William Shatner On J.J. Abrams Directing STAR WARS EPISODE VII: "He's Being A Pig"

William Shatner On J.J. Abrams Directing STAR WARS EPISODE VII: "He's Being A Pig"

While the responses to Star Trek Into Darkness' J.J. Abrams directing the next Star Wars movie have been mostly positive, former Trek star William Shatner is seemingly not a fan of the idea.

When it was announced last month that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII after relaunching the Star Trek franchise, reactions were mostly positive. However, the one major concern shared by many was the fact that the same director will be handling the two biggest sci-fi franchises of all time at once. In an interview with Movie Fanatic while promoting his new movie Escape From Planet Earth, legendary actor William Shatner - best known for playing James Kirk in the original Star Trek universe - shares his rather to-the-point opinion of the big news. "He's being a pig. He's probably the most talented director of that ilk we have. But, he's gone too far this time." Of course, it's possible that he's being sarcastic here, but what do you think of his comments?

Disney/Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Episode VII is targeting a 2015 release, despite Abrams reportedly not committing to that date. Michael Ardnt (Toy Story 3) is working on the script.

This sounds an awful lot like Shatner's joking around. I highly doubt he's serious.
Hellsing - 2/11/2013, 12:40 PM
Yes he's gone too far, humanity is totally [frick]ed.
Niklander - 2/11/2013, 12:41 PM
Oh he will forget the hate if J.J Abrams gives him a cameo. But man Shatner loves to start flame wars.
SpoonWielder - 2/11/2013, 12:45 PM
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's kidding.
Paragon79 - 2/11/2013, 12:53 PM
Yea, that deffinetly seems like he's making a joke, I can see him saying this with his classic sarcasm. Seems like this is being taken out of contexts.
longbowhunter - 2/11/2013, 12:55 PM
I've always hated the pick-a-team mentality. Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Marvel vs. DC.
ahhmynuts - 2/11/2013, 12:55 PM
i think this is definitely taken out of context
Squish - 2/11/2013, 12:55 PM
He's clearly joking. Scoop the sand out of your vagina Levi
OmanTortuga - 2/11/2013, 12:57 PM
I want to see Shatner make a guest appearance in one of the new Star Wars movies!!!! It would be epic!
Super12 - 2/11/2013, 12:57 PM
He's definitely joking. Please, enough with the knee-jerk reactions, Levitikus. That's how flame wars begin. The man's just pointing out the truth...Abrams has now control over about 78% of the entire sci-if genre lol
TheBeard - 2/11/2013, 12:58 PM
PsyGuy - 2/11/2013, 12:59 PM
Wow... this is a good way to get a cameo.

Please evaporate.
zachman2013 - 2/11/2013, 1:00 PM
And whens the last time you have starred in a big budget movie? Shat Up Shatner
Superspecialawesomeguy - 2/11/2013, 1:00 PM
Well that seems kind of... random?
LP4 - 2/11/2013, 1:04 PM
He is JOKING people [frick]. Leave it be damn. The Shat always makes jokes and has his own classic brand of sarcasm.

And if he even IS serious, I agree with him completely.

Havensent - 2/11/2013, 1:05 PM
Are people really so dense not to see that he's joking here? Sheesh.
LP4 - 2/11/2013, 1:06 PM
I agree with @Rokker10

With Abrams stepping out of Star Trek what next...a new director comes in to do the 3rd one and will completely [frick] it up. The wonderful cast and crew and settings that Abrams built for his Trek films...all gone to waste.

This guy is awesome. That's the best response I heard to this news... not that ass-kissing bullshit.
95 - 2/11/2013, 1:13 PM
If Brad Bird took over Star Trek 3 and brought 70mm IMAX with him, people wouldn't miss J.J. Abrams at all. Hey, Bird might bring back that cerebral Trek the fans protest for.
DrHorrible - 2/11/2013, 1:13 PM
Who gives a shit? Shatner is notorious for his snarky attitude. I'll bet that he's being very tongue-in-cheek.

Either way, Shatner is awesome. Get the [frick] over it, people.
MediaMan - 2/11/2013, 1:16 PM
I don't know if he's joking or not (probably is)... but I have definitely thought JJ should give Shatner a role in a new SW movie. The ultimate crossover; fans would go nuts. Glad to see so many other people have had the same idea.
CaptainPresley - 2/11/2013, 1:19 PM
Love the Shat! Tell it like it is Bill! We all know JJ wanted to do Star Wars from the get go, but thought that ship had passed, so he settled for Star Trek, and tried to make it as close to Star Wars as he could. When the opportunity to actually direct Star Wars, he jumped (star)Ships.
SimonPhoenix - 2/11/2013, 1:20 PM
Shatner just wishes his point of views were important again.
thejfather1 - 2/11/2013, 1:22 PM
MrYurMomm - 2/11/2013, 1:23 PM

PHUQ YOU SHATNER! I don't see you doing shit as of late.
pintoman - 2/11/2013, 1:29 PM
It was stupid to ask him, and he gave the stupid reporter some crap.

It was also stupid for Lucasfilm to ask JJ (given his role with Trek).

But mostly, it was stupid for whoever was in charge of Trek to let JJ do Trek.
SunfireUrA55 - 2/11/2013, 1:33 PM
Who's William SHITner? Oh yeah that Pig.
TheFascinatingMan - 2/11/2013, 1:35 PM
I've actually had dinner with him once.... He talked about himself even more than he ate!
Durf - 2/11/2013, 1:36 PM
Yeah, I think he's probably joking here. At least that's what it seems like. Relax people
NoAssemblyReqd - 2/11/2013, 1:41 PM
Shatner's butthurt that Abrams and company wouldn't expand his planned holographic cameo at the end of STAR TREK (2009), and ended up cutting it from the script completely.

If the guy wasn't so in love with his own face we would have got a pretty cool wrap-up for his character in that movie.
vtopa - 2/11/2013, 1:43 PM
Shatner is JOKING you tools. Fished in.
WeAreVenom86 - 2/11/2013, 1:43 PM
And this is news, why?
INSTANTJUSTICE - 2/11/2013, 1:44 PM

I hope Abrams gives him a part in Star Wars.

JohnnyKrypton - 2/11/2013, 1:45 PM
Shatner rules!!
RamonSuarez - 2/11/2013, 1:46 PM
Here William, take this.

It will cure your epic case of buttsore over not being cast in the Star Trek reboot.
CaptainPresley - 2/11/2013, 1:47 PM
MrYurMomm - Pay attention. Shatner has been one of the busiest people in show business the last 40 years. He is currently touring his one man show "Shatner's World", and working on a TV special based on it. He's voicing a character in the upcoming film "Escape From Planet Earth", He's writing, producing, directing and starring (with Christopher Plumber) a documentary called "Still Kicking", on top of his "Priceline" commercials and TV guest appearances. Not bad for an 81 year old with 63 years in the business as an actor/producer/director/author/recording artist.
