BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Hits $400 Million Worldwide

Sony has announced that Marc Webb's reboot The Amazing Spider-Man will pass the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office later today. Surely this means that a sequel is now all but guaranteed? Read on for details.

Earlier today, we told you about how The Amazing Spider-Man has had the second biggest opening in the UK of 2012 (more details about that can be found by clicking HERE). Well, the good news keeps on coming for the Sony Pictures movie as the studio have now announced that the film will pass $400 million worldwide by the end of today. The Wrap reports that it took $8.6 million on Tuesday in North America taking its total domestic gross to an impressive $153.2 million, while earning a cume of $231.8 million overseas. For those of you who are eagerly anticipating a sequel (that's all of us, right?!) then this is a very good sign that Spidey will be swinging his way back to the big screen very soon indeed. The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

We knew a sequel was coming last year, it's already confirmed for a May 2nd (I think) 2014 release date. However awesome news is still awesome.

No. It's not.

If this didn't get a sequel, chances would have been better that they may have sold the rights back to Marvel.

I will watch, be entertained by, and even praise a good Marvel film made by Fox or Sony...but I will never root for one. The sooner those studios lose these rights, the better.

Sad Marvel Studios won't get Spidey's rights back for a while, still TASM was very good. So I guess we can wait for Spidey in the MCU.

TASM was awesome and at frst I wanted the rights to revert back to marvel but now I wanna see how this storyline plays out in the sequels. bring on green goblin!!!!

Excellent news now if Sony could only integrate him into the Avengers 2 some how and then they could share a small profit from Marvel/Disney

i don't think "going back to marvel studios" or "being under marvel studios" really means a damn besides the name. there were many people that hated the crap out of im2 and had sub-par things to say about their other movies. marvel folk work with all their marvel movies, not just their marvel studios movies.

Was there anyone thinking that it wasn't getting a sequel? Unless it had been savaged by critics or met with a complete shrug by audiences, it was never in question. They have a decent start which they can build on.

As for Marvel getting the rights back, the best bet for that was always Sony Pictures being sold off by the parent company. I'm not sure if Sony's electronic sales have perked up negating the need to do that or not yet.

Not even the mighty Mickey Mouse, can get Sony to give up or even sell the rights back for this character!! Its a dream. Best we can do is atleast give em a thumbs up for givin us a very good spider-man flick. And not the dog shite dribble that Fox knock out!!

@Jollem - I can speak for myself: I'd love it because so far Marvel Studios seem to have respect for the characters, making movies that are as close as possible to the source material, and still being good.

And yes, I think IM2 is good. Not bad, not awesome. Good.

Other studios (sony/fox/universal) tend to rape the characters.

I still think this movie was "meh." Not amazing, not bad, just meh. It's like it didn't know what kind of movie it wanted to be.

I really really hope the man in the mid credits scene was electro. Seeing him in live action and his fight scenes with Spidey would be phenomenal, not to mention he'll be a villain that'll probably make Spidey have to use his intellect to stop him.

the better?? really? I've enjoyed all the movies released by Marvel studios, but Sonys Spidey films and Fox's First Class were easily better, aside from the Avengers. A good film is a good film.

Went to see this for the second time today, loved it just as much. It's awesome.

I don't understand why so many people are butthurt that Marvel doesn't have the rights. If they reach their agreement with Sony, they can still borrow Spidey for Avengers films, and will have an even greater say in the handling of the character, but this film was done very well with a lot of respect for the source material.

This film is tied for my favourite Marvel based film, along with Avengers. And I really wish people could look past which studio owns the property and just appreciate the film for it's own merits and quality. Sure, if they were [frick]ing up the characters in an unforgivable way, like how Fox treated the Fantastic Four, or Sony treated Ghost Rider, then maybe, maybe we should be getting annoyed and wanting those to go back to Marvel. But if the studio is treating them well, like Sony now is with Spidey, and it seems Fox is with X-Men (after a very up and down development of the series), then let them be.

Plus, I'd say Marvel needs the likes of Fantastic Four back more than they need Spider-Man.

IDK it would be cool to have Spidey back in the MCU but I really could care less. It's just a studio doesn't mean they could magically make the best movie just because its them. Marvel studios could make the worst spiderman film of all time for all we know.

Besides, haven't there been rumors that Sony are in financial trouble and might have to give Marvel the Spidey rights back? And that Marvel are likely to continue this storyline rather than reboot it again, since they've been trying to strike a deal to borrow Andrew Garfield as Spidey and make him a future Avenger? So what difference does it make?

Sony studios could still going under. It could crack a billion and a sequel could still be ify at this point. It really depends on how will the studios other films fare.

I would be just as happy with a Sony/Marvel sharing deal as SM reverting to Marvel. Webb hit the mark. TASM was fantastic!

@Fogs - i totally respect your opinions. i liked iron man 1 and 2 pretty equally myself.
but, close as possible to the source material? i think that's just some magic trickery wool being pulled over eyes.
when was tony stark ever a spastic stand-up comedian?(i guess he is in the comics more now, but that's meta-media after the fact)
jarvis was a real human butler.
they didn't do a gamma bomb for the hulk.
bucky was a kid.
the donald blake aspect got turned into an easter egg.
i'm sure there are many more points towards marvel studios being as respectful as any other studio or company have been with cbm's.
i was thinking about doing an article on that fact but i think i'd rather just put up some drawings and avoid the wrath of the mighty fanpeoples :)

@Jollem: Good points! Staying true to the heart of the source material is much more important than being a slave to a character's print history...which is always a mess.

Was Thor actually Donald Blake in the movie? No. But he was sent to Earth and stripped of his powers to learn humility. It worked much better than having him turn into a lame doctor.

wish people wouldn't be so obsessed with a venom related Spidey movie..I wouldn't care if the new trilogy didn't include venom at all..don't get me wrong he's a fantastic villain but he's not the be all and end all of Spider-man, soooo many more villains could get their chance to shine on the big screen, I wanna see Scorpion or Kraven on the big screen.

Santoanderson: "Meh" is a good description of my reaction to the movie. It had some good to it, but it was extremely forgettable, as so many modern movies are. There was very little special or noteworthy about it.

@Third3ye: 500 million is a lock at this point; the likely WW will be between 700-800 million. It'll probably do better than TDKR internationally; for some reason, the DK films have underperformed at the international box office.

@comicb00kguy That's exactly what I want! Maybe introduce Norman and Dr. Ock at OSCORP too to set up #3. Mysterio and Kraven are just a different types of villains compared to Lizard, Goblin, Dr. Ock, Scorpion, Electro, Vulture, etc.

As far as Venom is concerned, I don't like it. He's cool in the comics, but his whole concept is the reason why Raimi's 3rd film sucked.

And rights reverting to Marvel? Not gonna happen unless Disney buys the rights back. They (Marvel) had a lot more input on this than before and Avi Arad is involved in both Marvel Studios and non-Marvel Studios. It's all about the filmmaker and in this case Sony did good!

Can't believe some of you are "meh" about it.

Also, I'm skeptical that TDKR will impact TAS's box office much. The studio analysts fully knew TDKR was coming when they scheduled TAS. Although they are both CBM, they are pretty different types of film.
