STAR WARS Movies Rumored To "Redefine Longform Storytelling" By Connecting Everything

According to a new report, Star Wars Episode VII is set to "redefine longform storytelling" with the arc of the new trilogy already set and the story set to weave through books, comics, games and more, all to make the Star Wars Universe more cohesive and engrossing. Read on for details!

In a very interesting piece over at Badass Digest (which you can read by clicking on the link below), Devin Faraci drops some interesting details about Disney and Lucasfilm's plans for the franchise moving forwards. While Marvel Studios have connected each of their movies into a shared Cinematic Universe, Star Wars will take that one step further. "We’re going to redefine longform storytelling," a Lucasfilm employee reportedly told the site. What does that mean? Well, not only is the arc of the new trilogy planned out in advance (unlike the prequels, which despite having a predetermined ending, were made up as George Lucas went along for the most part), but the story will be weaved throughout other forms of media as well. We've already seen this with Star Wars Rebels as it's believed that The Inquisitor from that Disney XD animated series will be connected to a group of villains seen in Star Wars Episode VII. A number of comic books and novels which flesh out the Star Wars Universe - no longer tied down by the countless entries into the EU - are also on the way, and while it won't be necessary to read or watch all the extra content which comes out, they will apparently flesh out the movies in a way we've not see before. What do you guys think?

Ha, I literally just finished reading this article a few minutes ago. I'm still put off by the uninspired choice of having JJ Abrams directing this movie...but at the same time, stuff like this helps make me a bit more cautiously optimistic. Especially the fact that it seems they're actually PLANNING things out, for a change. We'll see.
SauronsBANE - 8/22/2014, 11:09 AM
And oh, look at that. Another Badass Digest scoop/source. Huh.
MrBlackJack - 8/22/2014, 11:10 AM
I'm not even gonna say anything this time.
blackandyellow - 8/22/2014, 11:11 AM
Really hope that these movies capture the heart and fun of the prequels.

Your move!

"...the arc of the new trilogy already set and the story set to weave through books, comics, games and more, all to make the Star Wars Universe more cohesive and engrossing."

Meaning the movies will suck.

An investigator, a traitor! Somebody sent to take me down from the inside!
Vaportrail - 8/22/2014, 11:19 AM
I think this is what "tie-in" means, and people have been doing it for years.

You can't do it and expect everyone to read/watch everything, so the films will still have to stand on their own.
MrBlackJack - 8/22/2014, 11:19 AM
What the [frick] did you do to that comment?
Spooks - 8/22/2014, 11:19 AM
How about we forget the prequels ever happend? Make them non-cannon. Except for Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan. The ONLY redeeming aspect of the series.

I have no idea how to post a poll.

Why do we even listen to Badass Digest? I swear they're the most conjecturey website on the net. Have ANY of their "rumours" been true?
Philvis - 8/22/2014, 11:39 AM
Not until the past month or so have I ever seen Badass Digest mentioned on this site, much less heard of them period. What's going on there to suddenly make them the new 'scoopsters'?
nibs - 8/22/2014, 11:41 AM
Planned to the end is the difference between breaking bad and horseshit like CSI.
but like yoss said, too much continuity could restrict and hurt the movies. the movies should be first and foremost with everything else an afterthought that attempts to tie into the already-existing story.

I'll wait and see. I'm not overly hopeful for these movies but this kinda helps.
gulducati - 8/22/2014, 11:42 AM
I remember when the Matrix universe tried the same thing 10 years ago. Two sequels, a straight-to-dvd animated short, video games, comics, and more. Kind of didn't live up to the hype, but maybe this can be different.
HachibiTheMC - 8/22/2014, 11:44 AM
I'll admit to a bit of interest in the "redefinition of Longform" (whatever that means)...but not on record

Sounds good!

Never got why people were up in arms about the EU being disregarded in favor of books that actually share the same universe as the films, sounds much better like this, having one cohesive universe across different medias. If they pull it off, should be great, EU already had some pretty good reads.
Reasonnnn - 8/22/2014, 11:49 AM
Here's the thing. All the trades report news that happen to be false but that doesn't mean we should distrust all of them if they're off by a little bit or are wrong.

Makes sense this will be all connected given the Inquisitor and the spin off films
thewonderer - 8/22/2014, 11:49 AM
Oh good, prequel hate. Of course. People can't let go of anything.
sKeemAn - 8/22/2014, 11:54 AM
I thought Star Wars was already the "longform of storytelling". These movies have been around since the 70's. I'm not sure how much more "longform storytelling" you can get.
sKeemAn - 8/22/2014, 11:55 AM

Best gif ever!

Rebels is looking like shit, the current wave of comics are rubbish, all the future stuff they will make is not from Lucas imagination, all this shit for me is not canon, say what you want.
Nomis - 8/22/2014, 11:56 AM
@ sKeemAn - I thought the same thing.
