6 Potentially Amazing SPIDER-MAN Spinoff Movies We Actually Want To See From Sony

Venom? Silver Sable? Meh. While those certainly have potential, what you'll find here are the six Spider-Man spinoff movies Sony should be working on if they hope to launch an amazing shared universe.

Earlier this week, we learned that Sony still has big plans for a Spider-Man Universe. Before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 disappointed, the studio was eyeing a third and fourth instalment of that franchise along with Sinister Six, Venom, and a number of other spinoffs (one of which was rumoured to have revolved around Aunt May). While Spidey may now be part of the MCU, his supporting cast is seemingly up for grabs, hence why Venom may be back on and Silver Sable is being planned.

Does anyone really want those though? Venom without Spider-Man is meaningless, and while Sable is a character with some potential, she's hardly the most exciting of possibilities in all honesty.

So, with that in mind, what you'll find here are six possible spinoffs which have the potential to be both amazing and spectacular. From the first R-Rated Spidey movie (it's not who you're expecting) to a far more interesting female led spinoff and even a TV show, all of these could be exactly what Sony needs to expand the Spider-Man franchise without jeopardising his newfound place in the MCU...

6. Scarlet Spider

With Spider-Man: Homecoming putting the focus on Peter Parker's high school days, it makes sense that we'll be getting to know his teachers. One of them being Miles Warren would make perfect sense, and that could very well lead to a big screen adaptation of The Clone Saga. The basic premise of the comic book was that Peter Parker’s clone – Ben Reilly – was in fact the REAL Spider-Man, leading to the former deciding to give up the mantle to focus on his relationship with Mary Jane Watson.

That’s a brief and oversimplified explanation, but a loose adaptation could actually work in a future movie and lead to a new actor (who would obviously have to look VERY similar to Tom Holland if he for some reason wasn’t willing to play this version of Spidey) heading up an interesting new spinoff. Alternatively, Peter could remain Spider-Man in the MCU, while Ben goes off on his own adventures in a fully Sony controlled setting after being introduced in a Homecoming sequel.

Vampires may not be as big as they were now as when Twilight was breaking records at the box office, but a spinoff focusing on Morbius, the Living Vampire could be a hit new franchise for Sony if handled the right way. Dr. Michael Morbius tragically acquired his vampiric addiction while researching a cure for his own rare, fatal blood disease, leading him to come to blows with Spider-Man on more than one occasion.

If he were to be introduced as a supporting character in Homecoming (possibly as another of Peter's teachers), a spinoff could then delve into an extremely different and unique corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing him in contact with all sorts of supernatural foes during his quest to cure himself! While it does appear as if Sony want full control of these spinoffs, a collaboration with Marvel to keep this movie in that world could end up tying Morbius into characters like Blade and Ghost Rider in some sort of epic supernatural team-up!

The commercial and critical failure of movies like Catwoman and Elektra hurt female led superhero movies, but that now look set to change thanks to Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. Assuming those end up being well-received, a movie featuring Black Cat could prove to be an awful lot of fun and fills a big void in the genre. Originally introduced as a love interest to Spider-Man who had absolutely no interest in the man under the mask, Felicia has bad luck powers and an attitude which would help her stand out from both the Halle Berry and more recent Anne Hathaway versions of Catwoman (both of whom are undeniably similar).

Marvel and Sony could easily agree to introduce Black Cat in one of their Spider-Man movies, only for her to then part ways with the wall-crawler to forge her own path. This would need a strong lead - maybe they could bring Felicity Jones back after Rogue One turns her into a household name? - and a great script, but definitely has some serious potential for greatness.

3. The Daily Bugle

Worryingly, we still haven't heard any news about who will play J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Homecoming. There was a lot of backlash when Sony decided to leave the character out of The Amazing Spider-Man movies, and Marvel Studios deciding to do the same won't go down well. Assuming The Daily Bugle and all of the characters that go with it are in the reboot, this idea might now work, but if they aren't...well, how about a TV show revolving around them minus Peter Parker?

There's nothing stopping Sony from taking part of the wall-crawler's world to the small screen (especially now they're pally with Marvel), and a series starring a reporter like Betty Brant or Ben Urich as the lead character would be the perfect way to explore these characters as it could be crammed full of references to Spidey’s world without having too much of a direct impact on the film franchise. This show wouldn't really need Peter as a 15 year old kid taking photos for a major newspaper isn't THAT realistic these days.

2. Scarlet Spider 2.0

If Ben Reilly is introduced but ends up making the same sacrifice as in the source material, then the focus being put on another of Peter's clones in a spinoff could also work really well. Unlike Ben, this scarred and twisted version of Spider-Man made it his sole goal to make the lives of those two an absolutely hell until he ended up sacrificing himself to save his "brother" Peter. It was then that Kaine was resurrected and given another chance at life.

Taking one of Spider-Man’s suits, he moved to Houston and became a hero, tackling a number of threats from his past life along the way. Despite the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice backlash, dark and gritty superhero movies still seem to appeal to Hollywood studios, and Kaine Parker is without a doubt the "dark and gritty" Spidey Sony may want to bring to the big screen! In fact, this could very well be the first R-Rated Spider-Man movie, with a balance of violence and humour similar to Deadpool.

1. Agent Venom

Ok, so I know that I dismissed Venom at the start of this post, but a movie revolving around that villain with Eddie Brock in the suit and no sign of Peter Parker just doesn't appeal to me. For starters, it just doesn't make sense! Agent Venom on the other hand does have some potential. When Flash Thompson lost his legs while fighting in Afghanistan, the returning war hero would then be offered a unique opportunity by his military superiors; to be bonded with the Venom symbiote and go on missions for them.

When he wears the suit, Flash of course has his legs again, although he constantly has to battle to keep the alien symbiote under control as it attempts to take him over and force him to give in to his violent impulses. That alone sounds fun to explore, and handling Venom this way could still leave the door open to another version of the symbiote (which we can assume was discovered after the Chituari invasion and has since been tampered with) escaping the government and finding Peter and Eddie...

@Quicker - Have you read The Pulse and those Frontline comics they did for Civil War and World War Hulk? Throw in some elements from shows like The Newsroom and that surprisingly fun looking Powerless series, and I reckon there's potential with the Bugle for...something.

The only character that's worth a spinoff in Spider-Man's world is Flash Thompson's Agent Venom and maybe Prowler.

No other character in Spider-Man's world is interesting enough to have a film dedicated to them without Spider-Man.
