The immensely talented Jerad S. Marantz, just gave me the heads up that he's posted a few more pieces from his work on Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man. A while back I got the chance to speak with him about his work and he teased that he was working on concept art for a Marvel film and #TASM was apparently that project. He's currently working on concept art for a few more comic book movies that would make all of you green with envy. Speaking of green, maybe I'll ask him soon if he's started on any concept art for Green Goblin?

The Amazing Spider-Man is an American superhero film directed by Marc Webb, based on the comic book of the same name and starring Andrew Garfield as the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the film series that stars the superhero. The cast includes Garfield as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school.

The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Filming started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011.

Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, 2 theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities and a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay.

I'm fine with how the lizard looks in the movie.
but WHY are the alternate designs ALWAYS better then the endresult!!

Spidey91 - 7/5/2012, 1:19 PM
the last one would have been perfect
TyJenn610 - 7/5/2012, 1:19 PM
The first and last ones actually aren't that bad. The first one looks kinda like a velociraptor and the last one is more of a hulking monster type. The one they went with looked significantly better in motion on screen than it did in any of the promo photos I saw, but I still left the theater wanting something a bit more lizard-like.
DanteSparda - 7/5/2012, 1:28 PM
What @Spidey91 said, the last one kick ass!! Also the second isn't bad at all.
GreenHalJordan - 7/5/2012, 1:41 PM
The last one would have been the perfect choice.
BattlinMurdock - 7/5/2012, 2:17 PM
Would have preferred this Spidey outfit:

And this Lizard design:
chujong - 7/5/2012, 2:17 PM

ALegendaryPanda - 7/5/2012, 2:26 PM
The first and last ones are so badass
CrazyKeaton - 7/5/2012, 2:27 PM
the CGI on the lizard was just terrible in the movie
Ha1frican - 7/5/2012, 2:28 PM
These are all way better... i feel like Rys Ifans just pushed for more of his face so it would be "his performace" and blah blah blah
kisama - 7/5/2012, 2:29 PM
Photobucket
Joker08 - 7/5/2012, 2:29 PM
#3 looks like Zbigniew Brzezinski:
Ha1frican - 7/5/2012, 2:29 PM
CrazyKeaton ?? the cgi was awesome i didn't like the design but what they went with looked really good as far as looking real
Verdugo - 7/5/2012, 2:29 PM
I like the third and the first. I lake em way more that the one they chose for the movie.
Spidey31 - 7/5/2012, 2:37 PM
1st and last would be perfect, third would be the most realistic. The one in the movie looked the best with the lab coat
marvel72 - 7/5/2012, 2:58 PM
the 1st & 5th pictures look great, should of used one of them.
MadJakHatesSpinoffs - 7/5/2012, 3:04 PM
I liked the 1st, 2nd and 5th. At least he had a snout.
TrueRedBlue - 7/5/2012, 3:05 PM
Even though Lizard turned out well in the film, the last one is AWESOME!
KingEmperor - 7/5/2012, 3:06 PM
The last one looks great.
McGribble - 7/5/2012, 3:16 PM
I like the last one but it reminds me a bit of Cloverfield.
BuckyCap - 7/5/2012, 3:23 PM
Any of these would've been better than what they chose.
GUNSMITH - 7/5/2012, 3:24 PM
THE END LIZARD DID JUST FINE..

I PREFER THIS CONCEPT OVER THE LAST ONE, THE END ONE IS SOMEWHAT CLOSE BUT I CAN SEE WHERE THEY TRIED TO GET THE DESIGN THAT EMOTED IFANS THE MOST..

IF YOU WENT WITH THE LAST DESIGN IT WOULD JUST BE A STRAIGHT UP HULKING BEAST.
BackwardGalaxy - 7/5/2012, 3:29 PM
So the snout was never in the equation.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 7/5/2012, 3:34 PM
Last one is perfeeeect wth were they thinkingggg?!
OhGawDuhhh - 7/5/2012, 3:51 PM
I wish he had a snout and a labcoat on more.

Funny thing is.. This movie has wise-cracking Spidey in high school, dating Gwen Stacy first and had the Lizard snoutless and in a trench coat just like in the comics.. yet.. I feel like the Sam Raimi Trilogy had the HEART and SOUL of Spidey. Does that make sense?

That's solely my opinion, by the way.
Gman20 - 7/5/2012, 3:53 PM

Woah that looks like Voldermort a bit no ?
TheWebSlinger - 7/5/2012, 3:58 PM
Wow, the last one is the best out of all designs, even the final one.
themayer88 - 7/5/2012, 4:10 PM
Danm some of those are scary!
SuspenseSmith - 7/5/2012, 4:21 PM
I liked the look. I just thought the lighting/reflection of the scales could have better to make it look less CGI.

The motion capture animation worked well.
SuspenseSmith - 7/5/2012, 4:30 PM

I respectfully disagree. I felt this had more of the heart and soul of Spider-Man intact while Raimi had the look down better. I think Parker's personality in this came out as how I always felt he was, with a bit of a modern update.

I loved the crane scene, the uses of the webbing, the web shooters, the emotional impact of the deaths of Ben and Captain Stacy, his turnaround friendship with Flash, and his epiphany of what a hero is were all tremendously accurate to the core of Spider-Man while approaching it with a realistic progression. Not realistic in a sense of scientific explanations, but in the sense that nothing felt contrived.

