THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Alternate Designs For Peter Parker's Web-Shooters

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Alternate Designs For Peter Parker's Web-Shooters

One of the most dramatic changes that director Marc Webb made from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man universe, was having Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) create mechanical web-shooters. Hit the jump to check out some alternate web-shooters created by Ron Mendell.

One of the things that I enjoyed about The Amazing Spider-Man was that director, Marc Webb, decided to have Peter Parker create mechanical web-shooters. As you'll remember, in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man universe Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) produced webbing organically, a result of his mutated biology. That never sat well with me, as the mechanical web-shooters were always a great way of showing Peter's scientific aptitude, and his inventive nature.

“I had a meeting with Stan Lee and we talked about the web-shooters. I was curious about the incarnation of them [because] of course in the previous films [they went away from them] and we wanted to reestablish ourselves. That was one thing but the other thing was the fact that the web-shooters were able to dramatize Peter’s intellect and I thought that was really cool. ... It was in the comics and we have a different design but it’s a cool element to have. It’s not something we over-use or over-exploit. To me, it’s something I remember from when I was a kid and thinking ‘It would be cool if I could build those.’” - Marc Webb

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. The film will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, and Jamie Foxx is Electro. The Amazing Spider-Man sequel will swing into theaters May 2, 2014.

amazing spiderman did nothing with the character except had him try to get laid for 90 minutes. It was a terrible movie.
BboiBlack - 2/12/2013, 7:36 PM
Without internal dialogue it amounts to nothing. When will they learn.

At least with Tony Stark he talks not only to himself but to his AI computer.

I feel like if you're presenting news, you should give an unbiased view. Save your opinions for the comments section.
DioFoRio - 2/12/2013, 7:54 PM
so does he even make the stuff or is it from OSCORP?
FireKnightRises - 2/12/2013, 8:05 PM
Alternate Designs here are better than what they're have in movie

He bought the web fluid from oscorp
Paragon79 - 2/12/2013, 8:11 PM
Spidex3000: That's not true. Plenty of journalist use their articles to push their views. And those ones are generally only liked by peopenwhomshare their view. unbiased reporters and journalists are the way to go.
CaptainAmerica31 - 2/12/2013, 8:12 PM
A journalist is suppose to be unbiased, that's their jobs. Don't know if Nailbaiter considers himself a journalist, if he does he might want to reconsider imputing his opinion on the article.
DioFoRio - 2/12/2013, 8:16 PM
@DKR...that's what I thought... makes me wonder if he has to keep stealing it then?
TheDude - 2/12/2013, 8:22 PM
Yeah, when I first heard about the mechanical web shooters I was hoping for a cartridge change in mid-air. Always liked that aspect of the cartoon.
MrReese - 2/12/2013, 8:29 PM
[frick] those shooters! my father bought me better ones

IIIAdamantiumIII - 2/12/2013, 8:34 PM
He punked a box of the webbing from oscorp ... I'm sure by the second film he will have perfected his own recipe ;)

I have a feeling with the second film it will really jump into the iconic spider-man world. Where Peter is really in his element and has been spider-man for awhile
AmazingFantasy - 2/12/2013, 8:50 PM
He will clearly make better web shooters with a stronger and perfected Oscorp webbing, to go with his new suit.
BrowniesExplode - 2/12/2013, 9:04 PM
He actually ran out of web in the film when he was in the sewer with the lizard
TheDude - 2/12/2013, 9:07 PM
Really? When, I remember him trying to shoot them off underwater, but of course that wouldn't work.
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/12/2013, 9:15 PM
I finally watch his take on the movie and he did have a good approach for the web shooters. It's nice that he showed Peter is this smart teenager that is capable of inventing things and solve some scientic formulas. That's what's so cool about Peter Parker, but Peter Parker was annoying as a person but it is really cool that him and flash are buds in the end. They are probably pit against each other for a possible venom since this spiderman is not like the original.

It is also cool the way he used his webbing in the swears and how he connected his camera as well. That is the concept I wish they brought it in the rami spiderman. IMO I still like raimi's spiderman over Marc webb as a story wise and some casting. Raimi had a better aunt may and uncle Ben. Two of the villans in the first spiderman were great. Toby's Peter Parker was great but his spiderman sucked compared to andrew's. Overall I want to see what they can bring in the next but like the amazing spiderman I have no expectation and after watching it recently I still have no high expectations.
Jollem - 2/12/2013, 9:51 PM
the webs looked really friggin' cool!

@The111thBiterofNails - i like the fact that you throw in your two cents from time to time. it's not like you're actually declaring fact or anything. and in nailbiter speak i'm assuming "few positives" = "new things" :)
Platinum - 2/12/2013, 9:54 PM
Web shooters were so badly executed, he basically pulled them out his ass. Doesn't make him look any smarter just makes the film look that much lazier.

