More From Mark Hamill On Returning As Luke Skywalker In STAR WARS EPISODE VII

The actor speaks a little more about the conditions of his return. He doesn't reveal if any formal offer has been made, but definitely suggests that there has been some discussion, and he sounds like he's ready to commit - if the story requires it..

Probably the biggest question fans have about the new Star Wars movies coming our way is: Will they bring back characters from the original trilogy? Well, it seems Mark Hamill - who played the hero of the saga, Luke Skywalker, in those first three films - has a few questions of his own that need answering before he'll commit to anything. E UK caught up with the actor at the premiere of his new movie, Sushi Girl. "We have questions about it," said Hamill, speaking for himself and Carrie Fischer. "And really, they're not even at the stage where they're able to answer those questions because, as far as I know, is there a story yet? Until I know more about what they have in mind, I think it's better to let Lucas Film make the announcements." Hamill was then asked about the possibility of another actor taking over the role - perhaps playing a slightly younger version of the character. "If they were going to do a story where Luke was too young or too old for me to play, they would get an age appropriate actor," he said. "There's so many good people."

Use the force Luke lol I would like hamill to be in an obi wan role either training Ben or the twins.
gillri - 11/28/2012, 5:46 AM
god he looks terrible, not aged well at all
XxComablackxX1937 - 11/28/2012, 5:49 AM
I'd like him to come back as Luke an have him as more of a Yoda Obi Wan role in the film. Doesn't matter how much he has aged.
r0njeremy - 11/28/2012, 5:50 AM
mark hamill is good in the master jedi obi-won kenobi role ,more over mark is an icon for the joker voice on tv he can do this star wars project.''
ComfortablyNumb - 11/28/2012, 5:51 AM
Mark my words...Disney will use the original actors IF the story calls for it. The worst thing they could do after having just bought the franchise would be to keep those original characters in the new trilogy and not use the original actors. A lot of the hardcore fans would be very upset about that.
marvel72 - 11/28/2012, 5:51 AM
alec guinness was 60 odd when he did star wars, mark hamill is 60 odd now.

perfect for an obi wan kenobi role, make it happen.
Jollem - 11/28/2012, 5:55 AM
when 61 years old you reach, look as good you will not ehh
Maculis - 11/28/2012, 6:00 AM
who's he playing? the emperor?
AnungUnRama - 11/28/2012, 6:03 AM
If they needed an even older Luke, they easily could use make up to age Mark. But I don't think/hope they will need an older Luke. At the very least not in E7. This would mean a too far jump into the future after E6. Then there would hardly be a story connection to the OT, as the Repiblic and the Jedi Order would pretty much be rebuild by then. But I think that would be the most interstung story. So they rather have a smaller gap between E6 and E7 than the real life's ~30 years. So Mark would rahter be too old for the part. But then I wouldn't like them to recast the role, but rahter deage Mark digitally. Disney has experience in doing this since they did the same with Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy. The technology has advanced since then, so it would be feasible at least. Maybe the gaps between E7 and E8 as well as E8 and E7 are about 8 to 10 years (the gaps between the prequels were about that, too), so they might not need to deage him digitally for all three films but only the first one. For the second one the might be able to use make up and for the third one Makr might be in the right age anyway.
SuperSomething616 - 11/28/2012, 6:06 AM
@ Jollem - HAHAHAHA!! Bazinga!!!
Mugwamp - 11/28/2012, 6:23 AM
You who are making comments about his appearance...geez guys, he's 61! You're lost in time thinking that he should look like he did 30 years ago! Give the man a break. Plus, he's had no reason to get fit/ready for any role. He mostly does voice work. With the right story, they'll get him on a plan to look how they need him to for the film. Personally, I think ole Luke has aged pretty well!
jessepostal - 11/28/2012, 6:24 AM
@jollem, i think you've got a fan :)
comicb00kguy - 11/28/2012, 6:33 AM
for my money, if Luke appears in the new Star Wars film, I would hope that it would be in a "passing the torch" capacity, or perhaps more in the Obi Wan role, training the next generation of Jedis who will take us through the next trilogy. Obviously, the Sith need to have one more good comeback in them, with a final this-really-ends-it epic battle between them and the Jedi in the third film in this trilogy.

And for my money, Hamill is holding up just fine for his age.

Jollem - 11/28/2012, 6:34 AM
@jessepostal - t. hiddles' got fans

CrimsonReign - 11/28/2012, 6:34 AM
He needs to go on a diet and they better have a good make-up crew and wardrobe crew because this man needs some help.
AC1 - 11/28/2012, 6:43 AM
Wasn't he in a car accident that required corrective facial surgery sometime between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi? Still looking pretty good, didn't realize he was in his early 60s! I thought he was in his 50s based on his looks (never had a reason to calculate his age or look it up).

I was thinking though, with regards to this new trilogy - perhaps it should be set a long time after Jedi? Perhaps, decades after Luke, Leia, Han, etc, have died? Luke could return as a Force Ghost, acting as a spiritual mentor to the new main character(s).

And why is there no love for R2D2 and C3P0!? They're the perfect characters to bring back - they're robots so they don't physically age in the films or in real life (regarding the costumes), and the original actors can be brought back to voice the characters, even if they're a bit too old to do the costume work! They're strong enough characters to tie the films together, but not big enough to outshine the new lead character(s).

Similarly, Chewbacca could return looking almost identical since you can't see the actor under the costume, but if the film was set far enough into the future that Luke and co. were dead, maybe Chewie would be dead too.
thalidomide - 11/28/2012, 7:10 AM

Chewy's son is Mexican? lmao!! :)

@batz11 - maculis's was funny:) that'd be crazy if mark played an older luke that turned to the dark side and his kids had to stop him or something

Newbus - 11/28/2012, 7:22 AM
@batz11 "- maculis's was funny:) that'd be crazy if mark played an older luke that turned to the dark side and his kids had to stop him or something"

I remember way back when Return of the Jedi was out there was speculation that Vader would die and Luke would turn to the dark side. Then it was down to Leia in Episodes 7,8 and 9 to finish the job.

