The answer is probably not, but maybe! After predictions of a $95 million opening weekend for the Marc Webb helmed sequel, analysts are now a little less clear on how well The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will perform. However, $90 million still looks likely. Hit the jump for details!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned around $37 million today (including the $8.7 million taken at late Thursday night showings) and now looks set for a three-day debut of $90 million. Other analysts are estimating a far more conservative $85 million, meaning that the Marc Webb helmed sequel WON'T beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier to take the title of 2014's highest opening movie. It could still happen, but that really depends on word of mouth and whether or not families flock to the see the kid-orientated Sony movie tomorrow as the studio are hoping. It's tricky to compare this opening with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man as that debuted early on a Tuesday ahead of the July 4th holiday weekened. Are you planning on seeing the movie this weekend? Do you hope it beats Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

Don't think it'll beat Cap but anything above $70 million is a success
Starkasm - 5/2/2014, 4:12 PM
Yep ^
grif - 5/2/2014, 4:15 PM
only way it will beat cap is by how bad it sucks.
Pasto - 5/2/2014, 4:15 PM
It wont beat Cap (At least I hope it wont).
McNyagano - 5/2/2014, 4:17 PM
If this fails to beat Cap then Spidey's in trouble. Being beaten out by 2nd tier characters? Come on, this shows how Marvel Stuios as elevated the genre by taking 2nd tier characters and turning them into pop culture icons. I mean Cap, Iron Man and Thor are at Spider-man popularity level at this point. That's a damn achievement in itself. Wow.
Abary - 5/2/2014, 4:17 PM
Way to go Cap, knock Spidey on his sticky ass!

McNyagano - 5/2/2014, 4:19 PM
Oh btw...

Steelers4190 - 5/2/2014, 4:29 PM
Loved this movie
Ramiel - 5/2/2014, 4:30 PM
Spidey should have a bigger Sat and Sun. Hopefully, it gets around $100M.
Visualiza - 5/2/2014, 4:32 PM
And that's $37 million more than it deserves to earn. Never thought I'd say this about a Spider-Man movie, but I hope WOM ensures that this movie crashes and burns. Astonishingly bad...I still can't wrap my head around it.
AlphaMasterFlex - 5/2/2014, 4:32 PM
I'll say it's the worst CBM of the past 4 years maybe below Ghost Rider:SOV.

Marvel is whooping garbages
Ramiel - 5/2/2014, 4:34 PM
Q: How is that Cap 2 made $36M on its first Friday and made $95M for weekend, yet Spidey made $37M on its first Friday, but it's predicted to do only $90M?
HurricaneXavier - 5/2/2014, 4:37 PM
The idiot trolls in this thread is impressive.
marvel72 - 5/2/2014, 4:40 PM

the amazing spider-man 2 the highest grossing comic book movie of 2014.

captain america the winter soldier the best comic book movie of 2014.
HughJasol - 5/2/2014, 4:40 PM
Just came back from watching it. What an awfully average movie. While it is not as bad as the RT score that it has so far, they aren't that far off. They need a better team to handle Spidey for part 3. Dissapointed!
Fornication - 5/2/2014, 4:41 PM
Is Marc Webb alergic to character development? I just saw the movie and, holy crap, he took 2 entire films to do something that was previously done in just one.

The plot is absurdly boring and uninteresting because Peter Parker in these films is a horrible character. They have managed to make Peter Parker, my favorite character and superhero become a terrible and boring character!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 isn't amazing and isn't Spider-Man either. Terrible villains, terrible plot and it is a film made for 13 year olds pseudo-nerds that are easily satisfied with nothing.

Spider-Man for a dumb audience. Congratulations, Sony. At least I had the decency to NOT watch the fist one on the theater and saved my money and dodged a huge bullet there. Now that I though they would learn from their mistakes and decided to give this franchise another shot, they do this crap.

