Todd McFarlane Updates On New SPAWN Movie; Second Animated Series In The Works

Writer Todd McFarlane offers an update on the planned Spawn reboot, revealing that an Academy Award-winning actor is attached. He also says that a new animates series based on the Image Comics character is in development.

Speaking with MTV Geek at Toy Fair, writer Todd McFarlane offers an update on the next Spawn film. A sequel to the critically panned 1997 film was in the works, but in 2009, it was reported that McFarlane was working on a stand-alone script which would be completely different from the original. Now, he says that he's still working on the script, and he reveals that an Oscar-winning actor is on board (though he won't say who). "I continue writing pages here and there. I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he's on the phone going, 'Todd, where's the script? Todd, where's the script?' I can't say who it is. You could [narrow it down].

"He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine,"
he added. "The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn't have to be 22 for the rest of his life." Additionally, McFarlane stated that a new Spawn animated series is in the works, saying that they're now able to do things that weren't able to be done on the HBO series which ran 1997-1999. "We have 90 minutes all set and ready to go, other than sending it to an animation house. We've done all the voice recordings, we've done all the backgrounds, so the technology is way better than it was a decade ago; there are some spectacular things we can do now that we weren't able to when we were on HBO."

Which Academy Award-winning actor do you think is attached to the new Spawn movie? Do you plan on seeing that and/or the upcoming animated series?

DoodPool - 2/15/2013, 7:53 AM
He's been saying the same thing about these projects for over a decade, Spawn is not a priority of his, he banks on his sports toys now. No news here.
Jolt17 - 2/15/2013, 7:55 AM
Whatever. Just make it happen already.

well what Oscar winning actor, stuck in perpetually "young roles" (the "22 for the rest of your life" comment), is doing so poorly currently that they're hitting Todd McFarlane up all the time? Someone who wants to hop on the comic book movie gravy train?

Forest Whitaker is an amazing (winning) actor, and not afraid to take on this kind of B-movie. Cuba's the only other African American Oscar winner I can think of, and he is most certainly hard up for a job. the more I think about it, the more it's Cuba, and the proportionately less I care
NorrinRaddical - 2/15/2013, 8:03 AM
@ Scabs - right on, though I guess I sort of cancelled out a lot of those, thinking Washington and Freeman wouldn't be THAT interested in this, and some you mentioned were nominated (rightfully so) but didn't win. Cheadle has his, Howard probably wants a shot at redemption. I hope Honsou holds out for a Marvel movie.

We were talking about this at the chatroom earlier. The movie was ok imo.

New Spawn movie sounds awesome but if its going to focus on the "Laurel & Hardy" detectives... [frick] IT.
shamo - 2/15/2013, 8:19 AM

@fettastic Martin sheen has actually never even been nominated for an Oscar.

Go away Todd.

The best thing that could happen to Spawn is for Todd to just hang up the reigns and pass it off to a new creative team. He switched Spawn's identity to this Jim Downing BullSh!t because he's pissed off at the live Al Simmons.

Changing Spawn's identity was the worst in a long string of bad decisions. It doesn't work. Miles Morales, Ben Reily, Otto Octavius will never be SpiderMan, only Peter Parker (marvel [frick]ups). It won't work for Spawn either.

I was looking forward to more Spawn stuff, like 10 years ago. But all this BS about, "yeah, I'm working on the script" crap has gotten OLD and IRRITATING.

Go away Todd.
fceeviper - 2/15/2013, 8:36 AM
We have been hearing this for years now Todd, I'll believe it when I see the press release for the film and animated series.
Invictor - 2/15/2013, 8:39 AM
If Todd in all honesty, is serious about this emerging Spawn film, he needs to get an African American that can seriously act and capture the charisma/psyche. Not only that but Todd needs to make Spawn a character that is memorable and iconic. This can be like DREDD 3D, but box office wise, they need to press marketing in theatres with films that are not only rated-R but PG-13, it will broaden the viewership.
KrazyForKomix - 2/15/2013, 8:43 AM
Spawn? People still read that?

Go fig.
GodzillaKart - 2/15/2013, 8:44 AM
I read the first 10 or so issues of spawn and thought it was a beautifully drawn, shitty comic. Did it ever get good?
KrazyForKomix - 2/15/2013, 8:48 AM
@ Godzillafart

You've hit the bullseye!
That is EXACTLY how I felt.
A friend highly recommended it so I buckled and read the first10.
And I quote:
". . . thought it was a beautifully drawn, shitty comic."
DioFoRio - 2/15/2013, 8:58 AM
he's been saying this for how long?lol
WakeMan - 2/15/2013, 9:04 AM
Spawn is such an overrated character. He got popular because of Todd's artwork but I have never read a Spawn comic and felt glad I spent that money. The character is lame 1990s at its best.
Greengo - 2/15/2013, 9:04 AM
My first thought was Cuba... then I saw someone mention Jamie Foxx.

Lol on both counts.

Spawn was recently in a movie anyays: The Dark Knight
thewolfx - 2/15/2013, 9:06 AM
[frick]! Now i gotta get hbo

I hope spawn gets the movie he deserves

The superman from hell can do it
thewolfx - 2/15/2013, 9:08 AM
Wakeman .... Facepalm
Mego - 2/15/2013, 9:11 AM
Spawn is a cool character but McFarlane may need to consider some sort of change to the premise in order for a film to work.
Its a problem that Spawn, or at least the Al Simmons Spawn loses everything, including his life and soul at the 1st of the story/film.
The problem is you have a character whos already dead but also immortal with nothing left to lose. That severely impairs the drama.
If you look at the best action films ever, Bourne, Skyfall, Die Hard, you have a main character constantly in jeopardy when hes getting shot at and etc. But if you make Bourne, Bond or McClain invincible its a pretty dull adventure.
CharlesLord - 2/15/2013, 9:16 AM
we gotta think, is it an oscar winner for the role of spawn or one of the other characters? there arent that many black oscar winners so i think the person who hes talkin about could be for a supporting role.
Ramiel - 2/15/2013, 9:19 AM
It's Jamie Foxx, isn't it? Ugh...
JohnnyKrypton - 2/15/2013, 9:21 AM
"It doesn't work. Miles Morales, Ben Reily, Otto Octavius will never be SpiderMan, only Peter Parker (marvel [frick]ups). It won't work for Spawn either."

I get what your saying, but the comparison isn't valid. Simmons was only the latest in the line of Spawns to begin with; Spidey is (was) the one & only.
Viltrumite - 2/15/2013, 9:24 AM
This is almost word-for-word what he said about a year ago. I really don't think this is ever going to happen, which sucks since Spawn in its prime was absolutely fantastic, I loved reading it as a little kid. Spawn by all respects should have become and remained the next big superhero character, by Todd eventually lost track of how to run his own character. The series right now is a pale shadow of what it used to be. I wish Todd would just recognize that its time for him to let go and let someone else take a crack at the character, preferably someone who was a huge fan of the property back in the 90s.
