George Lucas To Donate The Majority Of Disney's $4 Billion To Worthy Causes

George Lucas owns 100% of LucasFilm, meaning that the $4.05 billion Disney has paid for the studio is ALL his. That's a lot of money! Well, a spokesperson for the filmmaker has revealed that he intends to donate the majority of it to good causes. Hit the jump for details.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that George Lucas is planning to donate the majority of the $4 billion fortune that Disney are paying him for LucasFilm to good causes. "George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors," a spokesperson told the site. It's not clear where exactly the money will end up (it's thought that it will mostly go to causes which focus primarily on educational issues), but the writer and director is well known for his substantial donations to causes such as the Film Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company," Lucas said in a statement Wednesday. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy."

At least the prequel trilogy makes some sense now XD
Howardad - 11/1/2012, 4:48 AM
I know the real reason Disney bought Lucasfilms. They want to put Howard the Duck into the Avengers 2. Howard the Duck will tie in The Avengers and GOTG. Let's see if my prediction comes true. And good for him most people would just keep it and be greedy.
marvel72 - 11/1/2012, 4:48 AM

luxterg - 11/1/2012, 5:34 AM
People are going to say "who cares, he's already rich and doesn't need the money" and all kinds of other such things.

Bottom line, he's going to give away billions in his lifetime to worthy causes and then half of whatever he has left upon his death as per the pledge he's already made.

That's a lot more than I've ever done. Before criticizing, ask yourself... what have you done.

He's earned my respect as a man.
calin88 - 11/1/2012, 5:35 AM
Worthy causes: bitches and booze!! No really, good for him
NerdyGeek - 11/1/2012, 5:39 AM

The force is strong in him.

@jessepostal You don't even know what a write off is. ;P

xstryker - 11/1/2012, 5:56 AM
Well done, Mr. Lucas.
billytwohats - 11/1/2012, 6:08 AM
He should donate his millions to the traumatised middle aged Star Wars fans fund.
SuperSomething616 - 11/1/2012, 6:11 AM
Flipping heck...guess this wasnt about the money after all....

Bravo Mr. Lucas...still along way to go to redeem yourself but this is a good start!!! lol
TheAbomination - 11/1/2012, 6:13 AM
He's going out like a class act. Atta boy, George. You may have tarnished your legacy, but it's good to see your money from this deal go to a worthy cause.
Mego - 11/1/2012, 6:16 AM
Thats a really stupid idea,
When you give to charity, only a small percent goes to your target.
With such money and a history of starting and managing a business his best move would to be to organize his own Charity and get charity directly to people.
Or simply build some high tech schools in certain areas of this country that have been long forgotten by the system such as Schools that serve the poor in inner cities or Appalachia.

Simply giving money to organised charity could be a waste just like giving it to organised religions.
A popular Nascar driver donated 1 million dollars to a small Christian School so it could remain open. What he didnt know was someone had been embezzling money there. After he donated, the million kinda disappeared and the school closed anyway.
Lucas should start his own charity.

Kalel219 - 11/1/2012, 6:21 AM

He has his own charities...
plasticman - 11/1/2012, 6:25 AM

mikesinuman - 11/1/2012, 6:26 AM

DaRealDaBUU - 11/1/2012, 6:26 AM
Two days ago Star Wars (OT) was nothing but a fond childhood memory, not registering anywhere near my radar. Now, its the only thing on my radar. I'm way too old to be this excited, how is this even possible.
lntrn8 - 11/1/2012, 6:37 AM
:) . . . great!

To rise to sainthood, you must now release all the Carrie Fisher wardrobe fitting footage & "secret" backstage photos.

MiracleMe - 11/1/2012, 6:38 AM
What I love about that photo is the fact that Mickey looks more badass than Jaba, Lucas!
evilness - 11/1/2012, 6:53 AM

lol jk, much respect to the guy
GodzillaKart - 11/1/2012, 6:56 AM
He has been working for years on The George Lucas Educational Fund.

Whatever you think of his movies, this man has a lifetime of being a generous giver.
CoulsonLives - 11/1/2012, 6:56 AM
Darth Lucas is one with the force... Lucas= Anakin/Darth Vader
evilness - 11/1/2012, 6:57 AM
btw, i can't be the only one that sees a character arc like darth vader here do i?

a man who was great once (original trilogy), went over to the dark side (prequel trilogy), and then redeemed himself in his last days (return of the jedi).

evilness - 11/1/2012, 6:57 AM

beat me to it.
BillyM67 - 11/1/2012, 7:02 AM
