Alfred Molina On If THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Franchise Decides To Bring In Doctor Octopus

During a recent interview, actor Alfred Molina was asked about The Amazing Spider-Man franchise and to share whether or not he would be upset if the decided to cast another Doctor Octopus. Click here to see what he had to say.

Probably one of the most memorable fight scenes in CBM history is the fight on the train in Spider-Man 2 between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. Alfred Molina, who brought Doc Ock to life on the big screen, recently sat down with Crave Online for an interview. During the sit down they asked him how he would feel if The Amazing Spider-Man franchise brought in a new version of Doctor Octopus. "Well, I think parts are like rental cars. They don’t really belong to you. If they do, when a new franchise gets booted up, they’re bound to, if they revisit similar villains. I think for instance a different actor is going to play the James Franco role and if they revisit Dr. Octopus and they get another actor, that’s as it should be," he explained. He also compared comic book movie parts to Hamlet, saying that it wouldn't make any sense for an actor to claim the part as his or her own.

Production for the second Amazing Spider-Man movie just kicked off, with Marc Webb tweeting a couple photos as well as an official press release from Sony announcing the film. Andrew Garfield is set to return as Spidey with Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey and Sally Field as Aunt May right there beside him. The film will bring in new comers Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Jamie Foxx as villain Electro, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn. The movie will premiere on May 2, 2014.

One of best action / fight scenes in a comic book film...Spidey vs. Ock was awesome.
JatevinM - 2/6/2013, 7:00 AM
If and when Doc Oc are brought back into the series i think Molina should be brought back.
thespiderkat - 2/6/2013, 7:03 AM
by far the best villain on raimi's trilogy.
EdgyOutsider - 2/6/2013, 7:03 AM
Spider-Man 2 was great and is the best of the original trilogy but, it's nothing truly special as many make it out to be. Doc Ock is not that special of a villain. He makes a physical challenge but Alfred Molina is the only reason that role worked.
thebearjew - 2/6/2013, 7:04 AM
hes a good actor spider-man 2 was the first movie i saw twice at e theater the first two spidey movies will always have a special place in my heart
but i think if they do, do ock they should get RAIN WILSON
superotherside - 2/6/2013, 7:04 AM
He was an excellent Doc Ock.
ATrueHero1987 - 2/6/2013, 7:05 AM
Spider-Man 2 is my favorite Spidey movie to date. Also the best reviewed too. That's a fact.
jimoakley666 - 2/6/2013, 7:06 AM
Molina was ACE as Ock. But equally, I wouldn't be opposed to someone else playing the character in the Garfield / Webb series.
Orphix - 2/6/2013, 7:06 AM
I hope he paid Ruffalo for his use of the 'Hamlet Analogy'!

His got the rights on that thing!

Darth258 - 2/6/2013, 7:10 AM
He was a great Ock.
That said I hope that if/when the reboot it they get rid of silly things like him talking to the tentacles and the tentacles talking back..
RorMachine - 2/6/2013, 7:11 AM
One of the best villain performances from any CBM...and I hated Doc Ock at the time!
SageMode - 2/6/2013, 7:11 AM
Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus was the ONLY badass character in the trilogy. They way they reinvented Octo for the big screen was great.
SpiderBat209 - 2/6/2013, 7:12 AM
I love Spiderman; he's my all time favorite hero but I CRINGED during TAS. I felt the embarrassment all of the Green Lantern fans felt after seeing the Ryan Reynolds GL film. I hope to God this sequel redeems that farce of a first installment, and is on par with Raimi's SM2. :(
KeefNCookies - 2/6/2013, 7:13 AM
What a dumb question... *sigh*
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 2/6/2013, 7:16 AM
one of the rare occasions when the film character is a million times better and greater than the comicbook version.

@Gusto: tell me everything you love about Green Lantern!!!!!!!!!!
imnotwearinghockeypants - 2/6/2013, 7:24 AM
Seriously, why would he give a shit?
SpiderBat209 - 2/6/2013, 7:24 AM
Ok, I agree. I'm being a bit harsh, but Andrew Garfield was more of a spaz than the humble/cool character Peter Parker is.

When Uncle Ben was shot. His cry: "UnclebenUncleben" was Hella funny, instead of heart-breaking.

When Gwen went to see him after her father's funeral and he said: "Can't do it, Can't do, it!" I wanted to burst into laughter, but couldn't because I didn't want to hurt the feelings of my girlfriend who took me to see it.

But yeah, at least there wasn't a green race car and race track in TAS. lol :)

Are we back to the Hamlet thing? This guy's been talking to Ruffalo...
blazingkidtes - 2/6/2013, 7:31 AM
he also played ares in ww animated movie he did really well his voice was so spot on I guess people seem to forget that spidey is strong when he got bit with the spider it gave him strength to
Azrael725 - 2/6/2013, 7:32 AM
This guy was one of the best villains in CBM history. He was so empathetic and tortured and he just played the part perfectly.
FirstAvenger - 2/6/2013, 7:36 AM
@jacamron WTF?
thewonderer - 2/6/2013, 7:39 AM
Apparently fumbling every word is the key to Spider-Man.

