Benedict Cumberbatch Studied Terrorism And History For STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Villain Role

Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) talks more about his villainous turn as John Harrison in the highly anticipated sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, revealing that he has studied history to prepare for the "terrorist" role.

Speaking with MTV, actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) talks more about his role in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, in which he plays the villainous John Harrison. He previously called his character a terrorist, and from what we've seen so far, the character looks to be a very serious threat. Here, Cumberbatch discusses his influences for the role, saying that he looked into real life history and terrorism. "[Look at] real social history and present history, everything that's going on: uprisings, people who are trying to spread democracy or fight their cause, not necessarily through political means ... he is a terrorist, and sadly, that's part of the fabric of our modern world. You don't need to look far to research that one." He said that he looked towards certain terrorist groups in the past" and how they operated. However, he still tried to keep his character grounded in the Star Trek universe despite the real-life influences. "It was important to me to ground him in a reality that's based more on his story than, say, a parallel in the real world. What should certainly be chilling are the parallels to the modern world."

Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve and Anton Yelchin. The film is set to hit theaters May 17th, and it was recently announced that it will debut in IMAX 3D two days prior.

After re-watching Star Trek: Generations yesterday, I have a feeling that "John Harrison" might actually be this universe's version of Malcolm McDowell's Dr. Tolian Soran.

Long coat/black tight outfit combo? Check. Both also have Klingons somewhere in their life. (Well, from what we've seen of John Harrison from the trailer, anyway.) Harrison's talk about "healing people," his family, and pretty much all of his vague background, may all be related to the Nexus. (And, the line, "For I have returned.") Both are pretty good at displaying their physical strengths, too...well, among many other things! I just see that there are a lot of Soran's elements that can be made analogous to Harrison's. I'm purely speculating here, for sure, but I'm firm that I'd like to see this rather than Khan, or Gary Mitchell.

@Tempo -
The 'focus' had been lost long before this film. Most Trek movies dealt with a villain or villains and not with the galaxy or space. Wham/Bam! Whiz/Bang! For the big screen and big bucks.

If he had become a terrorist I might've been impressed.
