Ewan McGregor Open To Returning As 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' In STAR WARS EPISODE VII

Ewan McGregor Open To Returning As 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' In STAR WARS EPISODE VII

Arguably the star of George Lucas' unpopular prequels, Ewan McGregor has finally revealed whether he would be willing to reprise the role of 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' in Disney's (and Matthew Vaughn's?) Star Wars Episode VII. Check it out after the jump!

We've heard from a lot of actors who starred in both the prequels and original Star Wars trilogy about whether or not they would be willing to reprise their roles in Disney's "Episode VII", but Digital Spy recently caught up with Ewan McGregor to see if he would be interested in bringing 'Obi Wan Kenobi' back to the big screen. As it happens, he would, although how this would work when "Episode VII" will presumably be set long after the death of Kenobi is another thing altogether. While Alec Guinness portrayed the character in the original trilogy, the fact that he passed away in 2000 obviously means he can't return as a ghost. It wouldn't make an awful lot of sense for his ghost to suddenly become younger and it could in fact be argued that there is really no need to bring the character back in any form! What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below.

As a ghost?
Greengo - 12/3/2012, 9:30 AM
Lol. Come on Naomi get with it.

Apart from the special effects and light saber battles, Ewan McGregor's performance was the only thing I really liked from episodes I, II, and III. Especially II and III.
NerdyGeek - 12/3/2012, 9:34 AM
BREAKING: That Stormtrooper in the background of ROTJ says he would love to appear in EPISODE VII
Happy11 - 12/3/2012, 9:40 AM
McGregor was the best thing in ep2,3 the energy he put into the Darth Maul and Anakin fights was excellent. Seeing them on the big screen was the best thing about the prequels.

Heard Chewbacca contracted mad cow disease.

Flashbacks, and I'll tell you how. The ONLY way this new series can bridge to the prequel trilogy (in my head) would be for the villain to flashback to his days on the Council...

That's right! I think Mace Windu would be the perfect villain and new Sith Master. The story arc could vary differently from the other two, where the villains journey (through flashbacks) would be more interesting than the protagonist's (until EP.IX)

It would be cool to see a spinoff of Obi-Wan on Tatooine. Fighting Tuscan Raiders. Some Cantina woes. Maybe interaction with Owen ("you're uncle wouldn't allow it"). Like the Sideshow "Mythos" Obi-Wan: http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=200108

On a side note, I love Naomi Watts.

@Nomis hahahaa

Still 99% people!!!

Naomi Watts is so hot, She maybe old enough to be my mom but i'd still marry her in a heart beat.
JohnnyKrypton - 12/3/2012, 10:18 AM
Ewan was the best thing in the prequels, hands down, but if they were going to bring back Ben's ghost, I'd rather see a CG Alec Guinness (maybe Ewan can do the voice?) to keep consistent
AnungUnRama - 12/3/2012, 10:20 AM
"finally revealed", so had he been asked several times before but wasn't willing to answer then?

Well nothing that special about this news. He was asked and simply answered that question. "If they need me" That says averything. He knows that there is no part for (his) Obi in the sequels, but wouldn't be as a dick as Liam Neeson not to come back if needed.
Sanderman - 12/3/2012, 10:21 AM
How Bout we just bring in some new characters
Danbojohnj - 12/3/2012, 10:24 AM
Clone Wars spin off please!
NoAssemblyReqd - 12/3/2012, 10:29 AM
Interesting idea @scabsallover, except for the flashbacks, which have never really been used in the STAR WARS movies. The only out-of-real-time technique the movies have used is the brief dream sequence in ROTS.
niknik - 12/3/2012, 10:32 AM
Only two ways that could happen and make any sense at all.

