BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Nearing $200M Domestic; $500M Worldwide

Deadline reports that Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man will finish this weekend with around $35 million; a decent -44% hold. Ice Age 4 (which grossed $45.5 million) is the reason why the Sony Pictures reboot only managed to hold on to the top spot for a week, although the release of The Dark Knight Rises next Friday is expected to completely suck the air out of the box office as Marvel's The Avengers did back in May. Back to this weekend though, and Spidey's latest big screen outing is expected to hit $200 million by close of business and actually passed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office earlier this week. The studio are said to be confident that the film will end up grossing a worldwide cume of $800 million, although it still has quite a way to go before hitting that figure. Regardless, the film (which comes just 10 years after Spider-Man and five after Spider-Man 3 has been a success for the studio and a sequel is all but guaranteed at this point. Check out my interview with Marc Webb HERE and be sure to click HERE to read my 4* review of The Amazing Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Great hold with that -44%. WOM helped it, as expected.
MrRogers - 7/15/2012, 6:20 AM
After seeing Spiderman I really hope someday he could be in the avengers, this movie really surpassed my expectations
shadow314 - 7/15/2012, 6:27 AM
Movie was great.

Getting knocked out of the top spot already is not.

And when TDKR comes around, its money making days are over ala to what TA did to everyone.

Why again did they release this so close to TDKR?
nikgrid - 7/15/2012, 6:27 AM
@MrRogers - Nah Spidey's much better when he's by himself.
musashi - 7/15/2012, 6:33 AM
Sorry Spidey, you beat the Lizard but you won't beat the Dark Knight!
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:37 AM
@Vegakingblade and why was that? 3D.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:37 AM
@Vegakingblade you're the one trying to start shit. You brought out the Nolanite card.
rebellion - 7/15/2012, 6:40 AM
average movie. can't say i'm surprised.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:41 AM
@DoubleD can you shut the [frick] up for once with that goddamn bullshit??!!! TDKR has so far had overwhelmingly positive reactions(ranging from great to the best in the trilogy) AND the embargo is lifted tonight at midnight. And it's funny that you mention it to be "too dark and depressing". TDK was the same, yet it's still the best reviewed CBM to date.
NerdyGeek - 7/15/2012, 6:41 AM
DoubleD: TDKR review embargo ends tonight!
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:43 AM
@Vegakingblade how is that the Nolanite logic? EVERYONE knows 3D boots ticket sales. They just release an analysis article(I'll try to find it) and it said Avengers made $169 million opening weekend without 3D.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:44 AM
@Vegakingblade sure, Iron Man and Dark Knight have the same overall rating, but it's the average rating that counts and TDK has a far higher rating. Even Avengers has a higher average than Iron Man.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:45 AM
@DoubleD -_- You got something to back that up?
NerdyGeek - 7/15/2012, 6:46 AM
If you only care about what other people think about something then you need to get a life.
RorMachine - 7/15/2012, 6:48 AM
Double D, you're either delusional or trolling, either way it's boring now.

As for Spidey, I'm glad it's doing well..still could have been a lot better!
JDUKE25 - 7/15/2012, 6:48 AM
@DoubleD lmao.......wow...REACHING. Let's see the receipts of those payments then

I had predicted TASM making around $800 million mark, but it looks like I'll have to knock it down to around $600-650 million. If that.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:49 AM
"The Star reports 'The Avengers' grossed $169.2 Million for it's opening weekend without the 3D surcharge. 'Rises' will easily set the record for best opening weekend for a 2D film."

@Vegakingblade you'll get your wish tonight. ;)

DoubleD:

antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:52 AM
@DoubleD my god, you're delusional. Have you not seen the past two films??? BRUCE WAYNE HAS BEEN GOING THROUGH A PERSONAL STRUGGLE FOR THE PAST TWO FILMS!!!
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:53 AM
On topic, awesome for Spider-Man. I had predicted anywhere from $750 million to $800 million. Deserves it.
NerdyGeek - 7/15/2012, 6:54 AM
As for Spider-Man, I'm glad it's doing well, it deserves it.
UncleJimmy - 7/15/2012, 6:54 AM
I dont care how much TDKR makes. Nolan ruined Bane and Catwoman. Movie is [frick]ed already.
NerdyGeek - 7/15/2012, 6:55 AM
UncleJimmy: Of course, judge a movie by just looking at promotional material.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 6:56 AM
@Unclejimmy whatever you say. but I know you'll contribute to TDKR's box office. Can't lie about it. :)
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:00 AM
Ugh where are the Nolanite/buttsore DC fanboys who say I start shit when boards like this are littered with TDKR propaganda? Nowhere, because they have shit to say.