The web shooters could've done without the useless mini radar in the middle though, it looks way too flashy.
superotherside - 2/12/2013, 10:22 PM
I liked the web shooters in the film, although ultimately half way though the film for some reason I felt it was rather rushed and not as good as the first part. Maybe the sequel will be better. Doubt we'll get a proper Spider-man though until Marvel Studios has him back.
mkilban2 - 2/12/2013, 10:36 PM
I like the personal input Nail, screw these other guys and their hate!
TayDee - 2/12/2013, 10:36 PM
nailbiter111 - yeah i know, but if they use it too many times, it'll lose its effect.
Jollem - 2/12/2013, 10:44 PM
i'm curious as to how the marvel studios production company would produce and financially fund a more proper spider-man movie?
Platinum - 2/12/2013, 11:11 PM
^After the atrocity that is Ultimate Spider-Man, I've lost a lot of trust in marvel for a proper Spider-Man. It's like their stuck in a cycle where all their movies and shows have to be promo material for something else.
Durf - 2/12/2013, 11:17 PM
Ok I like these some of these designs better than what they used in the movie. Why didn't they use them? Oh, right they didn't have a pointless red flashing light every [frick]ing time he shot a web line out. Ok, i get it now...
NeoBaggins - 2/12/2013, 11:21 PM
Fanboys bricked their nickers about some homemade webb shooters that had no effect on the character whatsoever. At least the cartoon would put Spider-man in situations where running out of webbing was crucial. He only has webb shooters here for the sake of having them, for the sake of the pretentious reaction they received.
CaptainProg - 2/12/2013, 11:39 PM
Terrible movie! It needs another reboot this Spider-Man guy.
mgeoff88 - 2/13/2013, 12:11 AM
I really like the mechanical web-shooters. I'm glad Marc Webb implemented them in his take on Spider-Man.
Jollem - 2/13/2013, 12:18 AM
@SpectacularSpider - i'm not gonna speak on ultimate spider-man 'cause i've never seen the show. i've liked most of the spidey-stuff so far. yeah, i get what you're saying about marvel making things to hype another thing. they do this a lot. especially with their avengers revenue stream

@NeoBaggins - i think the effect they had was that it was one part of showing peter's intellect. that's always good

the running out of webbing while swinging gag was used in spider-man 2. so, i think they instead went with a neat part where it showed spidey using them underwater to a similar and more dangerous effect.(i can just imagine how haters would also be chanting "raimi did it first" :)

they also used them in a way where at one point he had no ability to sling webs at all which created a new dynamic in a fight scene

also, he actually has web-shooters in the comic. comic-accuracy is a hot-button issue around here and is much preferred from what i gather :)
jimoakley666 - 2/13/2013, 2:50 AM
I love the fact that he built them from watches and other bits. I also loved how they are digital and are programmed by hooking them up to his computer. I thought the whole approach to the web-shooters in this movie was 100% spot on.
jimoakley666 - 2/13/2013, 2:53 AM
I think they nay-sayers are forgetting that he actually WAS left without his web-shooters at the end of the movie. Lizard crushed his wrists, breaking the web-shooters, leaving Peter on top of a skyscraper with a collapsing roof and no way of saving himself except to jump and hope for the best.
christianroch - 2/13/2013, 3:55 AM
I still prefer organic webbing with Sam Raimi's version.
AmazingFantasy - 2/13/2013, 4:17 AM
The sewer. No webbing, where the [frick] is he going to go?

Final batttle. Peter would have fallen of the building and with no webbing to attach to the building, most likely would have fallen to his "death" becuasethey were broken by the Lizard ( finally see a villain do that)

Crane swign. Webbing doesnt go on for miles, it has a point where it cant shoot any futher. Realstic.
AC1 - 2/13/2013, 6:21 AM
I really like the web-shooters. I originally thought the organic ones would be better and more convenient (story wise), but TASM really turned me around, because it does show Peter's intelligence and also adds an extra level of threat in that he can run out of webbing at any given time - and they were right not to use that plot-point in the first movie, because it's not the sort of thing you should use over and over again through the series, so I'm glad they saved it for a future movie (plus we got different versions of it in this movie, like the webs not working under water, and Lizard breaking the shooters in the finale).

As for the webbing, the way I see it, although it's never made clear in the movie, is that Peter bases his own formula on the bio-cable he steals from Oscorp. It's a bit of a stretch, but basically it's because he tells that criminal that it's webbing he developed ("Webbing that I developed myself, I dont think you really wanna know the details...") yet we see him steal those cartridges. In the video he watches online, the bio-cable has a metallic quality, so I'm guessing he adapts Oscorp's bio-cable into his own webbing. In fact, he may have just stolen empty cartridges to store his own webbing (plus, he may have needed the cartridges so he could build his webshooters around them).

Anyway, I like the webshooters we got in the movie. If I remember correctly, the lights are actually there to show the current status of the webshooters - the red light is there to show that the web-cartridge is loaded properly, while the green bar on the side shows the strength setting of the web or something (to web-swing it needs to be on a stronger setting to shoot the web further, but if it were on that setting when Spidey shot a web at someone it could injure them so he'd put it at a lower setting during combat).
Canon38 - 2/13/2013, 6:24 AM
Raimi's Spiderman was more enjoyable. (Except # of course)
Odin - 2/13/2013, 6:44 AM
@BossWalsh- Yeah, keep wishing.
drcomicbook - 2/13/2013, 7:36 AM
no he did run out when he was swinging towards oscorp he ran out
IIIAdamantiumIII - 2/13/2013, 7:39 AM
@MCUFan1 - actually the lizard crushed the web shooters ....
