BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Takes $27.2M On Saturday; IRON MAN 3 Now 9th Highest Grossing Movie Of All-Time

Star Trek Into Darkness did well on Saturday, but will finish the weekend with a lotless than expected and Iron Man 3 is now the 9th highest grossing movie of all-time. Read on for details.

Star Trek Into Darkness just hasn't performed as well as Paramount or anyone else was expecting at the North American box office. The J.J. Abrams helmed sequel is light years away from being considered a flop, but it won't end up coming anywhere near the predicted $80 million weekend and 4 1/2-day total of $100 million. Instead, an increase of 30% on Saturday means it took an additional $27.2 million after Friday's disappointing $22 million, while analysts now predict a Sunday gross of $21.2 million. That equals around a $70.5 million weekend and an $84.1 million domestic cume. Unfortunately, not even the higher priced 3D and IMAX tickets were enough for Star Trek Into Darkness to beat Star Trek's opening back in 2009. Internationally, it took $80.5 million overseas for a global total of $164.5 million. In slightly more positive news, Iron Man 3 was a solid #2 this weekend with $35.1 million. That takes its domestic cume to $337.1 million and the Marvel Studios threequel earned $736.2 million internationally (after scoring another $40.2 million this weekend). With a worldwide cume of $1.073B, Iron Man 3 is now the #9 highest grossing movie of all time.

I predicted that it will end up being number 5 since before I even made my account.
Ocelot - 5/19/2013, 8:55 AM
Star Trek is going to suffer next week in the US due to the juggernaught fast and furious 6 and The hangover coming out. Will be knocked down to 3 or 4.
ArthurNumeriano - 5/19/2013, 8:56 AM
Iron Man 3: meh.
Into Darkness: awesome!
Cass808 - 5/19/2013, 9:07 AM
This is a shame, i really felt Into Darkness was a much better film than IM3. Obviously just an opinion, i guess im in a minority.
HellBlayzer1981 - 5/19/2013, 9:09 AM
Into Darkness just picked the wrong time to come out.
DrDoom - 5/19/2013, 9:11 AM
Star Trek Into Darkness deserves a billion too.
starkresilient - 5/19/2013, 9:13 AM
so many butthurt im3 haters. they can tale a seat tbh. GET THAT MONEY!

star trek was a shit. I love how people try to find im3 plot holes but star trek's whole plot was a hole. the ending was so stupid. the villian was wasted. like why was he khan? he did nothing.

DJRock93 - 5/19/2013, 9:15 AM
Yeah into Darkness was fantastic its timing was just awful, this is a huge summer for movies, most likely second only to 2015
MisterBabadook - 5/19/2013, 9:16 AM
Which is a shame because Star Trek Into Darkness is LIGHTYEARS more entertaining than Ironman3.
MightyZeus - 5/19/2013, 9:17 AM
I was more entertained by Star Trek into Darkness than Iron Man 3.

At least Khan wasnt an actor called Trevor;p
ALegendaryPanda - 5/19/2013, 9:18 AM
This sucks :(

Well at least it won't flop.
DrDoom - 5/19/2013, 9:18 AM
I love Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Seejay - 5/19/2013, 9:19 AM

Star Trek: Into Awesomeness was a much better movie.

It deserves higher numbers.

IM3 was a real disappointment.
DaenerysTargaryen - 5/19/2013, 9:19 AM
Thats sad cause I loved Star Trek Into Darkness. It deserves more :(
ALegendaryPanda - 5/19/2013, 9:21 AM
Maybe if they had released it the first week of June it would've made more. Oh well..
JohnLamb - 5/19/2013, 9:21 AM
Go Levi! Star Trek deserves more. It was a great film! Everyone should go see it!
CaptainObvious - 5/19/2013, 9:23 AM
I really liked Star Trek Into Darkness and it deserves to do much better than this.

And here comes DoubleD to make me slam my head into a wall.
MightyZeus - 5/19/2013, 9:24 AM
Someone actually enjoy's Spider man 3? That's sad lol
JohnLamb - 5/19/2013, 9:24 AM
You wont be disappointed coming out of the theater. Hahaha!
ALegendaryPanda - 5/19/2013, 9:25 AM
General audiences aren't tired of Star trek it's just that Iron Man 3 just came out like 2 weeks ago so it's still making money
Chewtoy - 5/19/2013, 9:26 AM
Paramount can probably thank Abrams' asinine "Mystery Box" idea for costing them around $100m all-told on STID when the film finally finishes its run. By trying to play coy with Kahn, even though absolutely everyone who followed the film saw it coming, the studio was unable to sell the film to more casual moviegoers by using the famous villain's name.

