James Franco's Review Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN? 'Meh'

James Franco's Review Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN? 'Meh'

What does Sam Raimi's Harry Osborn think about Marc Webb's reboot of the Spider-Man franchise? Not much. Continue on to listen to why Franco wasn't gung-ho about the film.

Said Franco, "Meh, they could've strayed a little bit more from the original. It's like...why. Guess they made a lot of money. Okay, congrats. But good for them. Sam and I moved on, we made Oz."

I believe Franco has just echoed a lot of Spider-Man fan sentiments. The sequel should fare much better, reception-wise, as there's less opportunity to tread in Raimi's footsteps now that Webb's story has moved beyond the origin.

Dane DeHaan better hope the Amazing Spider-Man sequel deviates more from Sam Raimi's trilogy or this is his future.

Running Time: 2 hrs 16 min
Release Date: July 3, 2012 (USA)
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone, Sally Field and Martin Sheen.
Directed by: Marc Webb
Written by: James Vanderbilt (initial screenplay),Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves (revised draft)

The Amazing Spider-Man is an American superhero film directed by Marc Webb, based on the comic book of the same name and starring Andrew Garfield as the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the film series that stars the superhero. The cast includes Garfield as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school.

The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Filming started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011.

Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, 2 theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities and a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay.

Franco was terrible as Harry. Dane Deehan will do a better job. And I still enjoyed TASM, flaws and all, more than Raimis entire trilogy.
AmazingFantasy - 1/25/2013, 1:17 PM
Why the [frick] would they stay " more to the original?"

He wasnt going to say.
" I loved it, so much better than my films and the series will destroy mine later on"
Nick56 - 1/25/2013, 1:24 PM
TASM was a pathetic piece of shit. I was fine with them rebooting it but its like they didn't even try to make it better than the original
CavEl - 1/25/2013, 1:25 PM
The Amazing Spider-Man is a bad movie.

Instead of blindly protecting it and allowing Marc Webb to make another one that will be just as bad as the first, you should be angry and be calling for Webb's job.

He made Peter Parker into a douchbag, when Singer made Superman into a creeper I was one of the few (along with LP4 and a few others on this site) who was outraged and wanted Singer fired and a reboot of the Superman franchise. Now we're getting what looks like it might be a movie that doesn't suck like Superman Returns.

CavEl - 1/25/2013, 1:30 PM
The excuse that Peter Parker is a kid and so that means he gets a get out of jail free card for being a douchbag is bullshit. Worst of all, Webb didn't even give hint at Peter will stop being a douchebag in the second movie. In fact, he made him MORE of a douchebag.

Your dad's dying wish is for me to stay away from you so that I can protect you, but [frick] it, I'm going to break the promise I made to him. Aren't I romantic?

I BOOED when that happened in the movie theater.
mk - 1/25/2013, 1:34 PM
It was meh
ManofSteel23 - 1/25/2013, 1:34 PM
I think the practical effects web slinging didnt do alot for the film, and ALL! (apart from one where he first tries his webshooters) of the web slinging scenes where at night! and I dont think there was any way to reboot spiderman without redoing the first, just to build story and stuff, but I will forget about this one when the second one comes out and it can be its own movie without being criticized
Reasonnnn - 1/25/2013, 1:37 PM
TASM was so underwhelming. Raimi's first two Spider-Man films had the heart and understood Parker at his core. *Looks at the ending of Spider-Man*
DioFoRio - 1/25/2013, 1:41 PM
that was more of a "Ehhhhhh" than a "meh"
MisterJay - 1/25/2013, 1:42 PM
tas2 will be the best comicbook movie ever...
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/25/2013, 1:43 PM
Meh, they could've strayed a little bit more from the original. It's like...why. Guess they made a lot of money. Okay, congrats. But good for them. Sam and I moved on, we made Oz.

i love you sexy franco.
CaptainObvious - 1/25/2013, 1:43 PM
The moral of TASM is if you have the opportunity to avoid responsibility and take the easy way out, then do so even if it has horrible consequences for yourself and others in the future.
DrHorrible - 1/25/2013, 1:45 PM
Never cared for Franco as Harry, or as an "actor" in general, so his opinion means little to nothing to me.
DioFoRio - 1/25/2013, 1:46 PM
I haven't watched it again. The problem with rebooting these flicks is the same problem in a video game where in the last installment you had all these powers but now we strip them from you in order to get them back. In video games it's not as bad because you are in the story progressing it...but for these flicks it's like" come on already we already know yer fuggn story, get on with it" or maybe I'm just reeeeeealy high right now and it made more sense to me.
ATrueHero1987 - 1/25/2013, 1:46 PM
IDK why Sony and the producers felt they had to start over. Well MAYBE because the 3rd one wasn't received well and the 4th one didn't sound promising. At times, I felt like TASM was just the extended version of the first one. I still think TASM is good but Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man movie.
DioFoRio - 1/25/2013, 1:48 PM
I just hope when they reboot Spider-MAN..we get a man in the suit and not these high school dramas. I'd rather watch petey struggle with his mortgage and adult relationships than this shit. It was cool the first time..but can we move on?
SpideyQuad - 1/25/2013, 1:48 PM
I don't blame webb as much as that hack Avi Arad. He claims to know Spiderman, but he doesn't know anything. He is just a leech.
cyclopstb - 1/25/2013, 1:48 PM
I agree withe Franco.
DioFoRio - 1/25/2013, 1:51 PM
that Tim And Eric yoss?
gambgel - 1/25/2013, 1:51 PM
I like James.... but meh? seriously? mmm

I sense a bit of envy or something there.

