BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Beams Up $22 Million On First Friday Of Release

While it's performing a little better than 2009's Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness took less than expected at the North American box office yesterday. Iron Man 3 meanwhile managed to blast its way back to second place! Read on for details.

Star Trek Into Darkness opened for late evening and midnight screenings on Wednesday and after netting a combined total of $3.5 million for those, it went on to take $11.4 million on Thursday (its first full day of release). Yesterday however, the J.J. Abrams helmed sequel beamed up an additional $22 million, quite a bit lower than the predicted $25 - 27 million. Its current domestic cume now stands at $35.5 million, so whether or not it will manage to reach $100 million by tomorrow evening really does now depend on how well it fares today. 2009's Star Trek had a three day opening of $79 million, whereas this follow-up is expected to take only between $80 - 89 million for the same period. Oh, and for those of you looking for yet another Iron Man 3 update, the Marvel Studios threequel managed to hold off competition from The Great Gatsby to nab second place with $9.9 million. In the UK, Fast & Furious 6 opened with $4.6 million, the second highest opening of the year behind - you guessed it - Iron Man 3.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk
Zachary Quinto as Spock
Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison
Alice Eve as Dr. Carol Marcus
Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura
Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov
John Cho as Hikaru Sulu
Simon Pegg as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
Bruce Greenwood as Admiral Christopher Pike

PazuzuMan - 5/18/2013, 7:50 AM
It didn't take much to be better than iron man 3.
iPaul - 5/18/2013, 7:53 AM
Great movie.
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 7:53 AM

DaenerysTargaryen - 5/18/2013, 8:00 AM
I loved Star Trek Into Darkness :D
Screwger - 5/18/2013, 8:02 AM
What a shame! I liked IRon Man 3 but this movie is far superior and the villain is better(no pun intended)!
BboiBlack - 5/18/2013, 8:03 AM
Is marvel going to dodge yet another bullet and have a may full of under performers?
kevberg - 5/18/2013, 8:06 AM
not hear good things as far as word of mouth on this TREK installment.

good to hear IM3 beat Gatsby...Dicraprio alone should tank that movie.
ATrueHero1987 - 5/18/2013, 8:07 AM
@IM53 A good part of my summer will be spent at the movies. Especially in July.
danetooeasy - 5/18/2013, 8:17 AM
Fantastic film.
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 8:23 AM
@JR call me a kid all you want, but if all you do is send me a one word reply, because you don't like my opinion, you might need to question your own maturity. Yes we know IM3 is riding the Avengers BUT 77 on RT, a 7.8 on IMDB, and an A Cinemascore is not something that The Matrix Reloaded received. Into darkness was good, sad to see it not meet expectations.
rocky - 5/18/2013, 8:23 AM
IM3 owning the haters. OK I'll give you that I respect the reason some of you hate it but the general audiences and even some hardcore fans like me have embraced it. They just keep coming back and is off to another good weekend despite losing the I-Max screens to Star Trek
Effusion - 5/18/2013, 8:24 AM
This movie is EPIC EPIC EPIC!!!
starkresilient - 5/18/2013, 8:25 AM
that's low
rocky - 5/18/2013, 8:25 AM
IM3 had an A cinema score like it was pointed out above. That's the people speaking folk.

Star Trek was great too. Saw it Thursday and Firday night. Blew past my expectations and JJ outdid himself. Huge step up over his first ST

Wow... Another somewhat disappointing day's gross for Star Trek. It seriously did not build at all on the success of the first one. Did they wait too long for the sequel?

What's funny to me is that these Abrams' Star Treks are exactly like "Iron Man 3" to Trekkies.... There's about 20-30% of them that can't handle the changes they make to the source material and scream about how horrible the films are, while the rest of the fandom and the general audiences give them "A" grades.

