Carrie Fisher Says She'll Play Princess Leia "Less British" In STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

The actress has gotten in trouble for talking about returning as Leia for J.J. Abrams' new Star Wars movie in the past, so she's understandably a bit more cagey in this new interview. But, she does share he thoughts on the character and reveals her favorite Leia moment from the trilogy.

Carrie Fisher made a guest appearance at the Hay festival in Wales recently, and answered a few Star Wars related questions -- without spilling too many details of course. But now that it's been officially announced that she'll be joining fellow original trilogy cast members Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in J.J. Abrams' tentatively titled Star Wars: Episode VII, she can at least discuss her excitement about her own unique way! "We all look a little melted. It's good to see other melted people," Fisher told a packed audience at the festival. "And it is good to have us all in a room because it's unique. I mean, I don't suppose they have reunions for the Gone With The Wind gang.". She also says she intends to play the character "less British" this time around. You may remember that Fisher affected a pretty noticeable Brit accent in the first film, but it had all but vanished by Return Of The Jedi.

"We are doing it over again so I can get Princess Leia right this time. I think less British. I looked a little pretentious faking the accent. It was sort of a viral accent – it came and went. I would rather have played Han Solo. When I first read the script I thought that's the part to be, always wry and sardonic. He's always that. I feel like a lot of the time Leia's either worried or pissed or, thank God, sort of snarky. But I'm much more worried and pissed than Han Solo ever was, and those aren't fun things to play."

Fisher is asked a few more questions but aside from suggesting that it'll be very unlikely that we'll see Leia sport that now iconic hairdo again, she isn't willing to spill. But, she does talk about that famous scene in which she strangles Jabba the Hutt. "I had a lot of fun. They asked me on the day if I wanted to have a stunt double kill Jabba. No! That's the best time I ever had as an actor. And the only reason to go into acting is if you can kill a giant monster.". More at the link below.

That masked some hidden message..
SuperCat - 5/26/2014, 1:21 PM
Really? I've seen the first film a 100 times and never noticed the accent.
MrCBM56 - 5/26/2014, 1:22 PM
I don't remember a British accent. But I haven't watched the originals in years.
MrCBM56 - 5/26/2014, 1:22 PM
@SuperCat Haha exactly! Me neither. I just thought my memory was dodgy but glad I'm not the only one.
MexicanSexyman - 5/26/2014, 1:23 PM
So less bland acting?
SuperCat - 5/26/2014, 1:25 PM

Nope. Not alone :) I gotta watch that one again.
Abary - 5/26/2014, 1:28 PM
Everyone sounds British to themselves, don't mean you actually are.
AlexanderLykins - 5/26/2014, 1:31 PM
Wait, what?

GeekyCheekyChic - 5/26/2014, 1:39 PM
wow I have seen Star Wars over a hundred times...not once did I hear 'british' from her lips. Vader sounds more Brit. Is she using again? cuz this sounds like the mutterings of someone high as shit.
batzack - 5/26/2014, 1:39 PM
I just clicked on report comment by accident (obviously cancelled) and it said "annoying wanker". Do Americans say wanker ?
Comedian03 - 5/26/2014, 1:43 PM
...........She had an accent?
McGee - 5/26/2014, 1:44 PM

F*ck you Brits.

You think we forgot about 1812? Do you? WE HAVEN'T! jerks!

mrHJK - 5/26/2014, 1:45 PM
@batzack: no we don't, unless we do it with a "British" accent.. I think Fisher was trying to sound like a princess and a leader in Episode IV, so she thought enunciating her words made her British
Pasto - 5/26/2014, 1:46 PM
I just totally cut one.
ndwwrestler2 - 5/26/2014, 1:47 PM
In A New Hope she sounded British...ish, I suppose. But only when she was having that convo with Tarkin did I hear any type of British influence.
RorMachine - 5/26/2014, 1:48 PM
She definitely sounded British.

blackandyellow - 5/26/2014, 1:51 PM
Less British is always a good thing.
bs77 - 5/26/2014, 1:52 PM
I remember a slight accent. Its mostly when she's berating Vader and Han. It`s the tone she uses. I always thought of it as a snobby royalty speech.
McGee - 5/26/2014, 1:55 PM
Han Solo Americanized dat ass?!!????!!!? :/
McGee - 5/26/2014, 1:56 PM
All I know is, when I went down on Ror so I could win a free DVD copy of Jack The Giant Slayer, I spent the next week eating nothing but potatoes and ordering Shamrock shakes at McDonalds.
Alienman - 5/26/2014, 1:57 PM
Pickin' up what yer putin' down.
MCU4TheWin - 5/26/2014, 1:58 PM
Less British = American Red Neck?
McGee - 5/26/2014, 2:02 PM
....I didn't even win that copy of Jack The Giant--HEY! Is it true you Brits can tell when an American is doing a shitty English accent?

Because we sure as hell can't tell when you guys do shitty American accents.

Unless you're Sam Worthington.
RorMachine - 5/26/2014, 2:02 PM
McGee, and I never did sent the dvd.

wookiefit - 5/26/2014, 2:11 PM
Funny, I never thought of her as having a British accent. And her teeth look normal. Huh!

wookiefit - 5/26/2014, 2:12 PM
My 6 yr old daughter has that pic on her shirt
Pasto - 5/26/2014, 2:12 PM
Lesson number 1:
Never say Detroit rules in a Cards Against Humanity chat room...
McGee - 5/26/2014, 2:12 PM
Let it be known that only Josh will give you free stuff in exchange for sexual favors.

That's how I got Green Lantern on VHS.
NeoBaggins - 5/26/2014, 2:13 PM
The accent begins and ends in A NEW HOPE. All in the Alderaan scene.
MrCBM56 - 5/26/2014, 2:15 PM
@0mega You cared enough to click on the... Forget it. OKC FTW!
sameoldthing - 5/26/2014, 2:15 PM
Young Miss Fisher would recieve a gift from me on her tummy.
Old Fisher...umm,well to stop her talking..her mouth would do.
Star Wars!
AlexanderLykins - 5/26/2014, 2:15 PM
That was fast.
wookiefit - 5/26/2014, 2:29 PM

MrCBM56 - 5/26/2014, 2:31 PM
@0mega Not the biggest fan of them either. I was hoping Clippers would win in their series but it is what it is.
HugoStrange87 - 5/26/2014, 2:32 PM
Leia had the English accent going when she was captured by Vader. After that it was basically gone.
maninfinesuit - 5/26/2014, 2:36 PM
Malcopunch - 5/26/2014, 2:36 PM
I am tired of Americans thinking there is only one British/Scottish Accent like Scotland there is no true accent. A Scot from Aberdeen is going to have a different accent from one in Edinburgh.
maninfinesuit - 5/26/2014, 2:38 PM
datNAMEtho - 5/26/2014, 2:41 PM
But will she loose weight? That's the question.
