UPDATE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 - What Are The Critics Saying?

UPDATE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 - What Are The Critics Saying?

We've seen the Twitter reactions, but now the first wave of reviews for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have found their way online. Stay tuned, as we'll continue to update this post with more as they come in! For now, hit the jump to see what the first full-length verdict on the Marc Webb helmed is...

We all know Spider-Man can multitask – those wrist-mounted gizmos fling out the sticky stuff every which way. But can his director? Marc Webb, returning after the last instalment, again shows a better feel for the relationships than he does for juggling all the overlapping story elements. At times, with its many villains, this one veers perilously close to the overplotted trouble zone of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises: a case of too many crooks spoiling the broth. [3*]

But there's so much more wrong with the film, including some stuff that gets into spoiler-y territory that we won't discuss here. We went into "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" hoping that it would take what worked about the first film and run with it. We left thinking that, if it continues on this downwards curve, we'd avoid future Spider-films like the plague. [D]

Though there are inevitably a few plot inconsistencies and moments where you’re left to scratch your head, seeing as this film is about a man dressed up as a spider, saving people from a scary blue man with electronic powers, you can forgive its fantastical, surrealistic approach. By playing up to such a tone, it makes for a film that’s inherently good fun and a more than worthy trip to the cinema. Ultimately, that’s what truly matters where blockbusters are concerned – making this particular picture something of a success. [4*]

Despite the uneven nature of the whole endeavour, praise needs to go to Garfield for holding it all together. He's more at ease in the role than Tobey Maguire ever was, and manages to nail the big moments when called upon. He's an absolute revelation as this character. Peter's past, present and future all intertwine in a sequel that offers bang for your buck but with all that said, you can't help feel the franchise bean counters at work here thanks to all the ominous foreshadowing and unresolved character arcs. Too many cooks and all that... [3*]

Huh. So....

What does this mean?
Pasto - 4/8/2014, 2:44 PM
Double rainbow oh my god.
McNyagano - 4/8/2014, 2:47 PM
Well I'm now gonna put up my review. Josh are you gonna be at the premier?
JordanKing - 4/8/2014, 2:50 PM
Oh this should be goood..

(Hail Hydra)
JoshWilding - 4/8/2014, 2:56 PM
McNyagano: No, I could have seen the movie tonight and interviewed Webb/Tolmach/Arad on Thursday, but I decided not to. Saving up to go to WrestleMania next year, and even as a die-hard Spidey fan, I just don't care about this movie!
McNyagano - 4/8/2014, 2:58 PM

So since critics are reviewing the film, it's safe for me to put up my review? Saw it back in March:)
MrSotoMan - 4/8/2014, 2:58 PM
Well The Telegraph has a mixed opinion.
merrillmind - 4/8/2014, 3:00 PM
Just so everyone knows the Telegraph also gave The Winter Soldier 3 out of 5 stars so I wouldn't necessarily be to putt off by this review.
ezio619 - 4/8/2014, 3:01 PM
TheDarman - 4/8/2014, 3:01 PM
Do it McNyagano! (And send me the twist you were talking about!) :)
batcheeks8 - 4/8/2014, 3:06 PM
Spider-man 3, saw that coming...
CaptainObvious - 4/8/2014, 3:06 PM
There probably is a post-credit scene, but it may have been cut out to prevent any details from leaking early.
Mrcool210 - 4/8/2014, 3:06 PM
@TheAmbassador critics screenings never have after credits scenes, avengers didn't either. Besides, if they don't have an after credits scene thats good, then that means they didn't put it in the trailers
Pasto - 4/8/2014, 3:07 PM
Someone deleted my article about The Goonies getting a sequel!

JoshWilding - 4/8/2014, 3:07 PM
McNyagano: Go for it! :)
SpiderFraud - 4/8/2014, 3:10 PM
Suicide it is!
ALmazing - 4/8/2014, 3:10 PM
"At times, with its many villains, this one veers perilously close to the overplotted trouble zone of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises: a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth."

Nathan Fillion gif

That's disappointing, and yet I kind of expected it.
arsonjack - 4/8/2014, 3:12 PM
Crap movie and actors
TheDuck - 4/8/2014, 3:13 PM
You know who wrote this review?

BTW Hail Hydra
Prime - 4/8/2014, 3:14 PM
So it's ok?

"he looks like the love child of Dr Manhattan from Watchmen and Mr Freeze from Batman and Robin"
Sounds like someone who gave up on this film before seeing it, i don't trust it. Besides The "Telegraph Journal" is the same thing pretty much in my hometown, they even hated Toy Story 3. The heartless bastards
SuperCat - 4/8/2014, 3:15 PM
I blame Hydra. Sneaky bastards.
ckal - 4/8/2014, 3:15 PM
"The effects team must turn Foxx a luminous electric blue and only half succeed – he looks like the love child of Dr Manhattan from Watchmen and Mr Freeze from Batman and Robin."

It's true.
grif - 4/8/2014, 3:15 PM
i liked all of the tweets that said it sucked. i trust those
QuestionDAnswer - 4/8/2014, 3:16 PM
Who the f*ck is Hydra? Are they supposed to be like the League of Shadows or something?
OneBadDay - 4/8/2014, 3:17 PM
^You're kidding right?
Highflyer - 4/8/2014, 3:18 PM
The fact that this review went to talk about electo's look and use the whole Dr. Manhattan dig makes me disregard the review.
soforizo - 4/8/2014, 3:18 PM
So same score they gave Capt 2.
Mego - 4/8/2014, 3:21 PM
Its getting a lot of negative feedback from casual people.
soforizo - 4/8/2014, 3:22 PM
Telegraph doesn't have the greatest track record with their reviews. Any other reviews out?
Batman52 - 4/8/2014, 3:22 PM
I say this reviewer...

cause this the same dude that gave Cap 2 a 3 out of 5, So I'm gonna watch it for my damn self.
CaptainAmerica31 - 4/8/2014, 3:22 PM
Why do these guys give so many 3 stars, oh well at least it's somewhat good right!
DoubleD - 4/8/2014, 3:22 PM
Gwen dies
RamonSuarez - 4/8/2014, 3:23 PM
Hmmmm....I've been thinking what if Harry isn't Norman's son, but his clone.
CaptainAmerica31 - 4/8/2014, 3:24 PM
If he gave captain a 3 star then I'm for sure looking for someone else's review although I'm glad it's not a two star. Idc I got my MURICA the winter soldier to look forward to again
TheRealRemyLebeau - 4/8/2014, 3:26 PM
Yeah I don't believe this review or take the person serious. This doesn't even read like a professional. It reads like a hater on this site. Uncover hydra cell. Don't trust anyone. Hail Hydra ;p
Jhuntdaprodigy - 4/8/2014, 3:26 PM
Well some of those tweets we saw in the previous post and this review aren't really doing my expectations for this film any favors. Still, tweets from a bunch of random people, possibly not even comic book fans, and one review from a website that also gave TWS only 3 stars isn't much to go on. My attitude has always been that I'll just see for myself. I heard what the critics said about MOS, saw it, and enjoyed it. I'm not really expecting this to be the Dark Knight equivalent of Spidey films, but I still maintain a little bit of hope it will be good.
Indy - 4/8/2014, 3:27 PM
I am not going to trust this one.
cmay13 - 4/8/2014, 3:27 PM
The guy from the playlist tweeted "AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2: Terrible. Not so much a movie as a bunch of scenes, almost none of which are any good."
