BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Hits $150M Overseas; Still Set For $95M US Debut

As expected, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still set to open in North America with $95 million this weekend, possibly even topping Captain America: The Winter Soldier as 2014's highest grossing movie. Meanwhile, the divisive sequel has already surpassed $150 million overseas!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has already earned $150 million overseas after two weeks of release in locations such as the UK and Japan. As was predicted several weeks ago, the sequel is expected to debut in North America this weekend with $95 million, a number which would top Captain America: The Winter Soldier's impressive opening. Studio insiders believe that the film will be a hit with families, but as always, it remains to be seen whether The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will exeed expectations or come in with a much lower number. In 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man earned $752.2 million worldwide, and the success of the sequel will obviously play a big role in Sony's plans for their own cinematic universe moving forwards. How much do you guys think the movie will open to this weekend?

Don't waste your money.
Ramiel - 4/30/2014, 4:37 PM
Seeing it tomorrow.
McNyagano - 4/30/2014, 4:38 PM
95 million? Isn't that the same as Cap 2?lol Spidey should be able to perform better than that.
YeezusWept - 4/30/2014, 4:39 PM

Why do you think Marvel created Miles Morales? ;)

I bought tickets for tomorrow evening's showing via a gift card, so I don't think it'll sting as much if it turns out as bad as I'm hearing.
JoJo1982 - 4/30/2014, 4:40 PM

I think mostly cause there is a
Ready another big superhero out right now too.....Cap TWS

It can be superhero overload at the box office for the GA
TheRationalNerd - 4/30/2014, 4:42 PM
I really enjoyed it. I want to see it again on the big screen though. Hoping to see a 3D review tomorrow or Friday...

"It's on again!"

Bekss - 4/30/2014, 4:43 PM
if you compare the numbers it is not doing better than ASM (almost the same numbers or even smaller) or TWS (less money in a lot of countries but more in counties like UK and Japan)
SuperCat - 4/30/2014, 4:44 PM
Lol @ DrDoom

Keep hearing its sh*t. Didn't care for the first one but I guess I have to kill the curiousity. Seeing it Friday.
Destined - 4/30/2014, 4:45 PM
@McNy Cap actually did 96.2 million.
McNyagano - 4/30/2014, 4:46 PM

But it's Spider-man bro. I loved the film even with all it's flaws, it improved the things that made me hate the first one in the first place but I feel that it's going to be this year's MOS. Either you love it or hate it.
Bekss - 4/30/2014, 4:48 PM
people is getting tired of Spidey
McNyagano - 4/30/2014, 4:48 PM

So Spidey is gonna open lower than a Captain America film? What?:o
staypuffed - 4/30/2014, 4:48 PM
Definitely a love or hate movie, like McNyagano said.
staypuffed - 4/30/2014, 4:49 PM
"people is getting tired of Spidey"
No, they're not.
SuperiorMrGod - 4/30/2014, 4:51 PM
Its a good movie. Don't listen to Doom.
ATrueHero1987 - 4/30/2014, 4:53 PM
Going to see this Saturday. I hope I like it.
Destined - 4/30/2014, 4:54 PM
@McNy it's definitely possible. That would be cray if it does. But I think Spidey might pull out higher than that.
JoJo1982 - 4/30/2014, 4:56 PM

Rather movie is good or not

Ppl I know personally saw a early screening said it's a fun movie
Then I've been hearing online from ppl saying it's bad

But u got 2 Big superheroes out the GA are going to choose one but spidey has more of a advantage since it's been out for a month now

I'm still thinking it will only make 90-100 million too this weekend
crushercreel23 - 4/30/2014, 5:00 PM

Bekss - 4/30/2014, 5:00 PM
I didn't mean that it won't make money, but the last movie was also kind of you like it or you hate it and this one is even more. They're losing audience and can't let that happen if they want a cinematic universe
HavocPrime - 4/30/2014, 5:00 PM
Kids go mad for Spider-Man and they will flock to see this no matter how bad it is.

Who knows how good this rebooted franchise could have been without Arad in control.
ThrotTheUnclean - 4/30/2014, 5:01 PM
How much money did Captain America: TWS make over-seas and how much did it make domestically?
JoJo1982 - 4/30/2014, 5:02 PM
I have faith that it'll make more than 100 million

This movie looks like a fun ride!!!
marvel72 - 4/30/2014, 5:03 PM
@ ATrueHero1987

its a good movie, some top notch spidey action, cheesy dialogue but no worse than the original spider-man trilogy, the soundtrack has its moments good & bad, good performances from garfield, stone & dehann. 3/5
Bekss - 4/30/2014, 5:05 PM
Is hard to tell because it opened in less countries, but I compared Country by country and ASM2 is making less money
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 4/30/2014, 5:06 PM
@crushercreel Bob Hoskins was a great actor.R.I.P.
Abary - 4/30/2014, 5:07 PM
Good to hear. We may not all agree on whether this is a good movie or not but we should all support out beloved CBMs.
MARVELPSYCHO79 - 4/30/2014, 5:09 PM
I will be seeing this next week.I want to judge this movie for myself.I hated TASM 1,and if I don't like this sequel,I'm done with Sony's Spidey movies.
HavocPrime - 4/30/2014, 5:10 PM
It is better than the first but it still suffers from some problems. Mainly their desperate attempt to set up a film universe with Oscorp at the centre, as it is getting really boring, and predictable knowing everything is coming from an evil corporation.

That and Harry felt rushed and forced to be the Goblin in the final act, as they couldn't have Electro do the deed as the comic fans would riot... on the internet.
remembertheking - 4/30/2014, 5:11 PM
this movie being bad.
dangermouse - 4/30/2014, 5:13 PM
It burns doesn't it Josh? that this film will most likely out gross TWS - despite your best efforts to put people off lol
MediaMan - 4/30/2014, 5:14 PM
I'd bet it'll go over $100 million this weekend. Of course, the question is, will it have staying power? Word of mouth will have a lot to do with that (as always). Good word of mouth helped TWS a great deal, IMHO.
Rpendo - 4/30/2014, 5:15 PM
The generally lousy-to-mediocre assessments the movie is getting on this site (and several others whose primary contributors are comic geeks) is not in any way indicative of how the general moviegoing public will feel about the film.

That being said, if the movie makes less than the first one, I have a hard time seeing Sony pushing forward with this massive Spider-verse they're attempting to create. The budget for this one is at or above 220 million, and while I'm sure Sony made a ton with promotional tie-ins up front, the movie is still going to have to make upwards of 530 million to even break even. This is not going to be a smash-hit moneymaker for the studio if it does less than 800. It will be a hit, probably, but won't get anywhere near the heights of the series. I can't see the general audience getting excited for tie-in films (well, maybe for Venom.) Sony needs to temper their expectations for the "expanded Spider-Verse." It's no MCU, it's not even a DCMU.
BenClark - 4/30/2014, 5:15 PM
These articles are spinning these numbers like they're good without knowing any better, but in the context of Spider-Man and what Sony was expecting/wanted, these numbers aren't good news for the future of the franchise.
crushercreel23 - 4/30/2014, 5:16 PM
All the backlash from this movie damn why couldn't it have been good
VIRILEMAN - 4/30/2014, 5:20 PM
But still better than Man of Steel.
