UPDATE: Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg Close Deals To Write STAR WARS 8 And 9

<font color= red>UPDATE:</font> Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg Close Deals To Write STAR WARS 8 And 9

This should make fans of the original Star Wars trilogy VERY happy indeed - Deadline are reporting that both Kasdan (writer on The Empire Strikes Back) and Kinberg could well be on Disney's radar to script the next two movies in their planned trilogy..

We know Michael Arndt is on writing duties for Episode 7, but now Deadline's Mike Flemming says he's heard that Disney have approached Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to script the next two installments in the new Star Wars trilogy.

Kasdan should need no introduction - he not only wrote what many consider to be the best Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, but its follow up Return Of The Jedi, and the best of the Indiana Jones movies, Raiders Of The Lost Ark. While Kinberg has worked on X-Men: First Class, and is currently on board the sequel, Days Of Future Past. Also, regarding the rumor that Disney were planning 2 Star Wars movies a year? Deadline reports: "Disney plans to generate a film every other year starting in 2015". Slightly different, but awesome nonetheless I'm sure you'll agree.

Unfortunately we can't report this as a done deal, as according to Flemming, "the studio will not address speculation.". But he says he's going to go with his sources on this, and why not! I for one really hope it happens, and see it as a good sign that Disney are looking back to what made the original movies so special. Still no word on a director for Episode 7, but it shouldn't be long until we at least get a shortlist.

UPDATE: We may have confirmation, as THR's Boris Kit Tweets..

The site adds: "The pair will write either Episode VIII or Episode IX — their exact division of responsibilities is yet to be determined."

Well...now we know that at least the script will be 100% better than the prequels. I forsee good things in this new trilogies future if they get a good director and cast.
Funsize - 11/20/2012, 3:55 PM
hopes things will get better

In George Lucas's defense. He asked Lawrence Kasdan to come back & co-write Episodes 1-3 but Kasdan turned him down. So Lucas knew he needed help.

According to this, It not that they want to replace Arndt, they like his script for Episode 7.

It's that the studio wants to crank out the movies like clockwork.

gambgel - 11/20/2012, 3:58 PM
2 films a year is too much lol

but 1 a year would be pretty awesome for star wars fans.

Would wish Superhero franchises were like this, specially X-men :D
TheChameleon - 11/20/2012, 4:02 PM
They are keeping & bringing on board a good portion of the cast & now the writers from the first trilogy on these new movies. I am hoping Disney also chooses to create a balance of old school special effects & CGI in these. Ep. 1-3 relied a bit too much on the CGI. So far this is sounding awesome. Still waiting on news for a director. Peter Jackson maybe? Hopeful we will find out soon.
SmellofDuty - 11/20/2012, 4:02 PM
Good. I'm definetely confident in Disney's decisions, they know how to please the people.
SmellofDuty - 11/20/2012, 4:06 PM
The Chameleon- I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson is up for the second Tintin in 2015.G
SugarYumYum - 11/20/2012, 4:06 PM
Every other year sounds about right, 2 a year didn't sound even remotely realistic.

Dont normally heat writer rumors so pretty sure that these two have been approached. Solid choices.

RobLiefeldFan - 11/20/2012, 4:06 PM
wow how about if they write a shitty script... lol
Mego - 11/20/2012, 4:11 PM
This is likely just another rumor that will be dispelled. Lawrence Kasdan has not had a great deal of work or recent success. Doubt theyd have faith in him just because he wrote Empire 30 years ago.
Steve993 - 11/20/2012, 4:14 PM
Seems like every day Disney seem to be going in a good direction with Star Wars which is a good thing because it causes people who were afraid of them ruining it to calm down. Let's just hope they keep going in that right direction and don't take a wrong turn at Albuquerque and do something that will mess things up but judging from this possibility and Michael Arndt writing Episode VII at this point I doubt it and have faith in them.
CoolantTech - 11/20/2012, 4:22 PM
Awesome... the writer of Empire back to write 8 and 9, and a Star Wars movie every other year, if you'd told me this back in the summer I would've laughed in your face
jimpinto24 - 11/20/2012, 4:24 PM
Simon Kinberg did an great job writing the script for X-M: First Class & Lawrence Kasdan did a great job writing the script for Raiders Of The Lost Ark. I hope Disney does hire them both to pen the script.
GuardianAngel - 11/20/2012, 4:25 PM
Great! I loved Empire Strikes Back, but Return of the Jedi is still my favorite.
FanOfTheKnight - 11/20/2012, 4:41 PM
My question is, why go and try to hire new writers for 8 and 9? Why not wait to see how Arndt does with 7? Seems kind of silly and pointless to hire a guy for one movie in a planned trilogy and then immediately after seek out other guys for the rest of the movies. Why?

