More From The Rock On SHAZAM; Praises Script And Teases Story And DCU Connections

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reveals that he was hoping to officially announce Shazam at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and then goes on to discuss how long he's been involved in the project as well as dropping some hints about the dynamic between the title character and Black Adam, and more...

In yet another interview with a Brazilian website, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has talked more about taking on a role in Shazam for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Unfortunately, we're once again relying on Google Translate, but it's not too hard to figure out what the wrestler turned actor told Omelette when they caught up with him during his recent promotional tour for Hercules"My trip to Comic-Con was a surprise, so I called personally to executives at New Line and Warner Bros. to see if they would like to announce Shazam me there. Unfortunately, it was not time yet, but the official announcement should happen soon." Of course, we're hearing an awful lot of talk about Shazam and not much else as of right now, so is it ever really going to happen?

"I am 100% sure that the movie will happen We're talking about it since 2008, when I was offered the role for the first time was just a matter of finding the right script, and it finally happened now,"
Johnson promised. "We have a writer who understood the story and brought an amazing approach not only to Shazam, but the power of Black Adam as well." Here's where things get a little confusing though. After reiterating that Johnson has not yet chosen between playing the hero or villain, they add that Johnson, "concluded by suggesting that the film will seek a kind of balance between these two antagonistic characters," and that "the film will be part of the ad leads to adaptations of superheroes from DC, which should happen soon." It's believed that an official announcement WILL be coming later this month, and with The Rock talking so much about the role recently, hopefully we'll get that press release ASAP...

I could see him as either Shazam or Black Adam, so I really don't care who ends up being. I'm not going to complain.
Ignition - 8/19/2014, 1:40 PM
He's playing both.
FordEl - 8/19/2014, 1:41 PM
WB announce it already.
Destined - 8/19/2014, 1:42 PM
Hmmm...the plot thickens. They really might as well just go on ahead and announce this. It's getting just as bad as Jason with the Aquaman rumors/confirmation.
COREY6487 - 8/19/2014, 1:42 PM
personality of shazaam, looks of black adam
ALegendaryPanda - 8/19/2014, 1:43 PM
Well at least the script is done!
ALegendaryPanda - 8/19/2014, 1:43 PM
Now we wait...
JoJo1982 - 8/19/2014, 1:43 PM
How about he play both :D

Would be really cool
Pasto - 8/19/2014, 1:44 PM
How'd I miss this?
EhMaybeSays - 8/19/2014, 1:46 PM
Asa Butterfield as Billy Batson or Captain Marvel Jr, make it happen WB.
Pasto - 8/19/2014, 1:46 PM
Josh has fans?

*Looks out window for flying pigs*
FordEl - 8/19/2014, 1:47 PM
But what he did confirm is that there is a finished script. So thats probably the other project coming in 2016.
Pasto - 8/19/2014, 1:48 PM
"We have a writer who understood the story and brought an amazing approach not only to Shazam, but the power of Black Adam as well."

Dev - 8/19/2014, 1:48 PM
Brett Ratner to direct I bet.
DeusExSponge - 8/19/2014, 1:49 PM
Rock as Shazam? So be it!!!!
SymbioteJoker - 8/19/2014, 1:49 PM
Picture this my friends!:

We have Dwayne in a beautiful Black Adam costume (maybe injustice inspired), he's fighting Clark, grabs him by the neck and BAM!!!! we hear the glorious SHAZAM! with lightning coming down on the last son of krypton. Gives me the willies just thinking about it lol
sKeemAn - 8/19/2014, 1:50 PM
I think he'll play both characters. It can work and it would show his range as actor.
JoshuaGraham - 8/19/2014, 1:50 PM
MasterChief is creeping me out.
blackandyellow - 8/19/2014, 1:50 PM
The Rock as Shazam would be awesome. [frick] Black Adam.
VISIONaryNPa - 8/19/2014, 1:50 PM
I'm so confused. Waiting for official confirmation at this point.

But good on The Rock for nailing a role on WB.