In any event, its going to hurt the franchise, as there is no way this one has as much staying power at the theaters as the last... There is way more competition this year. (Abrams first Star Trek had to deal with "Terminator Salvation" as its main competition in the following weeks,). Paramount is spending "Avengers" levels of money on this franchise now, and they're making less than "Tron: Legacy" money back. I also noticed that a quick walk through the toy department at Walmart revealed zero Star Trek tie-in toys. I have to wonder how much profit they're actually seeing on the franchise these days.

Iron man 3 made 35.1 m usd that is more than a 50% flop from previous weekend (72.5 m usd), so I guess marvel/Disney have taught us something: how to sell a shitty movie in just 3 weekends all over the world, now I am worried about star wars :(
Kayo - 5/19/2013, 9:28 AM
LOL, here comes the haters

Marvel is winning
Extremis - 5/19/2013, 9:29 AM
I know the twist was bad in im 3 but stop hating it for a single thing.killian was very good.but still hurts that mandarin was butchered.
SageMode - 5/19/2013, 9:31 AM
IRON MAN 3 is climbing that ladder. Marvel FTW Babay!!!!!
rocky - 5/19/2013, 9:33 AM
WHOA look at IM3 still going

top ten best 3rd weekends ever
that sounds to me like good word of mouth
despite the haters on the web

rocky - 5/19/2013, 9:35 AM
Gotta admit I'm a bit bummed
about Star Trek's box office
I thought it was a pretty damn good movie
Pitt - 5/19/2013, 9:36 AM
IM3 was OK, could have been Epic. The people defending IM3 do have bad taste in movies. A Norse God, a angry green guy, a flying 2 billion ton flying aircraft carrier but the Mandarin wouldn't work in IM3??? LOL from EPIC to average
kenjim152 - 5/19/2013, 9:36 AM
@DoubleD I agrees with Soto y do not even know how box office works, and u are already saying IM3 has (technically) done better than TDK? Dude IM3 has gone Down more than 50% 2 weekends in a row, just to give u an idea TDK just went 50 something% Down after openning then it kept stable 4 a while, IM3 is not getting that for sure (according 2 its numbers) and BO overseas , well nobody here seems to Understand how it works any ways :S
NeoBaggins - 5/19/2013, 9:38 AM
[email protected] being sad. Trek was a great film. Don't let a lack of monumental turnout depress you because the film deserves a billion more than Iron Man does. If you enjoyed it, you win. There's a large market already established for films like Fast and Furious, GIJOE, Resident Evil, Transformers and Iron Man 3. Hell, I had a cousin ask me about Iron Man 3 and I remember her going on about how she doesn't like these Lord of the Rings and stupid super hero movies. But when it seems like the big thing everyone is into, it becomes important to them. Then, forgotten.

Enjoy what you like. Stop trippin.
Webhead007 - 5/19/2013, 9:38 AM
Star Trek definitely deserves to be in the billion dollar club more than Iron Man 3. What a shame........
Godkiller89 - 5/19/2013, 9:39 AM
Im sry but star trek into darkness (or should i say star trek the wrath of khan remake)sucked balls. not that bad it had it moment but it was unoriginal in every way and i hope jj's not around for the next one
kenjim152 - 5/19/2013, 9:39 AM
@Soto Good now we are talking! At least somebody knows what he is talking about!
rocky - 5/19/2013, 9:40 AM
LOL @ Levit

The general movie going audience has spoken
sometimes it isn't about loyalty to source
but about being a good enjoyable film
Kayo - 5/19/2013, 9:40 AM
coming up:

yeah baby! much win!
Webhead007 - 5/19/2013, 9:42 AM
@Neo You know what? You are right! I [frick]ing loved that movie and I'm not going let this ruin it!
SychoSid85 - 5/19/2013, 9:44 AM
Saying Spiderman 3 was better than Iron Man 3 is a unforgivably false statement, and should be deleted immediately.
rocky - 5/19/2013, 9:45 AM
hate blinds^^^ take their comments with a grain of salt
SychoSid85 - 5/19/2013, 9:47 AM
I'm fan of both of the big two, and their comics/cbms. Why all the childish hate on here?
gmoney0505 - 5/19/2013, 9:51 AM
Due to 3D and more kids are able and parents are way more willing to take kids to see IM the TDK, there is no surprise there. Added to fact it came off the coat tails of Avengers less than a year ago, it has way more help to reach that than those movies. Made a billion and majority of people who watched it hates it.
