Before I start, this review contains minor spoilers, so if you haven't seen the film and don't want to know anything about it, stop reading this right now.

When it was announced that Sony will reboot the Spider-Man franchise with new director and cast, some people liked the idea, most people didn't because they thought it was too soon. Reboots are sort of a new thing in Hollywood, and usually it's Batman Begins and Casino Royale that are first associated with that concept, when it comes to successful reboots. So, they don't have to always be bad films. Marc Webb, who previously directed a rather great film called (500) Days of Summer, was chosen to helm The Amazing Spider-Man, a new big screen adaptation about one of the most popular comic book characters ever. The thing that Webb brings to this film is a character-driven story, with a lot of emotion. That's something you don't get to see a lot in films these days, especially in a big-budget film like this. The way he direct simple conversation scenes between actors is just brilliant, and that's the heart of The Amazing Spider-Man... characters. That's not to say everything else is mediocre. Action scenes are great, with carefully planned choreography and every single scene pretty much worked. There are a couple of shaky cam moments, but that would be just a minor complaint from me. There are some brilliant battle sequences in the film. Spidey going against the Lizard in high school has to be one of the best fighting scenes in a comic book movie. And there are a lot more scenes like that, and each one is really cool. I was a little bit worried if Webb would pull off big scale action, but after this, I can safely say that he knocked it out of the park.

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a perfect casting. I couldn't be more happier with his performance, which is so unique, funny, awkward and brilliant at the same time. His Peter is someone audience can relate to, and that's why it works on so many levels. Emma Stone was great as Gwen Stacy, and the chemistry between her and Peter in the film was really good, maybe a little bit rushed though. Next to Garfield, Rhys Ifans is another example of a spot-on casting for this film. Ifans' portrayal of Dr. Curt Connors is something that gives the film emotional depth, as well as a much needed question: what does it mean to be a hero? While I did like how they handled Connors and of course, the Lizard, his motives and decisions were once again, rushed. The rest of the cast was pretty much great. I really liked Denis Leary as a sarcastic Captain George Stacy, while Martin Sheen and Sally Field were exactly what I expected, two good performances as Ben and May Parker.

Sony Pictures Imageworks, who worked on the visual effects, did a rather amazing job. With so many VFX shots, maybe two or three had that unfinished look. The scenes with Spider-Man in his full costume (which looked spectacular on the big screen) were stunning. The details, background effects, all great. Which brings me to the Lizard and motion capture. The close-ups of the character were really good, and the design is something many didn't like based on trailers. I loved it. Clearly they went with Ditko's version of the face, so the character could show some emotions in the film, and it worked. All in all, visual effects were top-notch, and like I mentioned above, the fight scene in high school (which features the best Stan Lee cameo ever) was created mostly with VFX, and it looked just wonderful. The score by James Horner was definitely much better I thought it would be. It fits the film perfectly, especially towards the end, where we get to hear some really powerful stuff.

With a character-driven story that introduces us to Spider-Man once again, but this time a little bit differently, and great performances across the board, The Amazing Spider-Man is an impressive reboot of the franchise, and here is hoping the sequel will be even better.

RATING: 8.5/10

Starring Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Sally Field and Martin Sheen, The Amazing Spider-Man is now in theatres.

I'm starting to miss the Raimi trilogy
RaleighAntrobus - 7/13/2012, 8:02 AM
I thought this movie was subpar... not that I really liked the Raimi trilogy either, but this one wasn't a strong representation of Spidey.
ShermanHakim - 7/13/2012, 8:04 AM
awesome
ATrueHero1987 - 7/13/2012, 8:08 AM
I liked this movie, I place this right after Spider-Man 2. It had flaws(very few that are perfect in my opinion) though some of these flaws could've been easily avoided. They should've included Conner's Wife & Son. It would've added more emotionally depth. 3D was good, and the action. I give it an 8/10.

I have posted a review for the movie on hubpages.com as well just click the link to see. Also the link below the review is my speculation on what a second movie may be like. Comment and vote on all my hubs please and thank you.