the movie had a better tone and direction than the original trilogy (appart from Spiderman 2, in any case)

Just the scenes betweent Peter and Gwen were superior than S1.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/25/2013, 1:51 PM
dang dion get outta my head, like you reading my damn mind :P

duncboy - 1/25/2013, 1:51 PM
@KaineParker - STRAY, not stay.
venomvsspidey11 - 1/25/2013, 1:52 PM
TASM sucked ass, Unlike Raimi who grew up with Spider-Man Webb has no real love for the character and doesn't give a shit if he changes him to fit his story.
webheaded - 1/25/2013, 1:52 PM
I swear, ever since TASM was announced, everyone and their mother just all of a sudden hate the Raimi trilogy. Why? There's no denying that the first two are just solid good movies, the 2nd especially. So what if EVERYTHING isn't like the comics? Some things were adjusted well, in my opinion.
Man, this is why I hate forums... You guys make me so cynical.
CaptainObvious - 1/25/2013, 1:53 PM
@Dionysios- Probably not because Marvel and the producers think that adult life is boring and adult situations can't make for good drama. I too am sick of these Spider-Man stories taking place while Peter is in high school and I'm especially tired of stories where Peter is an adult who acts like he is 16.
JMESS - 1/25/2013, 1:54 PM
the guy never even picked up a comic or read spidey before he played Harry so really why would anyone on here give a [frick] what he has to say?
DioFoRio - 1/25/2013, 1:55 PM
Looks like that coupon expired Yoss.
poop23 - 1/25/2013, 1:57 PM
Anyone who thinks Franco is a terrible actor clearly doesn't know anything about acting.
And if someone thinks he did terrible as Harry, then they're just trying way to hard to hate the original spiderman series
TheLokey1 - 1/25/2013, 1:57 PM
Yeah TASM could have been better, Oz looks like shit though
Platinum - 1/25/2013, 1:58 PM
Smart guy James Franco, He was great as Harry.
DioFoRio - 1/25/2013, 1:58 PM
@Capt...for real. Shit's not that bad in high school

@JMESS..the whole "the actor needs to have read comics" thing is a lame argument. It's gotten to the point that all the nerds rage is satiated by actors now saying"I grew up with this and blah blah blah. Just act you fuggn monkeys.
Goggles - 1/25/2013, 1:59 PM

Yep, Raimi really loves Spider-Man. That's why he gave us Spider-Man 3.
venomvsspidey11 - 1/25/2013, 2:05 PM
@Goggles Seriously? Do some research that was all Sony.
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 2:07 PM
@LEVITIKUZ Sorry but how do you know what the 2nd one is going to go like? Because they haven't even started shooting yet. It might be one of the best CBM's ever, it might be the worst, we don't know. What it has got in it's favour is a great cast, new writers and hindsight. But you can't judge a movie a year and a half before it comes out.

@PatriotsSuperguy You have previously said that you felt sorry for the car robber and Peter was just being a dick. What? First off he's a car robber and a criminal, the scum of the earth, he was robbing a car that looked expensive and somebody probably worked they're ass of to pay (within the confinds of the movie). And secondly he was carrying a knife, which means he was willing to either kill or seriously injure someone who might of tried to stop him.
DVonShakari - 1/25/2013, 2:11 PM
I think Paramount gave us Spider-Man 3 more than Raimi ever did. Franco's a great actor and I kind of side with his opinion. It was a reboot and it was definitely going to have a lot of the same origin elements, no doubt. So they tried their best to sway from the original trilogy by making it "grounded", "realistic", and focusing on Peter being, not just a so called geek, but anti-social, bitter, shy, and withdrawn. "Hey, lets giver Peter a skateboard! Let's focus on the tensions at home between his adoptive family." They did what they felt best to separate the two trilogies.
GodzillaKart - 1/25/2013, 2:12 PM
It's funny. We see these people interviewed and many times the general response is "That guys is a class act". Other times it's "Hmmm. Seems like a petty douchebag".

Regardless of what you thought of Webb's remake, I think it is safe to say that Franco falls squarely in the second category.

Go get another MFA in Ego, Jim.
AutobotCommander84 - 1/25/2013, 2:13 PM
I've honestly stopped giving a [frick] about what people think about TASM. The people on this site are already biased, not even pointing out the various plot holes in TDKR yet still giving it a glowing review. So why bother? I thought that it was a great superhero movie and an even better Spider-Man movie. And to all you people saying that you've already seen Spider-Man in high school before in a movie, I don't see why 10 minutes of high-school stuff should count as anything in my opinion. Spidey in high-school can be just as interesting as Spidey as an adult if not even better. And while I respect James Franco as an actor, I certainly can't agree with him.
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 2:14 PM
I can see where Franco is coming from. From a story standpoint TASM is weak. But I like it because of the characterisation's, and the performances. I do have my issues with it though, like the lizard being rushed and not very compelling, and Peter being unlikeable in many places I.e. when he forgot the eggs and was being nasty to aunt may
marvel72 - 1/25/2013, 2:15 PM
spider-man & spider-man 2 are both better than the amazing spider-man.

i rate the amazing spider-man the same as spider-man 3,both had their moments but nothing special.
DVonShakari - 1/25/2013, 2:15 PM
I still never understood How Gwen in TASM was a high school student with a security clearance and access to all that stuff in a highly supervised and secure science lab. And who dresses like that in a science lab? Really? It's surprising Peter wasn't an intern. Maybe she's smarter than him. She would have to be incredibly intelligent to be a high school intern with no college intern as her superior or to make sure she doesn't do anything foolish. Why was she even in high school if she was that smart?