SHAZAM! - 2016 baby ;)
xstartripper - 8/19/2014, 1:51 PM
Asa Butterfield is too old and big. It was distracting in Ender's Game since Ender is supposed to be a bit of a shrimp.
Klone - 8/19/2014, 1:52 PM
I suppose he also praised the scripts of tons of shit films he has been in. We shall wait and see. And drop the American accent if you as BA.
blackandyellow - 8/19/2014, 1:52 PM
Get T.I. for Black Adam.
yossarian - 8/19/2014, 1:52 PM
I hate Johnny Manziel.
Klone - 8/19/2014, 1:53 PM
And when I say drop the American accent, that doesn't translate to doing an over the top (or "ham up" as some people say), stupid, utterly cartoonist and exaggerated one for BA.
VISIONaryNPa - 8/19/2014, 1:53 PM
I never realized this, and i doubt anyone else has, but he's been talking about SHAZAM since 2007.
blackandyellow - 8/19/2014, 1:53 PM
Pettine said they weren't ready to announce a QB today as planned because they both looked so shitty last night.
blackandyellow - 8/19/2014, 1:53 PM
I just want to see a Shazam movie. I don't care if it's connected to BvS or anything else.
DaVinci31 - 8/19/2014, 1:54 PM

. . .
VISIONaryNPa - 8/19/2014, 1:54 PM
2007 interview:

“Shazam, of course, I would love to play. They approached me about [Captain Marvel] and [villain] Black Adam as well,” he revealed. “We’ve been meeting for months. We’re toying with either one. I think it’s up to the fans. Without question.”

So both? Yeah, both characters..
DraculaX - 8/19/2014, 1:55 PM
You smell what the rock is cooking?
BlackIceJoe - 8/19/2014, 1:55 PM
I can't wait to see Captain Marvel on film. I personally hope Captain Marvel will fight along side Cyborg, Nightwing, Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire & Wonder Girl in either a Teen Titans movie or The Titans film.
Zordan - 8/19/2014, 1:56 PM
I would like him to play Shazam
FordEl - 8/19/2014, 1:56 PM

That project has been in development for awhile so they didnt completely start with nothing two years ago.
fettastic - 8/19/2014, 1:56 PM
Why the [frick] would he be Black Adam when he could be Captain Marvel? (that's right, [frick] YOU Marvel comics!)?
Klone - 8/19/2014, 1:57 PM

Ah well, WB has not ditched him.

Oh great, now that I've typed this a slew of comments proclaiming Goyer's greatest with an obligatory list of his CBM credits will follow attacking Marvel despite its zero relevance.
FordEl - 8/19/2014, 1:58 PM

If you really think he's the worst writer in the world, you need some exposure.
JacksonVegaIII - 8/19/2014, 1:58 PM
HHMMMMMMMMM I dnt know jack shit about shazam or Black Adam however am I correct in saying Shazam is the alter ego of a child?

What kind of tone do the comics have?

I have a problem seeing this working with the rest of the DCU if its going to have to be more child friendly and light hearted than MOS n BvS etc, Dwayne Johnsons involvement only adds to these worries.

Ive got high hopes for BvS, I think DC are going to pull off the cinematic universe for one simple reason theyre goin to use the foundations of Snyders MOS n BvS, if they use Snyders Visual style and talent for action as the starting point I think the universe as a whole will be a much richer and more interesting place than Marvel who used Favros wit n slickness as the starting foundations for theyre MCU.

Snyder aint great at dialog or story arc and the subtler sides of cinema which is a problem however I think at the very least a CBM needs to look great (get the page on the screen) and have great hyper violence/action ( again get the page on the screen) and luckily for DC these are truly Snyders strong points, I think what we'll get is a couple of great looking spectacular action packed Snyder lead films BvS n JL which may just fall down on the more intellectual sides of cinema followed by or split up by some films directed by more intelligent directors who will adopt Snyders visual flare/themes to help with the cohesion of the Cinematic Universe as a whole, these are the films that I find to be a truly exciting prospect and then add Del Toros JLD to the mix and weve got ourselves a far far far superior Cinematic Universe than Marvels.

I think in the next decade we'll all come too see that Marvel unfortunately built their 'house' on less suitable foundations..........
bobevanz - 8/19/2014, 1:58 PM
No lol
OnePunchBaldy - 8/19/2014, 1:59 PM
I think The Rock could play both, but I rather him be Shazam.
