BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Earns Less Than Expected With Still Strong $92M

BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Earns Less Than Expected With Still Strong $92M

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did well this weekend with a $92 million haul, although that's quite a bit less than both Sony and analysts initially estimated. Unlike Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this sequel has NOT exceeded expectations! It is closing in on $400 million worldwide though...

Some interesting facts and figures above, but they show us that domestically, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been something of a disappointment for Sony. A debut of $95 million or more was expected, while $100 million also should have been a likely outcome had the sequel exceeded expectations as Captain America: The Winter Soldier did a few weeks ago. While this is still a solid debut (the movie is hardly a flop), the fact that it will ultimately fail to top the domestic total of Cap's latest big screen outing is not something anyone would have believed a few years ago! However, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should rake it in overseas, but whether or not it will earn more than The Amazing Spider-Man worldwide remains to be seen...

Go cap!
LordMushu - 5/4/2014, 8:30 AM
First?
Scarilian - 5/4/2014, 8:31 AM
Well considering its getting much the same reaction as 'Man Of Steel' and currently has a lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes than the first film it isn't surprising that it would have a slight drop.

Regardless, it will still make between $750-900k as every film in the series has made that amount. Though competition from Godzilla and X-Men Days Of Future Past could detract from this.

Personally I'd guess the 800k mark, but once again, quality doesn't matter with these films as Spider-man 3 is still the highest grossing of the series.

Cap is the best movie!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will see again today!!!!!!!!!!
typicalfanboy - 5/4/2014, 8:33 AM
that's a little odd. it was so well received, but it made less money domestically than man of steel, which was panned by critics?
Scarilian - 5/4/2014, 8:33 AM
For clarification - I meant 'first film' as in first 'The Amazing Spider-man' film which currently holds a rating of 73% compared to 'The Amazing Spider-man 2' which only has 54% at the time of writing.
ReeferInferno - 5/4/2014, 8:33 AM
Cap is now above MoS, woo!!!!!
Chcl - 5/4/2014, 8:35 AM

It was expected at this point, but Captain America: TWS just topped Man of Steel's gross (according to Box Office Mojo).

I think there's a real chance Cap could end the year as top-grossing CBM. If so, I'm a happy camper.
Scarilian - 5/4/2014, 8:36 AM
@Chcl
As much as I want to agree with you - the Spider-man films have each made in the region of $750-900k and TASM2 seems likely to make that much also. So sadly its likely that TASM2 despite arguably being the worse film will make more than Captain America 2 due to the large amount of Spider-man fans.
GA15 - 5/4/2014, 8:37 AM
GO CAP! such a good movie.
Niklander - 5/4/2014, 8:37 AM
Well the day finally arrived Spider-Man lost his touch with the US audience overseas it's going good
Niklander - 5/4/2014, 8:38 AM
Why are we comparing Cap 2 earnings with MOS?MOS in now on Blu Ray who gives a shit about comparing the box office results now!?
Abary - 5/4/2014, 8:38 AM
The movie had it's problems, and LOTS of them, but in the end it was decent. Just decent.
BlinkyStark - 5/4/2014, 8:39 AM
Not surprised it open lower than Cap TWS

it is a pure cinematic horse crap like Man of Steel

Cap 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BlinkyStark - 5/4/2014, 8:39 AM
and im happy Cap 2 will finally out gross the garbage that is man of steel

a shame for all true superman fans
Chcl - 5/4/2014, 8:40 AM
@Scarilian

you're right!!!!

but TASM 2 doesn't deserve all the box office that will have!!!!! : / :/

CAP is better
yonny616 - 5/4/2014, 8:40 AM
@Crashrender Lol obvious troll bait.
BatzFTWfan - 5/4/2014, 8:42 AM
Cap's the best, finally a B-list superhero turns into an A-list alongside Thor, i hope Guardians rock the box-office and critics.
Lozzy - 5/4/2014, 8:43 AM
MURICA!!!!!
TheAbomination - 5/4/2014, 8:43 AM
Eat shit, Spidey. Cap is still the best CBM of the year so far.
driver - 5/4/2014, 8:45 AM
Spider-Man Did EAT SHIT! Movie Sucked Ass!

