VIDEO: Red Letter Media Review GODZILLA (2014)...& GODZILLA (1998)

The boys give their take on Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot. Mike kinda likes it, Jay pretty much feels the same way I did about it (review HERE). Also, just for kicks they revisit the '98 Roland Emmerich travesty.

An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Gareth Edwards directs Godzilla, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Cosmopolis), and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck., The Bourne Legacy) and Bryan Cranston (Argo, TV's Breaking Bad).

Both are bad imo, 2014 a little less so
nibs - 5/23/2014, 6:54 AM
I think the 98 one was better, to be honest. They're both bad though.
SpiderFraud - 5/23/2014, 7:02 AM
98' Godzilla better than this one....

gulducati - 5/23/2014, 7:18 AM
Who cares what Red Letter Media thinks about anything?
SuperCat - 5/23/2014, 7:19 AM
No way chicken-legged Godzilla is better than this one.

YogaHoser - 5/23/2014, 7:23 AM
America should just stop making Godzilla immediately. They're rubbish.
UltimateCookie - 5/23/2014, 7:33 AM
Stop. 2014 Godzilla is being aggressively compared to Pacific Rim which is why alot of people don't see the awesomeness. 2014 Godzilla brought life back into the American Godzilla franchise. The movie was great. Get over it.
MisterHolmes - 5/23/2014, 7:47 AM
the movie brought back Godzilla, that was the purpose.98 is an all around shit film, stop saying you like it to gain attention, you know its garbage
druzod2501 - 5/23/2014, 7:50 AM
@nibs ambulances are on the way dude. Just hold on!

Godzilla The (cartoon) Series was actually better than Godzilla the movie, I must say though
Omega - 5/23/2014, 7:57 AM
@CookieKid247 Yeah.
Godzilla 2014 was better that this Zilla thing from 98.
New Godzilla is more true to the classic jap Godzilla.Even the ending was like in classic godzilla movies. And we had monsters battle and atomic breath, just awesome.Godzilla was such a bad-ass in that movie, great moments with great music.I hope we see more of this in sequel.Human plot was meh like just in every monster movie,so i don't cry like others, even in jap movies human stories was meh or "funny".

matthuliz - 5/23/2014, 8:03 AM

"Its too dark... the MOTU had more screen time... Cranston had the best scenes... Aaron & Elizabeth has no depth..."

Its the best Godzilla film so far! Deal with it!
RorMachine - 5/23/2014, 8:11 AM
...Ok, except..everything you wrote in italics is true?

gulducati - their legions of fans I'd imagine.
Gamera623 - 5/23/2014, 8:19 AM
Yeah both American Godzilla movies were pretty bad....but the 2014 is definitly an improvement.
Gamera623 - 5/23/2014, 8:21 AM
"Its the best Godzilla film so far! Deal with it!"

Out of the 2 American films right? Then yeah I agree.
Are you counting all the japansese ones as well and still think G-2014 is the best? Because thats pure insanity.
nibs - 5/23/2014, 8:25 AM
LOL I'm not saying I liked either of them, but 2014 Zilla was jam-packed with clichés, a TON of stretches in logic and had a plot that was predictable as hell. Not to mention how much I hate movies that are funded by and used as recruitment propaganda for the military.

It's been a while since I saw the 98 one for sure, and it was definitely not good, but I do remember the ending where they find the nest of baby godzillas in the stadium being somewhat unexpected.

They're really, probably about on the same level. I gave 2014 3/10 and 1998 4/10, although that score is +/- 1, so they are prob fairly equal.
LordBritish - 5/23/2014, 8:25 AM
The stupidity gets worse as The Internet matures. The drivel posted that people get away with is unparalleled from 15 years ago. The history prior to 15 years ago is non-existent to these cretins.

To be completely clear, opinion aside: Godzilla has ALWAYS been the cavalry. There has always been cheezy human dialogue prior to Godzilla's appearance in every single film. ALWAYS. To defend Godzilla (1998) is akin to defending Ang Lee's Hulk. Or worse, defending Super Mario Bros (1993).

These two films are examples of turning childhood heroes into deceitful money making schemes. Nothing more.

Indeed. Get your head out of your collective arses and accept that this Godzilla pays proper respects to its respective universe.
nibs - 5/23/2014, 8:27 AM
^ IMO, of course.
If you like special effects over plot, then 2014 for sure. And I do remember a love story in the Broderick one being really dumb (but then again, so were Cranston and Olson's characters).
nibs - 5/23/2014, 8:28 AM

because 2014 zilla has nothing to do with just making money and is all about the art form? LOL.
15 years from now go back and watch both, you'll realize there is little difference.
Brainiac13 - 5/23/2014, 8:34 AM
This guys are dicks!!!
LordBritish - 5/23/2014, 8:39 AM

No need to watch the 1998 film. One tiny detail that completely makes that film not watchable as a Godzilla film: the titular character is NOT Godzilla. Just because a CEO slapped Godzilla on that film does not make it a Godzilla film. That is why I made the SMB movie comparison.
lolken - 5/23/2014, 8:40 AM
@nibs your comments are bad.. and you should feel bad.