It felt like Peter's character became more flesh and blood than pen and ink, which is what a movie should do for a comic book character. Raimi's Spider-Man was the comic book character untranslated into real life person terms. Webb's version took the comic book and translated it into real emotions, natural human progressions, and believable motivations and relationships.

Raimi is better at serving fan fair and pulp, like Army of Darkness.
Webb is better at breathing realistic humanity into a movie, like 500 Days of Summer.
SuspenseSmith - 7/5/2012, 4:33 PM
Raimi's movies felt straight from the page a lot of the times. But straight from the page doesn't always work. Imagine if Thor was straight from the page, or any of the original comics... ahhh!

Eddie Brock's transformation was nearly panel to panel from the comic. Doesn't mean anything.

It's an ADAPTATION, not a READ-ALONG COMIC.

nvision - 7/5/2012, 4:38 PM
Seen the movie yesterday it was good only because of what others have been complaining about which was the first hour about doing the origin which I though was done very well it had a good story development and took you on a motional ride. Other than that the last 40 minutes where not great I actually think that the Lizard was not compelling at all they really failed on the villian big time if it wasn't for origin arc for Peter parker and the emotional layers that the story adds to this movie this movie would've been a bust.

Is it just me or did the lizard look pretty bad with the whole cgi and it did not look real at all. Maybe just me but the cgi looks like it was made a decade ago.

6.5/10

"Funny thing is.. This movie has wise-cracking Spidey in high school, dating Gwen Stacy first and had the Lizard snoutless and in a trench coat just like in the comics.. yet.. I feel like the Sam Raimi Trilogy had the HEART and SOUL of Spidey. Does that make sense?"

It does to me.

SageMode - 7/5/2012, 4:42 PM
The last one would've been ALOT better
Ha1frican - 7/5/2012, 4:43 PM
SuspenseSmith in look maybe but it was a rape of the characters and.story
Ha1frican - 7/5/2012, 4:45 PM
@OptimisticPrime I felt that way a little but I think it was just the score of the first trilogy was so amazing it evoked more emotion
mgeoff88 - 7/5/2012, 4:48 PM
The last one would have been perfect IMO.
GLprime2814 - 7/5/2012, 4:57 PM
I honestly could not get the goombaface out ofmy head everytime Lazard was on screen.
I like the first couple.
OhGawDuhhh - 7/5/2012, 5:01 PM
@SuspenseSmith

"Raimi is better at serving fan fair and pulp, like Army of Darkness.

Couldn't have said it better.

Thanks for that. I see your point of view.
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/5/2012, 5:07 PM
THERE HORRIFIC. I think the kiddies would be scared.
They got the right look between movie monster and emphatic villain who wants to do good.
Thythoutrust - 7/5/2012, 5:21 PM
Ffs they're all better than the design in the movie.
CPBuff22 - 7/5/2012, 5:29 PM
I think the movie design worked well for the movie but not as well for merchandise. And in the end to make a good movie you have to do whats right for the movie not whats right to sell toys. (Looking at you TDKR "The Bat")
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/5/2012, 5:30 PM
The last one would have been great.
fangz - 7/5/2012, 5:58 PM
@THEGODDAMDEADPOOL - shouldn't the kids be scared of the Lizard?

i haven't seen the film yet, but i like the last one a lot. i remember in some interview leading up to the movie, Webb saying that they were still working on the CGI for the Lizard and that the hardest part for them was getting the mouth to actually look like it was speaking.
this might have been a concern of there's from the beginning and probably the reason we didn't get something more along the lines of the last one.
none of the designs look to me like anything i remember from any version in the comics tho.
some people say the movie Lizard is styled after Ditko's art, but i don't really get any feeling of that.
more than snout/no snout, i think his skin's texture is what makes the designs seem strange to a lot of people.
in the comics, his scales were pretty large and kinda lumpy. like they broke his head up into basic areas. the whole shape of his head was more formed from these regions of scales.
i think they went with too human of a head shape, in general, especially with the placement of the eyes.
i'm excited to see the film and how he actually turned out, but i wish they had gone with something far more grotesque, not exactly more beastly, savage or snoutish but something that would make you actually uncomfortable or sickened to see onscreen for too long. like more deformed and misborn. so that u really got the feeling that people shouldn't be messing with this kind of stuff. and something that would convey how much the transformation must have twisted Connors mind and humanity as well.
maybe i'll get that from Ifans acting when i see the film.
SoulxAvenger - 7/5/2012, 6:24 PM
the top of #4's head looks like a watermelon. The actual movie Lizard I think was better then all of these.
TheYesGuy - 7/5/2012, 6:36 PM
Can Anyone tell me Y are none of the scenes Shown in the trailer are in the movie??

That "Too Dangerous" Football thing isn't there.. Even the pic posted by gunsmith on the 1's page isn't available..

Why????
ager - 7/5/2012, 6:44 PM
Like many i read, i like the last the best but the second one has the right dose of lizard and human, dont know why they went so ultra human on it. thats the ONLY thing that felt off. i LOVED the movie. a larger snout, not huge, like the comics but a bit more pronounced would have been better IMO
R888 - 7/5/2012, 7:11 PM
Great designs , the movie version was great