1.) Time travel

2.) Clone or son of Obi

Anything else would be rediculous.
toco89 - 12/3/2012, 10:37 AM

Which let's you know how great of an actor he is. He's great in talk shows too, guy's a true entertainer.
CharacterAssassin - 12/3/2012, 10:43 AM
Still waiting for SpaceBalls 2: There's No Going Back
Ha1frican - 12/3/2012, 10:48 AM
I say let Yoda Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader go. The end of episode 6 was a satisfying end for those characters. Although i would love to see Luke as a force ghost....
Ha1frican - 12/3/2012, 10:50 AM
Yknow they have never showed or even mentioned another one of Yodas race, i wanna see that!
subzero1077 - 12/3/2012, 10:52 AM
I thought I read somewhere that Ewan McGregor wasn't a fan of being in the prequels after ROTS. Either way, I think he was one of the best things about the prequels and would love to see him come back in some way.
goatman - 12/3/2012, 10:54 AM
Did you guys forget they had the balls to redo the ghost scene in Return with a young Anakin?
2gold - 12/3/2012, 10:57 AM
Can they bring back Jar Jar with his head on a spike?
Hodor - 12/3/2012, 11:04 AM
@ Ha1frican- Technically, there was another of Yoda's species in EI. Yaddle. I think they removed her in the Blu Ray release... I haven't re watched it to confirm.
BIGBMH - 12/3/2012, 11:06 AM
If they were to bring Obi-wan back (not sure if they should) it would make sense to use Ewan McGregor and age him to look like Alec Guinness instead of getting a random old man or trying to create a digital Alec Guiness.
Minato - 12/3/2012, 11:15 AM
So X-men and Star Wars are mixing actors from previous installments
Fogs - 12/3/2012, 11:27 AM
He was the best actor on the prequels. Period. But I don't know if it would make sense.
DravinClaw - 12/3/2012, 11:34 AM
well in the books Luke has a hard time communicating with Ben and Yoda(if they go that route) so there is no point in him to be in it plus all the make up in the world wont make him look like Sir Alec or a better actor
Zorsey - 12/3/2012, 12:18 PM
"It wouldn't make an awful lot of sense for his ghost to suddenly become younger"

So much LOL in that I don't even know where to begin.
Durango95 - 12/3/2012, 12:20 PM
I wouldnt be opposed. I liked EM's Kenobi. Could be since other characters are force ghosts..ghost Jedi council members? He would be rebuilding the Jedi after all...
CorronZenith30 - 12/3/2012, 1:02 PM
Yeah, he could make an appearance as a holographic message in a Jedi holocron... Discovered by either like or his son? Could work
CorronZenith30 - 12/3/2012, 1:08 PM
Sorry, meant to say "Luke or his son" curse u predictive text
CapFanLex005 - 12/3/2012, 1:23 PM
AC1 - 12/3/2012, 1:31 PM
McGregor was easily the best thing in the prequels, he was completely convincing as a younger version of Alec Guinness' character, and really embodied Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Having said that, I see no reason for the character to return, and it wouldn't work from a technical standpoint either as his ghost was shown as Ben, as played by Guinness, so it'd mess up continuity by showing his force ghost as younger in a sequel...
AC1 - 12/3/2012, 1:32 PM
@CorronZenith30 holocron could work, as long as there's a story reason for it and not just trying to force an Obi-Wan cameo...
WarnerBrother - 12/3/2012, 1:49 PM
For many younger fans that grew up on the prequels,EM is more representative of Kenobi then Guiness.

Just because Guiness did all the force ghost stuff before doesn't rule out EM in makeup doing the duty vs a random older actor.

As someone who saw Star Wars when it was just Star Wars in 1977, I would argue that while the prequels don't match the original trilogy, they were hardly unpopular.

Many kids/young adults were introduced to Star Wars by the prequels and the Clone Wars cartoons and have a love for them even if the popular sentiment is to bash them.
beane2099 - 12/3/2012, 2:25 PM
Can we just all agree that anyone who has ever been involved in any aspect of a star wars movie, cartoon, or special edition slurpee cup would be open to return in the new trilogy? Everyone except Jake Lloyd that is. And I guess David Prowse, who has been banned for life from Star Wars conventions.

That said, if you were going to have Obi Wan show up, using an aged Ewan McGregor would be the best option.
prad18 - 12/3/2012, 2:37 PM
Where has Naomi Watts been living that she hasnt heard about these new star wars films. She is still smoking hot tho. Love her.
