Andrew Garfield On His Peter Parker Possibly Passing On The SPIDER-MAN Mantle To Miles Morales

Andrew Garfield has said in the past that he'd like to see an actor of a different race play Spider-Man in the near future, and he talks here about the possibility of his Peter Parker passing on the mantle of Spider-Man to a new actor - and character in the form of Miles Morales - in the near future...

"I have given that thought," Andrew Garfield told Comic Book Resources when they asked him for his thoughts on the possibility of an Ultimate Spider-Man movie starring Miles Morales. In that universe, Peter Parker's death led to Miles taking over the mantle and that's something which the actor think could work in helping this franchise transition into the next. "Miles Morales was a huge moment in this character's comic book life. And I do believe that we can do that. It's something I'm really interested in figuring out; an eloquent way of coexisting, or passing on the torch. I don't have an answer, but I think it's actually a really important move. I think it's a really beautiful and important move." That would arguably work really well, and would avoid yet another reboot a few years from now which would like retell Spider-Man's origin for a third time. As for whether he would be interested in sticking around long enough to play an older Peter Parker, the actor added: "I want it to feel like a circle. I want the two ends to join, somehow. I don't know what that means, yet. I don't know what that means in terms of the quantity of Spider-Man movies I do. But I know that I don't particularly want to be a 40-year-old Spider-Man. [Laughs] I do know that time is fleeting." What do you guys think?

Well from what I am hearing about the next Spider-Man movie I hope its sooner then later. I still will be seeing the new Spidy film so I can judge for myself. But I just won't be seeing it opening day. I think seeing Miles on screen would be great. So I hope that happens.

I think Garfield is great as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, but when the times right, I'd like to see Miles Morales take up the mantle.
BackwardGalaxy - 4/28/2014, 11:54 AM
Always love hearing actors talk about getting out of the roles we enjoy seeing them play. That's always fun, even when it's a totally understandable and level-headed comment.
patrat18 - 4/28/2014, 11:55 AM
Hells yes. We need Miles Morales live action.
Gamera623 - 4/28/2014, 11:56 AM
"WHO???" (Said by almost everyone)

Spiderman should be a teenager. Its part of who he is. I understand what Garfield means where he said he cant be 40 and play Spider-man.

But at the same time...Spiderman NOT being Peter Parker is just weird to me.

But then at the same time again...the average Joe moviegoer doesnt really know or care who Spider-man is under the mask. Just as long as he wears the suit and swings on webs fighting crime. So it might work.

I guess my final thought is after Amazing Spider-man 6 or whatever if they decide that Peter Parker is going to pass the torch to some guy named Miles Morales I'd see the movie and make my opinion on wether its good or not after I see it.
sKeemAn - 4/28/2014, 11:56 AM
That would be cool to pass to Miles. Or we could continue the story and get another young actor. Thats always a possibility.
kevberg - 4/28/2014, 11:56 AM
no we dont.
captainireland - 4/28/2014, 11:57 AM
Spidey hasn't even hit stateside yet and they're already asking Garfield if and when he wants to pass the torch. Just like Evans was asked if Bucky would be taking over the shield before Cap 2 hit. I hope they have Garfield signed on at least until they complete the movies they've announced. Recasts hurt my head. I know they're not actually talking about recasting Peter here, but still.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 4/28/2014, 11:57 AM
Instead of passing the torch to Miles, pass it to the next Peter and reboot the franchise.
DoomBot666 - 4/28/2014, 11:58 AM
I'm all for Miles Morales appearing on-screen! Mainly because I reaaally love his costume. One of the best Spidey costumes imo
ComicsBornAndBred - 4/28/2014, 11:58 AM
I support this!!!!! A minority superhero hell yea. I love the miles morales run too

Wow, Garfield already wants out... I guess someone explained to him the meaning of the word 'typecast'.

Right, Elijah Wood? >_<
JoJo1982 - 4/28/2014, 12:00 PM
Well he has a good 8 more years to play Spidey then

Enough for one more spidey trilogy
crushercreel23 - 4/28/2014, 12:00 PM
That's when I'll officially stop watching Spider-Man movies....
XelCorp - 4/28/2014, 12:00 PM
how about you focus on Finishing the Story with the Peter Parker we have atm instead of jumping to these crazy ideas THIS EARLY.
blackandyellow - 4/28/2014, 12:00 PM
Tom would be sad if Peter dies.

Highflyer - 4/28/2014, 12:01 PM
I think it would be cool to see for sure.
blackandyellow - 4/28/2014, 12:02 PM
I prefer happy Tom.

MrSotoMan - 4/28/2014, 12:02 PM
Can SONY do that?

I mean wouldn't Marvel have more rights to create Miles Morales more than Peter Parker? Even then didn't the rights only include Peter Parker as Spider-Man? Not Miles Morales?

Anyways, by the time that happens, I think I would have to give up on Spider-Man entirely. I really don't care where it would go after that because I never had interest him when he first came out nor do I care of his story since canceling it 26 issues in says a lot about how the character is. Like I said, by than, I wouldn't care anymore. Besides, how about introducing a new style to Spider-Man.

How about a contemporary look at Spider-Man where it looks a lot like the 60's Spider-Man. Cobweb armpits and all.
NoPhucksGiven - 4/28/2014, 12:02 PM
id rather have

XelCorp - 4/28/2014, 12:03 PM
Does anyone actually KNOW what they want from Spiderman after this Series ends? Should it be continued with Miles?/ Rebooted AGAIN?/ Or Reverted back to Marvel?
themidnightking - 4/28/2014, 12:03 PM
I'd love to see Miles on screen
XelCorp - 4/28/2014, 12:03 PM
@NophucksGiven- YES
incepshawn - 4/28/2014, 12:05 PM
I'd be into it. The Miles story was so refreshing to read and I can't wait his new series to launch.

Can we for once have a Spiderman franchise where the actor Carries on the role PAST a Third movie?

Happy Brady is always sad after remembering

AC1 - 4/28/2014, 12:10 PM
I hope we see Garfield's version of Spidey grow up, would be cool (now that high schools out of the way with) to see an actual grown up Spider-Man, perhaps one in his late 20s at least. We already saw enough of Peter in college in Raimi's trilogy, so I hope they kind of skim over that this time around.

And if/when they introduce Miles, I'd rather Peter wasn't killed off. Miles could take over for some other reason, or he could have his own superhero name or whatever, but Peter doesn't have to die for Miles to have his time in the spotlight.

Jhuntdaprodigy - 4/28/2014, 12:12 PM
I wouldn't mind seeing Miles Morales on screen eventually, but I know there would probably be more than a few people who would be upset by that move. Especially the general audience who has no idea what the Ultimate Universe is, much less who Miles Morales is. If Marvel Studios owns the rights to Miles, we won't see him either way. Whenever this Spidey saga ends, I'd hope the rights will just revert back to Marvel, but I won't hold my breath. Even if that does happen, there won't even be any brand new Spidey characters to use at that point, and who knows what members of the original Avengers roster will be left. Still, the idea of Spidey in an Avengers film is highly appealing.