It's better than the first movie, much better, but even shit like Iron Man 3 is still better than TASM so that's not saying much.
SpiderFraud - 5/2/2014, 4:41 PM
That Man of Steel RT score will always haunt not right.
m0th3r - 5/2/2014, 4:42 PM
Too soon to tell...but RT is dropping fast....
soforizo - 5/2/2014, 4:42 PM
Wasn't my kind of movie at all. It's definitely aimed at children and early teens (which isn't a criticism).
SuperCat - 5/2/2014, 4:43 PM
Good news for a CBM. But I'm still in Cap's corner.
FilmsFan - 5/2/2014, 4:44 PM
The fact that MOS made 116 million$ in the opening weekend & 128 after adding Thursday 7pm Speical WalMart screening; it's just lame to see THOR & CAP coming after AVENGERS & still can't get even close!
& now even SPIDEY!

This one is excepted to make same amount of money in US as GODZILLA & CAP 2 is gona beat it by a mile & SUPES by a SuperMile!
& still Sony is hell bent on making soooo many films so quicklyly & not understanding the fatigue is getting to people!
& they're not even bothered to make a 1 GOOD FILM; instead a making prequels for next film!
dethpillow - 5/2/2014, 4:44 PM
i'm totally down for this movie, even tho i'm a hardcore Spider-Man fan, but nevertheless, i'm excited about seeing it this weekend, but i gotta
that would be a black eye for Sony and the Spider-Man franchise to not beat Cap's opening weekend and May compared to April.

not that any of that means anything about the quality of either movie, i don't care about box office and Tomatoes when it comes to any of this, but it's still realistically, and just in the context of what it is, that is not a good thing for Sony to hear. i wonder where that pegs it for total box office. i'm surprised actually, i thought this movie would surprise more people and be better received generally. it still looks rad to me, it looks huge and strangely over the top in all the right ways, but I thought it would demolish it's opening week for pure hype on itself.

that'd be crazy to hear that Cap beat it. but if it does, way to go Cap, u deserve it.
TheAbomination - 5/2/2014, 4:44 PM
It might end up making more money than Cap, but it's still a shit movie.
UlisesMX - 5/2/2014, 4:44 PM
A few years ago would be ridiculous to think that a captain america movie could open better than a spidey film, now it's possible? Captain being a much better film.
Fornication - 5/2/2014, 4:45 PM
Webb thinks his style is more important than the character.

He took Peter Parker, threw him away and replaced him with his own made up character.
soforizo - 5/2/2014, 4:46 PM
Well it's certainly not the kind of movie to build an expanded universe from it.
HughJasol - 5/2/2014, 4:46 PM
2/5. It also didn't need to be so long. A lot of random unnecessary bs could've been cut.
AlexanderLykins - 5/2/2014, 4:47 PM
Won't get my money. Quite franly, it doesn't deserve it.
Klone - 5/2/2014, 4:48 PM
Stop blaming Webb for the horrible screenplay. He didn't like it either from what I can gather.
AlexanderLykins - 5/2/2014, 4:48 PM
Just waiting for that Guardians of the Galaxy trailer.
dethpillow - 5/2/2014, 4:49 PM
@FilmsFan - well a huge discrepancy like that with MOS between opening weekend earnings and total earnings, that's kind of a real black eye on a movie too. and like I said, I don't think this has anything to do with the quality of any movies, i really don't at all.

but it seems strange to crow like you are about MOS's opening weekend numbers when if that stuff actually means anything to u, they way it played out is more of a bitch slap on MOS than anything.

and again, i don't think box office has to do with quality. at all. but you're the one trying to insinuate that, and it's a funny model for you to choose if you're trying to make some kind of fake narrative for MOS's quality.

if it's a good movie, it's good, and there's plenty of reasons to say why, likewise for if it's bad, box office has exactly nothing to do with any of that, and neither does tomatoes and other websites or critical opinion in general. talk about the movies dude, don't talk about how big their fingernails are. u know? who cares. what does that mean? it only means what it means specifically.
Pasto - 5/2/2014, 4:49 PM
