Sigourney Weaver To Return As A Fresh Character In AVATAR Sequel

Although Grace Augustine died in the first movie, James Cameron confirmed that Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Paul) will return for the second installment in his Avatar franchise as a completely new character. Hit the jump for more...

While James Cameron's Avatar sequel has gotten off to a slow start, it is still coming together, as Cameron not only has plans for a second film, but for a THIRD and FOURTH as well. Not much has been revealed about the sequel yet, save for some minor updates from the director on castings and script updates and such. However, During a recent interview with the guys over THR, Cameron stated that longtime friend Sigourney Weaver will return for the second film as an entirely new character. Check out the quote from the director below.

Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We're good friends who've always worked well together,so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she's playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

Calculon - 6/9/2014, 10:21 PM
If this is anything like Avatar, it will blow my mind the first time, and then each subsequent viewing will double my hatred of it.
GenerationX - 6/9/2014, 10:22 PM
huh??? How does that work? And @mmadadamm no they weren't. The big secret reveal was a Batman exhibit at WB, NOT Wonder Woman as so many assumed
huckfinnisher - 6/9/2014, 10:22 PM
By Odin's crumb encrusted beard! What madness!
MrGlass - 6/9/2014, 10:23 PM
@Mmadadamm no wonder woman pics
just a new Batman exhibit
Phronesis - 6/9/2014, 10:24 PM
The first movie is pure garbage but I must admit I liked Weavers role.

Let him do what ever he wants.
and go hate on Michael Bay
Ranger14 - 6/9/2014, 10:30 PM
That makes no sense whatsoever, unless she is cast as a voice-over character.

Considering how long it takes Cameron to put these films together, the fourth one may be out prior to 2050. :-p
KevMerica - 6/9/2014, 10:31 PM
Glad they aren't bringing her character from Avatar 1 back from the dead.

I found it hilarious that the 2 films you mentioned in parenthesis are Alien and Paul
Humperdink - 6/9/2014, 10:32 PM
batz11 - 6/9/2014, 10:33 PM will she be a clone in this one too, [frick] me...
MrGlass - 6/9/2014, 10:34 PM
Bet you 10 bucks shes a tree god now
RobtimusPrime - 6/9/2014, 10:36 PM
Sigourney Weaver, returning to, Avatar?

THAT'S...... MEH.

Most overrated/overhyped movie of the last 20 years.
KevMerica - 6/9/2014, 10:42 PM
Or could you say that Jim Cameron is "blowing" the movie himself? Hell of a mental image....
Alien - 6/9/2014, 10:47 PM
Imma just gonna leave this here...

StrangerX - 6/9/2014, 10:50 PM
@NickNaylor- u might be right. They might make the tree godess sound like Grace to make a better connection w Jake
Scorpion8125 - 6/9/2014, 10:51 PM
Avatard was such pretty crap.

Vaportrail - 6/9/2014, 10:54 PM
@NickNaylor That's immediately what I thought too. Spirit of Pandora or w/e.

It's not like she can just jump in and play another human. Even playing a new Na'vi character would be a stretch.
pesmerga44 - 6/9/2014, 10:54 PM
I am just gonna leave this here because I bet this is what is going to kind of happen here.

theartofoneness - 6/9/2014, 10:57 PM
My guess is she will be another twin, like the guy in the first one, or she will be 100% navi or underwater navi peopre. Could even be from a nearby planet.
AsgardianHobo - 6/9/2014, 11:00 PM
If it wasn't for the 3D draw, this movie franchise would be nowhere it is now.

JoJo1982 - 6/9/2014, 11:00 PM

She literally has NO ass in that movie lol
Starfox - 6/9/2014, 11:02 PM
I never saw the first Avatar... Is that bad? I need to get on that soon before the Sequel comes out.
TMcFarlaneFan - 6/9/2014, 11:05 PM
Avatar should be merged with the DCCU. And Arrow should be in Avatar too!
Lozzy - 6/9/2014, 11:05 PM
Shit movie! Please don't turn it into a franchise.
Alien - 6/9/2014, 11:06 PM

Lol, man. Shes got a little bit of ass. Anyway, she looked fine as hell in Galaxy Quest. Aint no denyin that

Scorpion8125 - 6/9/2014, 11:12 PM
She will either be a clone of do the Obi-Wan dead guy thing.

Either way, who cares?

Crap is as crap does....

Don't step in the Avaturd.

pesmerga44 - 6/9/2014, 11:16 PM

I will agree with that she did look great in Galaxy Quest.
TheBrotherhood - 6/9/2014, 11:18 PM
I won't forget that sigourney-cleavage in galaxy quest. She became a LEGIT milf in that film. :)
Alien - 6/9/2014, 11:19 PM
Right on, yo.
sKeemAn - 6/9/2014, 11:27 PM
And how is that supposed to work? Clone or twin? I bet this sequel will be a reiteration of another story like the first Avatar.
RobtimusPrime - 6/9/2014, 11:44 PM
Human military: BAD. Main character is a treasonous horny deserter.

Giant, Alien, Indian, Smurfs with cat tails & ears? GOOD. & sexy? GTFO!!

F*ck this worthless propaganda piece! Trees are wonderful! sigh.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/10/2014, 12:08 AM
Avatar wasn't that bad. Just after multiple viewings it is apparently a Fern Gully film in live action that was average. Special Effects still hold up very well and into the future like The Abyss, Aliens, and Terminator 2. James Cameron is a movie concept genius as Michael Bay is an action genius.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/10/2014, 12:11 AM
Also this:

"The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist."

Damn 14 years and a movie is made by Cameron. 8 years for Edgar Wright and can't take the heat.

Speaking of Heat. Let's go Miami Heat! 3peat_Heat. ;)
Snotzo - 6/10/2014, 12:12 AM
Is there that much story to tell that it warrants 4 movies?
Brainiac13 - 6/10/2014, 12:22 AM
She doesn't have to be a clone........she can be an Alien. ;)
l0rdleg0las - 6/10/2014, 12:24 AM
Who gives a shit about these shitty movies? Absolutely horrible original movie. I wonder what movies Cameron is going to rip off to make the sequels?
