New STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Set Image With 'R2-D2'; Next Film Will Shoot In London Too

A new snap from the Star Wars set (posted by the UK's chancellor of the exchequer no less) has popped up online, and gives us another look at everyone's favorite little Astromech droid alongside director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy.

Sure we've had images of 'Artoo' on the Episode VII set before, but it's always nice to see more of his shiny little head. Plus, that's not all we have. The below image was posted to Twitter by the UK's chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne (no relation to Norman), who payed a visit to the set today -- and along with the pic her confirms that Disney/Lucasfilm will be returning to film another Star Wars flick at some stage. In a separate statement he revealed that this will be the first standalone film, which will be directed by Godzilla's Gareth Edwards.

The first standalone Star Wars film will hit theaters on December 16, 2016, a year after Star Wars: Episode VII opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Is that a piece of the Falcon in the background? Or am I reaching for stuff?
MrBlackJack - 6/10/2014, 4:46 PM
That's a piece of the Falcon.
ndwwrestler2 - 6/10/2014, 4:47 PM
Ah. Then I'm not reaching. That's a good sign.

Key cast... please don't make him fly like the prequels
monkeyballs - 6/10/2014, 4:52 PM
It is a piece of the Falcon or the back of the emperor's window on the death star that blowed up. And JJ looks like a douche.

I will watch these on DVD. Lucas' prequels were trash (every one of them) Return of the Jedi was mostly trash (because of Lucas) although is still part of my childhood. JJ's movies aren't bad but they never ever have that holy shit wow moment t any of them. Super 8 paid homage to 80's Spielberg but it just never made it there. Star Drek was tons of fun but Star Drek Into Darkness was boring. I don't expect much from these new Star Wars movies.

BoneSawIsReady - 6/10/2014, 4:53 PM
In fact please keep him completely practical without cgi

VISIONaryNPa - 6/10/2014, 5:51 PM
Expected it to shoot in London, as ILM has built a studio in London specifically for the production on Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars Episode VII.
SidDaAstroSloth - 6/10/2014, 5:51 PM

Wolf38 - 6/10/2014, 6:05 PM
JJ apears to be channeling vintage George Lucas, aside from no beard.
mgeoff88 - 6/10/2014, 6:09 PM
Awesome! R2-D2! He does pretty well with the ladies too:

SuperCat - 6/10/2014, 6:22 PM

polarkyle - 6/10/2014, 7:12 PM
So many cast members for this movie, the only problem is we have no idea who their playing
lawndart - 6/10/2014, 7:14 PM
First, let me start this by saying I like R2. Pimpest droid ever indeed.
But shit, shouldn't his warranty run out by now? Swamps and deserts...asteroid belts and Hoth. Not saying that I need to see him go, but lets start getting some new blood into the movies already. Maybe Luke turned him into an umbrella stand or something. Repurposed!
TyrantBossMedia - 6/10/2014, 7:33 PM
But why is R2 wearing a plaid shirt?
NoAssemblyReqd - 6/10/2014, 7:53 PM
Abrams must not be jumping for joy at the prospect of two more movies in London. He wasn't too keen on uprooting his family on this movie either.

I don't blame him for trying to move the production to LA. Rich or not, making your kids spend their formative years sort of lost in translation (culturally speaking) is not what most people would want to do.
gaikinger - 6/10/2014, 7:55 PM
Monkeyballs - very harsh. I agree with everything you said but I liked both Star Trek films but yes the first one was better. I think its foolish to judge the new Star Wars. I think Abrams is a fan of the original Star Wars and is trying to recapture that magic. He's not a whore like Lucas and from the look of his practical effects work so far I am very optimistic. Give the man a chance.
