this movie
WakeOfMagellen - 3/26/2013, 3:03 PM
Three words come to mind when I hear the name "Jayden Smith"...... RIDING COAT TAILS :-p
localman22 - 3/26/2013, 3:04 PM
Will Adam Baldwin be back? He could play one of the Generals. After Firefly and Chuck, he is probably recognizable enough to turn his smallish role into a major role.
Facade - 3/26/2013, 3:06 PM
One of my all time LEAST favorite movies of all time! Pure shit!
RGINLA - 3/26/2013, 3:08 PM
@Scorpion8125 IMHO, a sequel 20 years later is a great idea. Using all the crashed and blown up alien tech that the squids left behind, a united Earth waiting for another invasion? It would be like when the Borg attacked Sector 001. Bases on the moon, Mars, and space stations, with new tech as an early warning system... and crazy ass Professor Jeff Goldblum with time and money to build shit.
Ocelot - 3/26/2013, 3:08 PM
@Netman0007 they would have to rename the movie to either "independance day 2 starring will smith" or "Will Smith's Independance day 2" to get him on board
BboiBlack - 3/26/2013, 3:15 PM
will smith will only return if he can star.
MrChuff - 3/26/2013, 3:21 PM
"Are you excited about a two-part Independence Day sequel?"

no, I'm not.
MrChuff - 3/26/2013, 3:23 PM
@WakeOfMagellen - I'll go one better.

ONE word comes to mind when I hear the name Jayden Smith - Nepotism.
TheSuperguy - 3/26/2013, 3:26 PM
Would be cool to see Smith return in the 3rd one...
supermarioworldE - 3/26/2013, 3:27 PM
Really? Will Smith was the only good thing about that cheesy pos. It's criminal to drop him.
DZ123 - 3/26/2013, 3:32 PM
Too bad Macross already did it, Roland.
RichardHedski - 3/26/2013, 3:40 PM
YES! If anybody can give us epic disaster movies, it's Roland Emmerich. Besides ID I also loved Day After Tomorrow and 2012 was enjoyable. I even liked his Godzilla movie which I feel is horribly underrated.
BANE5000 - 3/26/2013, 3:49 PM
Kind of glad Will Smith isnt commited to the film, I think it wouldve been a horrible idea to have his character now be the president, as the filmakers have mentioned before in interviews...

All I ask, for the sake of all thats good...DO NOT MAKE JADEN SMITH PLAY HIS STEP SON..., his kids annoy me for some reason and theres other good young actors that could play the role, Jaden doesnt need to play his kid in ever single film that calls for it.
Darkhaven - 3/26/2013, 4:23 PM
It makes sense for there to be a sequel, and Sci-fi fans will love the particulars for those sequels:

-a legitimate twenty year gap gives time for rebuilding.

-some common sense in tactics. It's ridiculous to think an ENTIRE SPECIES will travel space! What country do we know of, on our own planet, takes EVERY one of their people to war? Freaking ants don't even do that. So, why would an entire planet do it? There are civilians and backup back home. Durr.

-Even if alien backup wasn't on its way, humanity would make its way out to THEM. We reverse engineer all kinds of stuff in real you REALLY think we wouldn't try to do the same with alien gear? Hell, they were trying to do it in the first movie!

-Remember that part when Bill Pullman saw in the aliens mind that the aliens went planet to planet ganking civilizations? THERE ARE OTHER ALIENS. Thus, the enemy of my enemy and all that. Humans would do what it could to prevent future assaults.

All I'm saying is, sequels in this case are valid; they don't even require a stretch in imagination. Cash may obviously be a factor, but Independence Day hasn't been big news for over a decade or more...a simple cash grab could have been made one year after its release.
OnePunchBaldy - 3/26/2013, 4:38 PM
Will Smith needs this movie to redeem himself. One of my favorite actors, it just wouldn't be the same. He really [frick]ed his career by passing up Django, but he needs a movie like this... without Jaden or Willow.
NeoBaggins - 3/26/2013, 4:49 PM
Those ships were huge. The ones they brought down in the film would be filled with uninjured and armed aliens. They really don't need an alien backup plot. The world is already a battle field.
wiseme_2005 - 3/26/2013, 6:06 PM
OK everyone, wouldn't a great big budget movie about Bigfoot set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest be way better than this crap???
SeaSerpentine - 3/26/2013, 6:10 PM
I'd love to see a 2-part sequel, with or without Smith, but I do hope Goldblum comes back.

It would be neat to see the aliens' homeplanet, but that would probably make them less mysterious, and thus, less interesting.
WakeOfMagellen - 3/26/2013, 6:53 PM
What Neo said makes a LOT of sense.....
there would HAVE to be a lot of "soldier aliens" and such still roamin' the old countryside for a long time ;-) LOL
NoJobBOB - 3/26/2013, 7:22 PM
Hmmmmm...I can't really get into this idea unless The Fresh Prince returns. I'd probably see this regardless though. I loved the first one. Not the best film but it was fun.
