UPDATE: J.J. Abrams Speaks On His “Wildly Surreal” STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Directorship

UPDATE: J.J. Abrams Speaks On His “Wildly Surreal” STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Directorship

Addressing the hotly-announced news of his latest gig, furthermore, J.J. Abrams describes his forthcoming Star Wars: Episode VII directorship as “wildly surreal,” while also commenting on his plans.

Considering the hotly-anticipated installment's 2015, unspecified, release date and other inferior gigs J.J. Abrams has forthcoming, we shouldn't expect much, if anything, from the Star Trek Into Darkness director about his direction for Star Wars: Episode VII and beyond. However, that certainly won't refrain media outlets and fans from gushing over the big news in his presence. That was seemingly the case during the Producers Guild of America Awards.

“It really is an incredible thing,” Abrams recently told E! Online. “It's wildly surreal. It's obviously way too early to talk specifics,” Abrams said after being asked whether the original Star Wars cast will return. “But I'm excited to actually start it.” During the PGA Awards, J.J. Abrams was honored with the Norman Lear Achievement Award.

UPDATE: J.J. also spoke with the Huffington Post last night, when he added that, “I can just say what I want to do: I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we're just getting started. I'm very excited.”

J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars: Episode VII and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay. J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner. Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg.

valeriesghost - 1/27/2013, 8:25 AM
Lens flares everywhere
EarOne - 1/27/2013, 8:32 AM
what about lawrence kasdan...?? is he still involved as a co-writer..??
TheAbomination - 1/27/2013, 8:34 AM
J.J. Abrams drinking game!! Every time you see a lens flare in an Abrams movie, do a shot. Guaranteed you'll be shit-faced halfway through the film.

But, yeah, looking forward to Episode 7.
MyInnerDork - 1/27/2013, 8:38 AM
Wow. That was a pointless post to write up with four pointless sentences that bring nothing new to the table.
IIIAdamantiumIII - 1/27/2013, 8:39 AM
there is no god! what a douche! give this movie to a real director !
IIIAdamantiumIII - 1/27/2013, 8:45 AM
hes going to be double dicking Lucas and Spielberg the whole time on set. "is this how you guys like it ?, should I go faster or slow down? How about we do this in front of the green screen? that will really get us all off!"

lol, jj abrams looking like bruce banner.
rocky - 1/27/2013, 9:12 AM
JJ seems like such an uninspired choice.
Fingers crossed though
Boekelaar - 1/27/2013, 9:22 AM
Was the cross out 'inferior' necessary?
And did Trekkies freak out this much when he was announced as director on the first one?
If this was any other franchise everyone would be cool but seeing as it's Star Wars all we're copping is some really defensive comments. It's happening guys and it can't be any worse than the prequels. We can only go up and Abrams will do that and even if it's only just better than Revenge (which would be amazing) it doesn't mean he's doing the whole new trilogy. We have two more shots after this to redeem the Saga. So calm your farms please.

NoAssemblyReqd - 1/27/2013, 10:27 AM
Abrams admitted that he was more of WARS fan when he took on TREK. So Trekkers who felt Abrams destroyed their beloved franchise (I'm not one ofnthem -- LOVE his take on it) would probably be overjoyed that he's stepping back a bit to do something he really loves.
zachman2013 - 1/27/2013, 10:41 AM
As long as luke skywalker is in it, Im happy.
PaulRom - 1/27/2013, 10:57 AM
Kasdan and Kinberg are writing Star Wars spin-offs. It was originally said that they were working on Episodes VIII and IX, but then it was reported that they're doing films not a part of the sequel trilogy. It's pretty cool that they're consulting on VII as well (particularly Kasdan). And I'm glad that they got an amazing director and a great writer for this project. Still can't believe the film is being made.
Panoramacon - 1/27/2013, 11:48 AM
What's the story behind the altered title logo? Is it a change Disney has made?
DumbledoreCalrissian - 1/27/2013, 11:50 AM
this feels like if joss whedon directed JL it does kinda seem like a lazy choice.
Effusion - 1/27/2013, 11:51 AM
Star Wars & Star Trek are both Legendary and J.J.Abrams is a genius....May the force live long and prosper
ZOD - 1/27/2013, 11:53 AM
I really hope the old cast is not in the new move, and maybe no Jedi to start with, the prequels milked the shit out them.
dylanmm5 - 1/27/2013, 12:04 PM
Didn't he already direct a Star Wars movie? ;) Oh wait, that was Star Trek with a bunch of Star Wars references!
staypuffed - 1/27/2013, 12:17 PM
@BossWalsh You mad bro?
Very excited to see him direct, I can't understand why the [frick] there are so many haters. He's a talented man, and a genuine person as we saw with the dying Star Trek fan story. Looking forward to Episode VII.
forceflow23 - 1/27/2013, 12:36 PM
It's pretty well known that Abrams took the Star Trek gig because he knew nothing about it and would be able to come into it with a fresh take. In my opinion, I think he's done amazing things for the Star Trek universe. Considering that Abrams has confessed to being a life-long Star Wars fan, I'm really excited to see what he'll do with the franchise.
siggisuperman - 1/27/2013, 1:26 PM
JJ Abrams loves Star Wars and has studied the older films immensely as a filmmaker. A lot of what he does is influenced by Star Wars so I think this will end up very nicely
thatdylhooper - 1/27/2013, 1:38 PM