I liked this movie, a lot seriously, the only flaw I see of this movie (apart of the bad cgi) is that is waaay too similar to the first Raimi Spidey movie, it feels more like a remake than a reboot (tought Curt Connors's villain is more similar to Dr. Octopus).

I still love this movie, but it wasn't the right time for it, in the other hand the sequel have a lot of potential to it, I'm almost sure the sequel to this movie is going to be the best Spider-man movie ever.
HelaGood - 7/13/2012, 8:12 AM
great review, @Wolvie

i enjoyed the fresh take on Spider-man
AND REALLY enjoyed the more practical effects instead of Raimi's crappy CGI Spidey.
GUNSMITH - 7/13/2012, 8:13 AM
SPIDERMAN 2 WAS PERFECT...AMAZING SPIDERMAN DID A GOOD JOB, NOT BETTER THAN 2 BUT IT WAS GOOD..IT STANDS TO GIVE BETTER BECAUSE ANTICIPATION FOR A SEQUEL WILL MAKE THEM RAISE THE BAR.
Beatnation - 7/13/2012, 8:14 AM
@Wolvie, I hope you frikking kidding 8.5???... maybe 8.5 of 20 but hell not of 10.
WolvieCBM - 7/13/2012, 8:19 AM
Nomis: That's cool dude. This is just my take. I liked it a lot.

@Hela: Thanks.
comiccow6 - 7/13/2012, 8:21 AM
Best interpretation of Spidey yet. Well, big screen Spidey.
SAT - 7/13/2012, 8:24 AM
I loved the film.
The plot had some flaws, but the acting saved it in the end.
Great movie, my favorite Spidey movie after Spider man 2.
TrueRedBlue - 7/13/2012, 8:26 AM
Exactly how I feel, Wolvie. No matter how anyone may feel about the film, you can't argue that it's the best depiction of the Spider-Man story to date, and this Peter Parker is going to be near impossible to top for future franchises.
A wonderful, emotionally investing film. I loved it!
Greengo - 7/13/2012, 8:27 AM
Yeah I was VERY skeptical going in and didn't expect much...

That probably contributed to me liking it so much and being pleasantly surprised! : )
KungFuKoala - 7/13/2012, 8:27 AM
Can't argue with any of that.

On a technical point - thought the 3D was excellent.
TheRaven20 - 7/13/2012, 8:28 AM
I agree 100%. I still don't understand why people don't like this film. I know everyone has their own opinons but i think this has become one of the most controversial mvies in terms of people liking and disliking it. I loved it!
ATrueHero1987 - 7/13/2012, 8:29 AM
I wouldn't say it's better than Thor or Cap but It's better than Iron Man 2.
darkmetal - 7/13/2012, 8:31 AM
The movie IS NOT A SUCCESS YET. Actually its not performing as well as many thought it would. In its 1st 9 days it hasn't broke 160 million.
Even with inflated ticket prices and 3-D and IMAX prices it couldnt beat Raimis Spider-Man totals.
The movie will not break 300 million. It may not hit 250 million.
People can't hide behind the "This is the 1st movie" crap because its Spider-Man. Raimis 1st film took off and the 1st Iron Man did as well.
This movie isnt doing as good as the Twilight, Potter, Hunger Games or even Hangover 2.
Greengo - 7/13/2012, 8:34 AM
That Stan cameo WAS the best ever. Such an awesome scene!!
SageMode - 7/13/2012, 8:34 AM
I liked TASM, but it didn't blow me away like I thought it was. I do believe also that the sequel is gonna up the ante, so I'm waiting for that.
WireySpindell - 7/13/2012, 8:35 AM
I agree, thought TASM was fantastic.