I liked Tobey. Currently warming up to Garfield.

Molina IS Doc Ock, one of the best casting choices
DTor91 - 2/6/2013, 7:39 AM

Spider-Man's strength is always underestimated. With the types of characters he goes toe-to-toe with, that train is nothing. So this is a problem but Sandman and his abilities are perfectly acceptable? Not to mention, he also pulls his punches especially against common thugs because if he didn't he can possibly kill a man in a single punch.
jobe2009 - 2/6/2013, 7:47 AM
Molina was great in the role.Doc Ock has always been one of my favorite villains.
If they truly are building a Spider-verse, I hope they do like 5-6 movies with the current cast, and have Ock eventually return (say with a sinister six, down the line?) They could structure it like this:

ASM 2: Electro main villain, Rhino side villain, introduce Norman Osborn and have him turn into GG at the end.

ASM 3: Green Goblin is the main villain, maybe have another small villain in the beginning (Shocker or Sandman?). Gwen gets killed. Don't know if Goblin should die yet, but that could be decided then :)

ASM 4: Introduce Doc Ock and Kraven to round out the sinister six. Lizard seems out of place to me so they could do another villain too. Spiderman gets black suit and it helps him defeat them.

ASM 5: Venom saga :)

ASM 6: Return of GG? Carnage? Who knows...
CaptainAmerica31 - 2/6/2013, 8:07 AM
Martian freemen I rest my case
MJPETTY7 - 2/6/2013, 8:28 AM
Spider-Man 2 was fantastic. 2.1 is better, but only cause things are added. As for Amazing Spider-Man, I LOVED that movie!!! If they do decide to use Ock Ock, I would love for him to come back and play the role again. He's that good. Just like J.K. Simmons needs to be J. Jonah Jameson again on the big screen!!!!
Optimus83 - 2/6/2013, 8:46 AM

Bring Back Doc Ock in Marc Webb Trilogy. ...¡¡¡NOW!!!

equal to James Jonah Jamenson
MutantEquality - 2/6/2013, 9:02 AM
I just think Doc Ock has been done so well that they should really focus on new Villians such as doing Venom in the way he should be done, Carnage or even Juggernaut. Don't just keep stirring the same pot.

We hunger for something NEW and AMAZING.
AC1 - 2/6/2013, 9:23 AM
Everyone heaps buckets of praise on Spider-Man 2, but really it's just a decent movie - Alfred Molina's performance just makes the movie seem better than it is because he's so damn good in it. Try to imagine a different actor playing Doc Ock in the movie; it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is with Molina.

Having said that, the current series (and any future ones should this series not use Ock) are in a lucky position, as Raimi changed so much about the character to make him more sympathetic that he could be used in new and exciting ways - I'm thinking the full on revenge mode Doc Ock who wants payback for the arms being grafted to him; the Doc Ock who eventually becomes the Master Planner, one of Spidey's deadliest foes and the guy most of Spidey's super-villains answer to. He could form the Sinister Six and lead them.
PaulRom - 2/6/2013, 9:27 AM
I was rewatching Spider-Man 2 the other night, and it's still one of the best CBMs to date. Molina was perfect as Doc Ock. Can't think of anyone who would be near as good.
AC1 - 2/6/2013, 9:29 AM
Christoph Waltz would be excellent as a more villainous Doc Ock. If he were to appear in this Amazing Spider-Man series, along with the Sinister Six, then I'd like the line up to be as follows:
1) Doc Ock/Master Planner
2) Electro
3) Rhino
4) Shocker
5) Scorpion
6) Lizard (Conners is blackmailed into becoming Lizard again and joining them - perhaps his family is threatened and he's broken out of prison).

I wouldn't include Green Goblin, as I believe he should be killed off after he kills Gwen, either at the end of the same movie or in the sequel. Plus I don't see him as much of a team player - the way I see it, the team should have a clear leader (Doc Ock) and everyone else taking orders, but Norman Osborn wouldn't take orders from anyone.

Plus it'd be cool to see Django and Dr King Schultz back on the screen together, as Electro and Doc Ock respectively.
AC1 - 2/6/2013, 9:30 AM
And I'm so glad that Alfred Molina sees CBM roles more seriously than a lot of other actors do. The Shakespearean analogy is oddly fitting, and seems very complimentary to the superhero genre.
TheRaven20 - 2/6/2013, 9:34 AM
Am I the only one who thinks Giammatti would be better as Doc Ock than Rhino?
sexfoodcomics - 2/6/2013, 9:35 AM
I bet Paul giamanti is playing Otto in the movie and not rhino.
BubblesShedAndBreakfast - 2/6/2013, 10:18 AM
I liked him I just didn't like how his extra arms made the rest of his body strong and invulnerable. I mean come on if Spider-Man punches a human as hard as he can there head would fly off yet he's punching Ock in the face and his glasses don't come off and he doesn't get hurt from punches in Spider-Man 2. Other then that I loved it!