All too easy. . .

Nobody is afraid of Disney ruining Star Wars, it's already ruined, it can not be fixed! Every shit Star Wars film from Return of the Jedi to the god awful prequels are forever ingrained in Star wars history forever no matter what they decide to tack on the end with episodes 7, 8, 9 and beyond. These films aren't being made to fix anything or even because they are stories that need to be told. They're purely for merchandise sake for a following that lives for saturated markets over integrity.

What they should be doing is remaking/re-imagining the entire thing properly from scratch so it actually makes sense this time around.
Jlocklin - 11/20/2012, 5:11 PM
No one wants to direct 7. What makes you think anyone ever would have the balls to reboot.
marvel72 - 11/20/2012, 5:11 PM
the empire strikes back & raiders of the lost ark are the two best movies from each franchise, exciting times ahead for star wars fans.
CapFan79 - 11/20/2012, 5:29 PM
So far much of this news has been a SW fans dream. I wish they had gone this route instead of the prequels.
soberchimera - 11/20/2012, 5:34 PM
Can he write Episode VII while he's at it?
preacher - 11/20/2012, 5:44 PM
To whoever said "I wish they'd do the same with supehero movies" as far as cranking out one a year, unless I'm mistaken, that IS what's happening with that genre. Typically, since Batman Begins was such a huge hit, there's been at least one superhero movie a year.

Back on topic...I agree with whomever said this is more a merchandising ploy instead of a desire to please the fans and continue the story. That'll be proven if the quality of these sequels match that of the prequels. In my opinion, that's exactly what was behind the prequels. Merchandising, merchandising, merchandising. Makes me sick.

With that being said, I AM looking forward to seeing what happens with these! I love the star wars story, even the stories behind the prequels...just hated the prequels filmed version of those stories.
DrRockso - 11/20/2012, 6:01 PM
Kasdan is a whiny little bitch.
l0rdleg0las - 11/20/2012, 6:04 PM
I pray we get the Empire/Raiders effort from Kasdan and not shitty puppet ROTJ Kasdan.
bazinga85 - 11/20/2012, 6:08 PM
Nice pic bro, I didn't even notice boba until I took a second look:)
HULK2099 - 11/20/2012, 6:08 PM
Finally good news !
InfiniteMonkey - 11/20/2012, 6:33 PM
Best news ever about the sequels.

Well done Disney. Don't let the [frick]ing mouse influence yer decision. LOL

maxxgone - 11/20/2012, 6:51 PM
ok this is certainly a step in the right direction, but is kasdan the same writer he was 3 decades ago? im not naysaying, im just wondering. im gonna look up his filmography, but does anybody know any concrete facts about their current slate of films?
maxxgone - 11/20/2012, 6:53 PM
ugh...i just looked up his recent work from the past decade. lets hope a return to this world can bring up the old skillz...
maxxgone - 11/20/2012, 6:55 PM
and @ DrRockso

what did he do that makes you say that? im out of the loop and curious as hell?!
MutantEquality - 11/20/2012, 7:03 PM

Super12 - 11/20/2012, 7:06 PM
Ugh...can Ceejay please stop talking?
Optimus83 - 11/20/2012, 7:11 PM
Darth Vader is the best character of Star Wars. ...
themcdougalbugle - 11/20/2012, 7:11 PM
Oh GOD NO!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!! The guy lost his writing abilities over two decades ago. How can anyone be happy by this news? He wrote and directed Darling Companion for god sakes. The most cliche ridden, predictable, stupid and pointless movie ever. He wrote, produced, and directed Dreamcatcher, Wyatt Earp, French Kiss, and Mumford. All terrible sloppy atrocities. Kasdan used to be a great writer, but has lost his touch and is far behind his time.
mgeoff88 - 11/20/2012, 7:22 PM
That's fantastic news! I would say ROTJ is my favorite Star Wars film(I'm a sucker for closure), but Empire Strikes Back is very closely behind.