WolvieCBM - 7/13/2012, 8:36 AM
Nomis: Haha, yeah, I still stand behind my review and support of that one. Glad you liked it.

darkmetal: The film passed the $400m mark worldwide in the first week. You are looking at the US box office alone, and not a single studio does that anymore, considering international box office is on fire. And I wasn't talking about the success as in money, but how it's a good and successful relaunch for the character.
BrotherStarkofMABMindz - 7/13/2012, 8:36 AM
It's great to see my favorite superhero back on screen, I just hope Sony won't take over like the did with Spider-Man 3 & 4 the directions went very bad and I hope they learned from that
SUPERMAN2013 - 7/13/2012, 8:38 AM
Not enough day time web swinging, thats my only problem with it
Spidey31 - 7/13/2012, 8:40 AM
I loved this film, I saw it twice and I kinda wanna go again lol. It had its flaws, the action was good but it was to short lived and not enough sizzle. The lizard was sorta a weak villian, like you said he was rushed and the inclusion of his family would've made it much much better. But in the end I really loved this film it's probably my favorite spiderman movie and overall movie of all time. The sequel should be much better, TASM just sets it up so perfectly and I can't wait. My score 9/10
JP22 - 7/13/2012, 8:41 AM
I thought TASM was a very solid movie. Andrew Garfield is a much better Peter Parker than Tobey Maquire and I also enjoyed the special effects. Looking forward to the sequel.
Spidey31 - 7/13/2012, 8:41 AM
And I do hope they give us some daytime swinging also it would give us that magical feel.
Godzillafart - 7/13/2012, 8:42 AM
Great Review! I agree with almost all of your points.

Also very well written. On suggestion: Avoid writing in first person.

Instead of writing "I couldn't be happier with his performance, which is so unique, funny, awkward and brilliant at the same time" write "Garfield's brilliant performance was funny and awkward while simultaneously conveying a deep sense of conviction" .

Also, there was a minor typo in that line.

OK. That was obnoxious I know, but I do this stuff for a living and your review was GREAT. Couldn't resist a few pointers. :)
JP22 - 7/13/2012, 8:44 AM
@ Godzillafart - you do this for a living and you had a typo...that's great haaha
xfan320 - 7/13/2012, 8:45 AM
This movie was AWESOME!!! By far the best SM movie. SM2 just had Doc Ock which made it ultra special cuz of a visually brilliant antagonist...

Once they roll out the SM rogues gallery, than this franchise is goin str8 for the top! The strongest element I found in this film was a real sense of the $h!t hitting the fan and NYC will soon give way to a bunch of manufactured bad guys.. multiple villains.. raimis films felt too 'one offish' and he kept killin the baddies...
R888 - 7/13/2012, 8:49 AM
The amazing spiderman was a great film, enjoy every bit of it, watch it twice, the lizard was awesome.

Can't wait to see the sequel, maybe this guy

marvel72 - 7/13/2012, 8:50 AM
i'm glad you enjoyed it,personally i thought it was good but it could of been better.

i'd give it a pretty good 3/5(fingers crossed the sequel is better)

Ranger14 - 7/13/2012, 8:50 AM
I'm catching it later this morning.
R888 - 7/13/2012, 8:54 AM
Still the most badass villain in spiderman films

Spidey31 - 7/13/2012, 8:55 AM
^^agreed we need electro to top that
ATrueHero1987 - 7/13/2012, 8:56 AM
I want this guy for the next one!
Godzillafart - 7/13/2012, 8:57 AM
@JP22: What can I say? I come here to drink scotch and blow off steam. :)
PRMR77 - 7/13/2012, 8:58 AM
it's was ok, I wasn't blown away. I still think the suit is crap and Garfield way to skinny. I went home and watched Raimi's spiderman to make my self feel a little better, there was just something missing. The amazing spiderman was not that amazing!!!
Godzillafart - 7/13/2012, 8:59 AM
It's funny. Many of the criticisms about this movie really center around the fact that the Raimi movies were not that bad.