Godzilla 2014 was great. It could have been a little better but it is LOADS better than the 1998 one ... which I bought for the kids ($5) and watched.. it is complete trash.
nibs - 5/23/2014, 8:42 AM
Sorry, you lost me. How is it not Godzilla?
nibs - 5/23/2014, 8:45 AM
Sorry @lolken, the movie just came out 2 weeks ago. Knowing this website, I should have waited 6 months until emotions have calmed and people stop buying into the hype, then when everyone watches it a second time they'll be on the same page as me.
RorMachine - 5/23/2014, 8:46 AM
I loved Ang Lee's Hulk:)
Ancar - 5/23/2014, 8:58 AM
Roland Emmerich's Godzilla was much better - although those chicken legs:)
nibs - 5/23/2014, 9:02 AM
Hahaha I didn't think Ang Lee's Hulk was all that bad either
monsterswin - 5/23/2014, 9:17 AM
The best Godzilla film so far? You mean as far as US versions go? Hell yes. As far as ALL if them go? No way.
monsterswin - 5/23/2014, 9:20 AM
Word has gotten around (from people I have talked to in Brooklyn) that Godzilla 2014 isn't so great. MANY of the younger crowd here aren't recommending it because Godzilla is hardly in it compared to the 2 hour plus length of the film. The customary 2nd week drop in box office is already strongly in effect and X Men opening today will finish it off. G 2014 is "OK" but kind of the Star Trek: TMP. Hoping the sequel brings it because they have shown that they have the potential to do it.
DylansMyDog - 5/23/2014, 9:39 AM
I agree with most of their complaints, but I still enjoyed the new Godzilla. I haven't seen the old one since it came out and really don't remember much about it.
BackwardGalaxy - 5/23/2014, 9:43 AM
These guys are totally missing the parallels between Godzilla's fight and the human storyline, but they aren't wrong about the characters in general. The best character in the film is Cranston's character and the movie immediately suffers as soon as he's gone.
BackwardGalaxy - 5/23/2014, 10:02 AM
It's also hilarious that they say Emmerich wants to be like Spielberg after reviewing the 2014 Godzilla where Edwards has so many callbacks to Spielberg movies, it's practically an "Ode to the Berg".
riseofloganX36 - 5/23/2014, 10:23 AM
No one has never seen a GODZILLA movie before in there GOD DAM! life!!!!!!! It's a GOSZILLA movie stop looking for deep meaningful story and plot it's about giant monsters who cares about story and plot!!!!

And if you all see a GODZILLA movie even from ToHo the stores plot and carecters are done bad. Watch GODZILLA vs Smog monster theres a part were a guy is in a dance club and starts seeing people with fish heads.

Come on to clashay?!?! I swear people have to stop watching movies with sticks up there asses and enjoy the movie you people act like you know what your talking about but if your bourn at the end of 90s and 2000 you know SHIT!

And then CGI and Guy in a suit, well the last GODZILLA movie was final wars and ToHo is ganna make a CGI GODZILLA that looks just like the guy in the suit.

I swear you people whatch a GODZILLA movie It's not about the people and story.

I went to go see GODZILLA not Malcom in the middle's dad.

Don't be a LEMON be a ROSE BUD!
IIIAdamantiumIII - 5/23/2014, 10:23 AM
pretty much how all godzilla movies play out

1) People doing stuff creating some form of character development for the main cast.
2) something bad happens *aka Random Monster attacks*
3)people reacting to the random event
4) Godzilla shows up...
5)a fight breaks out and a city is destroyed
6)the end

Godzilla 2014 was awesome it pretty much covered all the bases for a Godzilla film , I actually love the fact he has very little screen time. It made his presence so much more powerful and had more of an impact. And how freaking badass was his finishing move on the last Kaiju
If they decide to do a second I have a feeling it will dip into a more "pacific rim" type of world *cats outa the bag* type deal* more monsters more action

Godzilla 1998...the film was terrible but I still love it. the cartoon was actually pretty decent
willyburz - 5/23/2014, 10:47 AM
98 was the first movie I walked out of. 2014 Zilla I didnt, but thats not saying much. The newest one goes to shit when Cranstons arc is over in 30 minutes, then people and a story you dont give a shit about eats up the next hour and fifteen...followed by Godzilla wrestling mutos, and cut aways from the actio to see peole watch the fight on tv, and the military do dumb shit to make the movie, there was no fuking point to the halo jump part of the movie. They had to go that high for what fing purpose?!?! No purpose but to make something look neato. Ugh, soo dissapointed in this movie.
willyburz - 5/23/2014, 10:50 AM
Ohhhh and just because you kill something doesnt let the lights turn back on after an emp blast. W TO THE T TO THE F?!?!?! AND WTF are we transporting a nuke via train?! Is this the 40's?
KBZ - 5/23/2014, 11:36 AM
God I hate the blind "deal with it!" kind of people.
Equivocal - 5/23/2014, 11:38 AM
does anybody know if 'red letter media' are contributors to this site ??
it seems like here, they like those guys a lot,
even tho they are not funny or 100% accurate,
their videos keep appearing all over the place like IF their comments/opinions matter at all.

unless the CBM owners think that whatever RedLetterMedia say is a fact...

but truth is:

KBZ - 5/23/2014, 11:39 AM
I call bullshit. The only movie in the last 30 years worth actually walking out of was batman and Robin. Godzilla 98 was at least entertaining
HanBurgundy - 5/23/2014, 12:01 PM
@willyburz - I completely agree with you. I've been saying the same things since I saw it. Nice to see other people who aren't in blatant denial.

SOOOOO many stupid loop-holes and boring, two-dimensional characters. One of the worst written stories I've seen in years. I guess that's what you get when you hire the writer of Doom.
PunkRockJesus - 5/23/2014, 12:40 PM
@ Willyburz maybe if you actually watched the film instead of bitching right out of the gate, you would have understood it. The reason they had to jump was the MUTO's could create EMP blasts that took out anything technological. Hence the jump from above, the use of a non-electrical train. Godzilla is a force of nature, who's purpose is to keep our world at balance. The MUTO's mess with that balance, hence Godzilla's need to remove them. It's not that hard to follow, although I do bet it's a little hard to sit through with that giant stick up your ass...