It'll be interesting to see what Arams does with star wars because it doesnt quite need the rehashing that Star Trek obviously needed, Im sure hes going to avoid the 3 prequels and take all his inspiration from the original 3, it'll be the mixing of CGI and physical pupppetry, animatronics and sets where this film will fail or succeed to a degree... Its going to be incredibly interesting to see how he pulls this off because there are so many pitfalls you could easily fall into when making movies like these. Altho he's done plenty of Sci Fi before he hasnt done anything like Star Wars its still pretty unique
TicklerMan - 1/27/2013, 5:22 PM
Keep Lucas as far away as humanly possible before he casts a whiny One Direction member to be the main villain.

Who can forget the, ....Anikan just got his legs cutt off by his brother like mentor. Feeling the heat from the lava and his impeding doom. Anika takes all his anger and yells out, "I Hate you!!!!!" the only thing missing is, "I'm going to my room".
CapFan79 - 1/27/2013, 5:44 PM
As a huge Star Wars can all I can SW is...it's just a movie. Can't be worse than phantom menace.
Gunjin - 1/27/2013, 5:48 PM
Abrams is going to knock it out of the park. I hope he brings Michael Giacchino in on this. IMO, he is the next Williams.
yinyangpalms - 1/27/2013, 6:03 PM
@TicklerMan Lucas' main achievement in the Prequels was to totally destroy Darth Vader.
He reduced Vader to a stupid, whiny, crybaby punk kid who Missed his Mommy and never wanted to Miss someone again.
All of Anakin's actions in Revenge Of The Sith including the murders of the "Young-lings" also turns Vader into just another mixed up mass murderer.
He wasnt even true evil but just some dumb punk with some mental problems and unable to control his emotions.
Anakin Skywalker is eerily similar to those messed up cowards we've seen go on shooting sprees.
Combine the Aurora theater shootings and the Newton School killings and you essentially have Anakin Skywalker.
And it sucks that after he kills other peoples kids he gets to join the Lightside of the Force just because he wouldnt kill his own.

thebearjew - 1/27/2013, 6:43 PM
go jj abrams!
loki668 - 1/28/2013, 1:14 AM

Monopoly on Sci-fi movies... Not good! ...
WarnerBrother - 1/28/2013, 3:38 AM

Was Vader not a messed up mass murder when he stood by an allowed Tarkin to blow away Alderaan? He's the Emperor's number two and could have stopped the deaths of billions with a single word. I would think that more then killing younglings would be reason not to go to Jedi heaven.

Vader stopped being truly evil in Return of the Jedi when Ben revealed that Vader had been his friend Anakin Skywalker before turning to the dark side, rather then simply his pupil Darth Vader who turned to evil as he explained in the first film.

Before he was a "crybaby punk kid who missed mommy" he was a genocidal tyrant
who gained redemption by saving his own son.

Why would it be such a problem to imagine that Lucas would follow the back story he established in A new Hope and Jedi?

What was Anakin supposed to be? some badass guy that had "gonna turn evil" stamped on his forehead?

If you think that Vader's complicity in genocide with regard to Alderaan is a sign of "pure evil" then I fail to see how you could lump his killing of younglings in with Aurora and Newton as an example of being a coward, having a mental problem or being unable to control his emotions. Both acts (unlike those mass shootings)were done under orders.

Vader was acting under the direct orders of Palpatine when he led the Republic's Army into the Jedi temple. That was not the act of some sick puppy living out a revenge fantasy. It was an act of state terror. The Jedi were enemies of the state and had to be exterminated in the goal of creating The Galactic Empire. An evil act? sure, but not crazy.

Those children had already been tainted by the Jedi culture and could never be trusted to be reeducated in the Sith ways. They would always be a threat to Palpatine's power as they grew up, so they had to die.

The only time Anakin couldn't control his emotions was when he killed the sand people(understandable) and cut off Mace Windu's hand (which is also understandable if taken in context).

Anakin didn't have a mental problem. He acted the way he did because he had un earned power from his conception that was far ahead of his years. He never had to learn discipline over a long time to develop his power as other Jedi, yet he was better then everybody else. When he faced a situation he couldn't control when his mom was killed,he didn't have any years of self control to draw upon. No, he did what he always had gotten away with, control the situation by using raw power.

When Anakin went to Yoda with his fears he was offered discipline.Palpatine gave him a quick and easy solution. That's not crazy, that was a young man who always had it easy making a rational choice to forgo putting the time and work in to improving himself in order to take the easy way out that would give him what he wanted right now.Control by raw power.