In terms of pure film making TASM was a far better film than BB, but BB was following one of the worst CBM in history. One that effectively had killed a great character's franchise.
SkaarJones - 7/13/2012, 9:00 AM
Don't understand the hate for this movie. It was great. Not better than Spiderman 2, but it was cooler. They had his look, the web shooters, the wisecracks, the never give up spirit of Spiderman, much-better-closer-to-the-comic fight scenes, etc. I loved this flick. I loved the first 3 movies (3 the least), but the reboot is giving us a lot of what we wanted from the initial films back, and then some.
darkmetal - 7/13/2012, 9:01 AM
@WolvieCBM The US makes up a large part of a films WW gross. And how the US goes so does most of the World, so the US gross is greatly important and a great indicator of how a movie will perform elsewhere.
This movie is doing good in the UK because of Garfield.
But there are signs that point to a huge dropoff once the Typical fanbase has seen enough of the movie, just as Potter and Twilight drop off after the Fanbase has seen the movie.
As for now its just opinions and predictions but the 800 million WW prediction may be a bit too high.
In one week we shall know after Ice Age and TDKR hit.
valeriesghost - 7/13/2012, 9:01 AM
I very much enjoyed it. I agree with everything in this review pretty much. There were a few plot holes, but that isn't uncommon in a summer blockbuster, (or CBM for that matter) but i get the feeling that was because of studio involvement and rewrites and not what Webb intended.

I also don't get people bitching about how close it was to raimis, it's an origin story, of course its gonna be the same. If it was different people would be bitching about that as well.

Spider-Man 2 was about perfect, i believe with this cast and crew the sequel to this can give it a run for its money.
Spidey31 - 7/13/2012, 9:02 AM
Actually nvm electro robs banks and stuff and if we have a bank robbery scene than people will complain its too similar too SM2
Godzillafart - 7/13/2012, 9:10 AM
Spider-Man 2 was about as perfect a movie as you could have made with the cast/director they had. Personally, I prefer Webb as a director for Spider-Man and the cast for TASM is undeniably better! Can't wait for the sequels!
ATrueHero1987 - 7/13/2012, 9:11 AM
@giannis They already said the untold story would take place over a trilogy but they could've had Spider-Man catch his Uncle's killer in this one.
FrankInStereo - 7/13/2012, 9:12 AM
Has anyone at CBM given this film a bad review yet? Just wondering because it's, ya know, bad...
RamonSuarez - 7/13/2012, 9:12 AM
LOL. No [frick]ing way was TASM better than Batman Begins.

Its not even close.
KNIGHT3000 - 7/13/2012, 9:15 AM
I liked AMAZING SPIDER-MAN it was good, but not GREAT. For me thats saying a lot I think, cause I expected to hate it. As excited as it made me feel watching it, a lot of it felt like a waste of time, or just a lot of yip-yap babble-babble, which is common in your typical "high school" movie. Peter Parker had been portrayed so strongly, even without his powers, but I have never seen a weaker Spider-Man.

Sad to say, but I didn't truly realize how awesome Toby's trilogy was until I saw this. To be fair, I could only compare it to Toby's 1st, and as such Toby's was better in more ways than 1 would expect. The only thing truly AMAZING about AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, was the aspect behind the Web-Shooters and... thats it. Anything else that was cool was technically a shout out to Toby or Wlliem's performance, and it was WAY better the 1st time. Yes it was the BEST Stan Lee cameo, but definitely not the best SPIDER-MOVIE.

1. SPIDER-MAN 2.1
2. SPIDER-MAN
3. SPIDER-MAN 3
4. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Sure SPIDER-MAN 3 had a ton of story flaws, but in a lot of ways was still way better than AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and I seen it twice.

As a matter of fact, Anybody saying this is the BEST SPIDER-FILM, is either:
a) Sick of the old ones
b) In Denial
c) Just likes whatever is new
d) or just never saw the old ones

I think my assessment is fair, especially because I saw ALL 4 movies twice last week. If I had seen them all for the 1st time, I would think AMAZING SPIDER-MAN came out 1st, because Toby's was better in a few ways, especially in execution. Not until Toby's 3rd, did the story start to fall apart especially in the comedic department, but there were still good qualities, such as action and pace.
Mago - 7/13/2012, 9:17 AM
BEST SPIDER-MAN MOVIE EVER! SUCK IT HATERS
rebellion - 7/13/2012, 9:17 AM
garfield sucked. his acting was poor and forced imo. i didn't see peter, all i saw was a guy trying to imitate this accent. emma stone is an overrated actress. her character is well written but the execution wasn't good. as i said before, better than s3 but not even close to 1 and 2. funny how most critics praise the acting when it actually wasn't that good. but that's just my 2 cents.