Made for dumbasses that will not question the stupid stuff(almost entire movie).
FastFlames - 5/4/2014, 8:47 AM
I've seen Cap 2 at the theaters four times, because it is just a really great film. This, I don't plan on seeing more than once,
FastFlames - 5/4/2014, 8:49 AM
@yonny616 obvious troll is obvious.
JoshWilding - 5/4/2014, 8:51 AM
Told you it all sucked weeks ago. :) Glad it's underperforming domestically, if not internationally...here's hoping it plummets during its second weekend before Godzilla and DOFP come along and completely decimate it.
blackandyellow - 5/4/2014, 8:54 AM
So I watched Cap 2 last night. Great movie. Solid 4.5/5 and my favorite MCU movie. I do have a few nitpicks with it.

1. Zola said BW was born in 1984, so she's 30. She said she was in the KGB but they dissolved in 1991.

2. Falcon was an Air Force PJ, but for some reason the Air Force kept their flying suits at Ft. Meade?

3. Why didn't anyone think to shoot at Cap's legs instead of directly at his shield? Especially the dude with the mini gun.

4. Are there no cops in DC? There were 2 massive shoot outs in the streets during the middle of the day and only 1 cop showed up and he was immediately blown up by the Winter Soldier.
charlie2094 - 5/4/2014, 8:56 AM
Not great numbers for Spidey, but still solid for sure. Enjoyed the film, but so many mistakes, better pick it up for TASM3

Spidey has been making less at the domestic ever since Spider-Man 1, TASM was the lowest yet, wouldn't be surprised if TASM2 is even lower. Did previously think this was a possible $1 Billion film, reckon around $750-$800 now
AlexanderLykins - 5/4/2014, 8:57 AM
This in now a Captain America thread.
charlie2094 - 5/4/2014, 8:58 AM
Great to see Cap at $679, deserves it success for sure! Should do $700 by the time it's completely finished
Prime - 5/4/2014, 8:58 AM
Take that Spidey.
blitzkreg - 5/4/2014, 8:58 AM
Like the first one, don't have any intention of seeing it in the theater. Don't get me wrong...I'm all for Superhero movies doing well...but I'm not going to contribute to a film that is sub-par...it pretty much got similar reviews the first film got, and I stayed away... catching the 1st one on dvd. It was ok, so I think I'll keep my cash in my pocket and wait for a better film to come out. Godzilla....I will be seeing in IMAX
Prime - 5/4/2014, 9:00 AM
Why the compare to MOS? Is this some kind of pissing contest?
Klone - 5/4/2014, 9:01 AM
This is what you get when you hire the writers that did Transformers 2 and Into Darkness.
CaptainAmerica31 - 5/4/2014, 9:02 AM
Sure 700,000 is good but Sony wants a BILLION! They want 1 BILLION! They're not getting it either cause it's do clear they don't give a [frick] about quality. They care about money. Wake up call for them hopefully.
ALegendaryPanda - 5/4/2014, 9:05 AM
I actually liked TASM 2, I'd give it a 7/10 it was a bit of a mess though.
ALegendaryPanda - 5/4/2014, 9:06 AM
The Rhino was atrocious though!
ALegendaryPanda - 5/4/2014, 9:08 AM
Dane Dehaan was a badass Harry/Goblin.
Spock0Clock - 5/4/2014, 9:08 AM
Nearly 400 million dollars and TASM2 hasn't yet broken even on its production and marketing budget. Sony wants to build a cinematic universe on a franchise that seems to actually doing worse in the box office with each sequel... it's madness.

If I were Bob Iger, I'd be on the phone with the CEO of Sony hashing out a deal. Put a billion dollars on the table and see if they'll walk away from that. Does anyone really think Sony would rather try to make 4 more movies on the outside chance that they can squeeze an average of 250 million out of each of them or just take a check now?

I'm not saying they'd definitely sell the rights back, or even that its smart business for Disney to try to buy them for that much. I'm just saying that Sony was expecting and hoping this franchise would grow significantly. With box office returns like this, Sony definitely has a price and that price has probably come down in the last month.
TruePunishment - 5/4/2014, 9:08 AM
Saw it Friday. Way too jarring, pacewise. Garfield does make a good Spiderman though. Looks like Spiderman 2 is still the best Spiderman movie.