Comparing a rebooted TASM to anything TDKR does is retarded. I am sure Nolan's work will do excellent. And then when its over we can all go see a comic book universe in the DCU.
antonio - 7/15/2012, 7:05 AM
@Drax yeah, but who brought out the Nolanite card? And where in those first comments did I see "Amazing Spider-Man will be destroyed by TDKR"?
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:06 AM
Haha, the Nolanites and DC fanboys are just scared because they know they don't have a future beyond Nolan. Even their precious Man of Steel looks like it wants to copy Batman Begins. Meanwhile, Marvel is winning with so many new and interesting franchises while DC-Warner gives us another Superman reboot, with Zod again, in a tone already reminiscent of something that has already been done.
xinstituto - 7/15/2012, 7:06 AM
I still prefere Raimi's Spiderman..
fanboy03191 - 7/15/2012, 7:08 AM
Its made enough to warrant a sequel. We'll see something amazing then. Btw, I still think this is the best Spider-Man movie.
JDUKE25 - 7/15/2012, 7:09 AM
@Vegaking after Batman Forever and Batman and Robin can you blame people for not seeing it first time around? Besides, Batman Begins is better than TASM anyway. That's not hating on TASM, I thought it was good, I just liked Batman Begins a lot more.
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:09 AM
@Vegakingblade

Don't take these guys seriously. They are funny and insecure. Coming to a Marvel thread to promote TDKR. So sad.
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:11 AM
@JDUKE25 -

I liked Batman Begins better than TASM too.

But its kind of sad that a lesser product from a Spiderman reboot gets more play than they best Batman film to date.
zware - 7/15/2012, 7:13 AM
This film is in trouble.....
JDUKE25 - 7/15/2012, 7:18 AM
@Ramon yeah, but like I said, after the two films that came before it not everyone was excited to see another Batman film. If there had been another movie like Spider-Man 3 or worse I would think the reboot wouldn't do as well either, probably around the $400-500 million mark. Because Spider-Man is always going to have a big international market.
JDUKE25 - 7/15/2012, 7:23 AM
@Vegaking there were 2 crap films before the Batman reboot. It wasn't a one time occurrence where it improved the next time around. It went from bad to worse. So when the new one came out, people didn't have that much interest in it.
Juwon - 7/15/2012, 7:23 AM
For once I agree with Grif...
Beatnation - 7/15/2012, 7:25 AM
Spide-man 2 still best movie than TASM.
Batman27 - 7/15/2012, 7:25 AM
Vegakingblade- You seriously got nothing better to do?
Zordan - 7/15/2012, 7:28 AM
cool movie
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:34 AM
@drax94 -

LOL. That would be priceless.

@JDUKE25

Yeah, but TASM also had issues working against it - including the timing of the reboot and a saturated blockbuster market that saw Avengers, Prometheus, and TDKR all draw attention away. All in all, Spidey's reboot is pretty damn impressive - especially compared to Batman Begins.
worldbreaker - 7/15/2012, 7:36 AM
i really doubt TDKR will beat TDK in overall sales, or even spider-man. it might break some opening records but nolan's intention wasn't to make as much money as possible or he would've had it released in 3d too.

hopefully superman will be something we all agree on and our ridiculous Marvel/DC highschool drama will fade. it's like westside story but everyone's wearing superhero costumes

i go on the DC articles too, i'm a fan of both. but if you can find any posting where a diehard DC fan doesn't call out the marvelites within the first 10 comments you deserve a medal. i dont understand what it is. i cant be the only one that notices that

Juwon - 7/15/2012, 7:37 AM
Nolanite , DC Troll or Marvel Troll, I think in the end we all want the same thing, god quality CBMs, movies that will keep our genre growing and also bring our imagination from the papaer pages of the comic books to the big screen and DVDs.

I personally thought TASM was amazing, not better than the Raimi Spiderman, but amazing all the same. I think Avengers rocked and I can't wait for another one, but as a Superman man fan and a fan of all comics, I think Man of Steel has to rock and I hope just as DC fans can come out and say Marvel films such as Iron man and the avengers rocked, Marvel fans can put their honest cap on and give "honest" views on TDKR and MOS.....If not you're all frigging TROLLS
worldbreaker - 7/15/2012, 7:39 AM
@DoubleD- haha i made fun of superman's hair, that was my only complaint
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:39 AM
@Just1buttsoreguy

Don't go and get all buttsore on me again, son. I saw the bootleg trailer, the damn thing looked almost EXACTLY like the Batman Begins trailer in terms of theme and tone.

I can already predict it right now:

1.) Zod = Ras Al' Ghul (A wise, older authority figure who will stand as a corrupted version of the young, idealistic protagonist who has to stop his megalomaniacal plan)

2.) Luthor = Joker (an ideological counterpoint to the idealist protagonist obsessed with bringing down the world his meteoric rise helped to create)

3.) Brainiac = Bane (an unstoppable force from the past who seeks to destroy everything)

Mark it.
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:43 AM
@drax94

Haha. Just remember, they come here because they're scurred. They knew the jig is up soon and all the news will be Marvel based.
Batman27 - 7/15/2012, 7:45 AM
I honestly don't give a damn about how much money a film makes. If we saw things like that than Avatar would be the greatest film ever. I just care about story. There's a very good chance TDKR will have good story.
worldbreaker - 7/15/2012, 7:46 AM
siegel family should sell superman to marvel
RamonSuarez - 7/15/2012, 7:48 AM
I mean think about it.

We are going to be seeing tons of cool stuff about Antman, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America and Avengers 2 while the same buttsore Nolanites/DC fanboys will be jacking off to bits and pieces of news about Man of Steel (aka Superman Begins).