Jollem - 11/28/2012, 7:36 AM
i'm kinda hoping for a story line similar to the jedi academy trilogy

MyInnerDork - 11/28/2012, 8:04 AM
I find it funny how some complain about how bad Hamill looks. When you're talking about a new Star Wars movie, Disney will get him the best trainer to get him in shape and there is a thing called makeup to make him look good in front of a camera too.
nld3 - 11/28/2012, 8:21 AM
The plan was always to have an older Luke ala Obi-wan in this trilogy. I think Hamill looks a lot younger than Alec Guinness did at the same age. I though Alec was in his 70s when he was in ANH. Yet he was in his 60s.
pv1 - 11/28/2012, 9:10 AM
I actually (or maybe hopefully) think an older Luke will be more active than an older Obi-Wan in this movie. Remember, Obi-Wan was basically in hiding when Luke met him on Tatooine. He was old, grey and weak compared to what he used to be. However, I've always felt OB1 was always 'in tune' with the Force more than anyone, even Yoda. Being on Tatooine, he probably didn't physically train much anymore but made sure he trained 'in the Force'. But I feel Luke will be leading the new Jedi padawans/knights/council. He will at least need to be more physically active than OB1 needed to be. Of course, he will do his best to pass his Jedi knowledge to others. I think Mark Hamill will do great if the opportunity is presented to him. I don't think he should be the main story line of course, but I think he should play a significant part and maybe (sniff) not make it to the end of the movie.
Ragnaroknroll - 11/28/2012, 9:26 AM
Geez guys is right. Let's see how you look at 61.

I'm sure Mark will shed a few pounds if get gets the part. Have him grow a beard like Obi-Wan. Throw in some gray hair. He will mentor the new Jedi order. It will be freaking awesome.
marvel72 - 11/28/2012, 9:37 AM
i would love to see star wars dark empire adapted.
cole33 - 11/28/2012, 9:43 AM
I would love Mark Hamill back as Luke, make him a complete bad ass. There are so many story-lines for him that would be awesome.

Maybe he's been gone back to dagobah for long periods of time, made himself a personal Jedi sanctuary there like Yoda.

There's a really interesting story to be told after Ep 6, the death of the emperor and vader left a massive power vacuum, and there's no reason to think that the clone storm troopers would just stop doing what they were programmed to do after the destruction of the second death star.

In fact, if you think about it, after the demise of jabba, and the emperor, the galaxy would be in chaos, many systems using the opportunity to make a power grab.
RorMachine - 11/28/2012, 9:48 AM
Sorry but Hamill does not look "Hollywood" 61. He hasn't aged very well, I think he looks closer to 70 actually.
jimpinto24 - 11/28/2012, 9:51 AM
Mark Hamill is too old at this point. Don't get me wrong, I like Mark Hamill, but Ryan Gosling or Jensen Ackles would be better as Luke Skywalker.
Cargo71 - 11/28/2012, 10:19 AM
As I read, Obi Wan meant to be in his late 40's at the time of Yavin's battle, and he was played by Alec Guiness, who was in his 60's. It could work for Luke, too...
JasonZumwalt - 11/28/2012, 10:42 AM
CLASS ACT. Always has been.
plasticman - 11/28/2012, 10:46 AM
Get him in the training room and slap some makeup and CGI on him and he is good as gold, Ror.
yourdaddy - 11/28/2012, 11:07 AM
[frick] recasting.

it isn't star wars without a skywalker (preferably luke), and it isn't luke without hamill.

find a way to write him in mother[frick]ers
yourdaddy - 11/28/2012, 11:08 AM
what a bunch of [frick]ing morons here. why is luke skywalker being an old man such a hard concept to fathom?

doesn't matter if he looks 70. luke can be 70.

i fail to see what the problem is here.
Durango95 - 11/28/2012, 12:15 PM
Hamill should be brought back. If he isnt, Im goin' Obi Wan Kenobi on some ass.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 11/28/2012, 12:31 PM
If they recast Luke or any of the other characters, [frick] them.
vondoom29 - 11/28/2012, 1:23 PM
Mark Ham is so cool. i love how humble he is about the role. Pretty much just accepting that disney will make the appropriate choice, and saying there are tons of great actors out there. my hats off to him. i hope they do a story around 'the fate of the jedi' arc. it would be timeline appropriate and for all the actors. and they could just flash back to important stuff. but i guess they couldnt gap him rebuilding the jedi temple or training Jacen and Jaina. bummer. id like to see the rise of darth caedus though. B-)
bw - 11/28/2012, 1:35 PM
i guess hamill needs to start taking hgh, botox and have plastic surgery, ala sly stallone to look like "hollywood 60". lol.
iuhgluiblbjjkhkjhkljh - 11/28/2012, 2:18 PM
Hamill can play an aged version of Luke ala Ben Kenobi. Fischer can play Jabba the Hutt.
pointman - 11/28/2012, 3:59 PM
Whats with all of the Hamill bashing? Sure he looks old. He has not had to look like the "movie star" part in a while. And I believe someone else posted it right. See what you will look like when you are his age. Its not like we are a bunch of calvin klein models.
I hope they cast him. At the least in the role of a mentor. It would be awesome to see him come in at the last second to save his pupils and show them how its done.
zachman2013 - 11/28/2012, 5:01 PM
Have him come back and the whole trilogy can be him thinking back to his younger years after ROTJ with a younger actor playing Luke.