Of course, the Trek films actually *are* written by the guys who write the Transformers movies... So maybe their crying fans have a better point.
TheGreenBastard - 5/18/2013, 8:36 AM
Ah yes, an article about a movie that's out not, that's not Iron Man 3, and we have Marvel trolls trolling along. Sad really, must be lonely spending all this time trolling on this site.
TheGreenBastard - 5/18/2013, 8:47 AM
Not biased at all, I'm a fans of comics, and comic books movies, regardless of the company that makes the product. My favorite comics being written these days isn't even from the big 2, it's The Walking Dead from Image comics.
GodzillaKart - 5/18/2013, 8:53 AM
I'll check this out as a rental. Probably hit up IM3 in the theater once more.
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 8:57 AM
I really want Star Trek to succeed cause this guy is gonna direct my favorite series Star Wars. But with The Hangover and Fast 6 it has no chance past this week. And I am not a marvel asshole troll like Trudy, I am simply a Marvelite who likes it when my favorite movies succeed.
KaBlam5 - 5/18/2013, 8:59 AM
Much better than IM3 but not saying much...Abrahms has destroyed an iconic Sci fi character by pussyfying James T Kirk
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 8:59 AM
@DoubleD I'm sorry but Epic will bomb HARD. It definitely will not gross more Than Fast 6 or even the Hangover. Happy birthday IM53 Keep Gusto away from your Grandmother at the party. He's too old for her.
CaptainObvious - 5/18/2013, 9:00 AM
"Hard core Star Trek fans have grown old an died of old age."

Your comment doesn't deserve a response, but here it goes. This has to be the dumbest thing I've heard today. The entire Stark Trek franchise is not even 50 years old. There have been countless spin-off shows and movies in the last several decades. So what if the old fans do die? There will always be new fans who will discover Star Trek. On top of that, TNG came out in the 80's. People who watched that show as kids are probably in their 20's or 30's now.
StarkAnthony - 5/18/2013, 9:03 AM
Star Trek was awesome
KaBlam5 - 5/18/2013, 9:07 AM
I think Abrahms has decided Star Wars VII is just going to be a remake of New Hope with a time shift and all the characters are going to be whining bitches...its just easier for him to just use the same story...oh yeah lots of lens flairs because thats innovative..assssss
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 9:07 AM
DoubleD a very valid point, BUT the budget on this movie was ridiculous, with all the competition it might not gross enough, but I know that my younger siblings want to see it.
rocky - 5/18/2013, 9:09 AM
Agree with banesmash
Fast 6 will top the box office
Star Trek
Epic and IM3 will battle for 4th spot
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 9:10 AM
@KAblam5 he better not [frick] up Star Wars, Star Wars fans are worse than Trekies, head WILL roll, remember Phantom Menace? Yeah lets not do that.
Cass808 - 5/18/2013, 9:11 AM
Really was such a good film. Knew it wouldnt ever beat IM3, but did just slightly hope.
GodzillaKart - 5/18/2013, 9:14 AM
Abrams has made fun action fare. But in turning Star Trek into simply fun action, he kinda killed star trek.
rocky - 5/18/2013, 9:14 AM
I don't know why ST doesn't get more love. I do understand that their film history isn't full of megahits but JJ has made the universe more action packed

The movie was great but neither night, Thu and Fri, was the theater packed. Good crowd but definitely not IM3 crowd.
ATrueHero1987 - 5/18/2013, 9:14 AM
Why are people comparing Star Trek: Into Darkness to IM3...O_o
KaBlam5 - 5/18/2013, 9:15 AM
IPSoup...Star Wars fanboys better start weeping now..this guy has single handedly wrecked the genre with his arbitrary lens flairs alone!!!how can you ruin James T Kirk the character is teed up for a Director/writer to create something great...I give you pussy Kirk in out Star Wars Fans watch out
rocky - 5/18/2013, 9:17 AM

I'm a TOS fan more than anything else Star Trek and have seen all their films. I'm not sure I agree with you.
The Star Trek movie universe was dying already. I think JJ managed to inject new life into the franchise.

Now the franchise has been set on a new course and only time will tell how the new director will steer it
IronPatriotChowder - 5/18/2013, 9:17 AM
This makes no sense, I thought the anticipation was huge for this movie, my dad was so psyched, guess I was mistake. I really wanted a trilogy.
l0rdleg0las - 5/18/2013, 9:17 AM
STID was an awesome movie. Had me on the edge of the seat the whole time. And! Now I finally get why so many pimp this dude. And the movie showed that old Kirk, Spock and Bones banter and awesomeness. Movie of the year...until Man of Steel.
