Commitment to Fox May Keep Marc Webb Out Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Sequel

The Amazing Spider-Man is still chugging along at the box office with the last numbers that we got going over the 500 million dollar range. With numbers like that and the films cliff hanger after credits scene a sequel is all but a given. Whether or not director Marc Webb will be apart of the sequel not so much a given. Columbia Pictures Chief Doug Belgrad sat down to talk with The Hollywood Reporter where he said Fox Studio holds the power to let Webb do the film or not. We'd really like him back, but there are obstacles. He has an obligation to Fox," he said. The obligation that Belgrad is referring to is Webb owes them another film for doing 500 Days of Summer. This is all still up in the air at the moment and it is NOT a for sure answer that he isn't going to return. What this does mean though is that there is a chance that Spidey will have a new director when he hits theaters again in 2014.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Fields, Denis Leary, and is in theater NOW!!!!!!

Weak!! I really liked his interpretation of Spidey!
Spidex3000 - 7/19/2012, 5:52 AM
I'd actually be okay if he was just on for script consultant and helped write the screenplay, for the second spidey, I'd like a more action oriented director to give the fights some more spice...

Or keep Webb, and find some one who knows action.
Jollem - 7/19/2012, 5:52 AM
i would prefer if mr. webb were to direct the sequel(s)

he is a great director. yes, i've only seen two of his films, and both were very well directed

there are other talented directors out there but dammit webb, you nailed it
wyokid - 7/19/2012, 5:53 AM
Thank christ!
marvel72 - 7/19/2012, 5:53 AM
it was good, but i do think someone else could do as good as if not better a job than webb.
Batman27 - 7/19/2012, 5:56 AM
This is horrible news. If he doesn't come back the film will feel different. Every director has there own kind of style. It also matters who they get in case he can't return. If its a bad director the series could be doomed.
AgentZero - 7/19/2012, 5:57 AM
What he meant to say was : "We fired him ! But since the movie is still out in the theatres, we can't be making bad publicity for it by annoucing it right now. Wait until the end of this year for the official announcement."
inky - 7/19/2012, 6:01 AM
fox might be another of those studio's making the error of changing director for sequals and it places them on the same footing as Warner both need a kick in the pants and to get there act's together, both fail to produce content to push the industries abilities and shelve so many good ideas.
Marvelboyliam1981 - 7/19/2012, 6:04 AM
If he can't do a 2nd one let someone like brad bird take over. MI:4 was great and he's shown what he can do with superheroes with the incredibles. Although its a kids film it's still got some amazing action set pieces and like the amazing spiderman a lot of emotion. I think IMO that he would be a great choice. Plus I hear he's a comic fan so may know the universe well.
GUNSMITH - 7/19/2012, 6:08 AM
DENG GRIF, DON'T YOU LIKE ANYTHING?
Christuffer - 7/19/2012, 6:09 AM
Lol "theater"? Forgot an "s" buddy.

It be in theater now, you want million dollar?!
HellsHammer - 7/19/2012, 6:13 AM
That movie was way too overrated anyway. Let them get someone else
Morpheus82 - 7/19/2012, 6:16 AM
Who should direct the sequel? J.J Abrams, David Fincher, Brad Bird, Peter Jackson, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Neill Blomkamp or Matthew Vaughn?
GUNSMITH - 7/19/2012, 6:16 AM
THEY WOULD BE PRETTY DUMB TO SWITCH A FORMULA THAT GOT THEM THAT MUCH MONEY..
Godzillafart - 7/19/2012, 6:20 AM
That would suck, Webb did an amazing job.

Where do they get the figure "800,000,000"? Boxofficemojo says 530 mil.
SebHope - 7/19/2012, 6:21 AM
No matter what some may say about his action skills, he's brilliant with characters, alot of the dialogue between emma and andrew was improvised, and thats because thats his style, i feel if he isnt directing the sequel could lose its spark.
JoshWilding - 7/19/2012, 6:22 AM
Bullshit. I'm guessing he doesn't want to come back or Sony wants a yes-man. There were rumours they didn't like the first cut which probably resulted in a ton of reshoots and all those scenes being taken out. It's a shame because Webb did a fantastic job.
Robert - 7/19/2012, 6:26 AM
Typical Fox and Hollywood in general...when the movie is a great success....change things up. Stupid.
Intothepoop - 7/19/2012, 6:28 AM
@immortalvigilante

really? None of those guys would come on to a sequel with little creative control.
AlibiBreakfast - 7/19/2012, 6:28 AM
This was such an awful movie. They should've just made an awkward teen love story instead.
musashi - 7/19/2012, 6:28 AM
The new PC way of saying he's fired!
ElDuce74 - 7/19/2012, 6:30 AM
800 million? Where did you get that number? It's 530 worldwide. Fair AND accurate reporting...
sciencefriction - 7/19/2012, 6:32 AM
Good, they need a different director. The first movie is fine, but I think things need to stay fresh, and we need more of Spider-Man, less teenage b/s.
astromerc - 7/19/2012, 6:35 AM
Now fox has found away to F*** up spiderman!
BenderDickCumPatch - 7/19/2012, 6:36 AM

DON'T LEAVE. PLEASE.

Hey Fox you flaming maggots.

WaylonJones - 7/19/2012, 6:45 AM

Jollem - 7/19/2012, 6:51 AM

Spideyguy94 - 7/19/2012, 7:02 AM
@PuyGuy you say spideys going down yet it's already outgrossed every DC movie except the dark knight and childish marvel movies? I'm sorry but what was DC's latest movie before TDKR? oh yeah green lantern
Jollem - 7/19/2012, 7:03 AM
@theonewhointrudes - that was kinda in response to "Talent shouldnt be wasted for Comic Geeks."

but thank you for preemptively coming at me when i was very much in defense of mr. fincher :)
Morpheus82 - 7/19/2012, 7:19 AM
@Puguy LMAO! Fincher, Nolan, Abrams etc... was only mentioned as a suggestion, i never said that i wanted to see one of them making a spidey movie, but seriously you can't be serious if you want Peter Berg. Look what happend to Battleship it sucked.
BlackDynamite - 7/19/2012, 7:23 AM
Spiderman is one of my favorite superheroes and I forgot I saw this movie :(
DanteSparda - 7/19/2012, 7:36 AM
Fücking Fox, it's an evil plan to take Spidey out of the way of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four!

I really want him back for the sequel, but if he can't I hope he at least come back as a producer.
AnonymousGuy - 7/19/2012, 7:46 AM
He owes them for directing 500 days of summer!? WHAT!? They owe HIM for directing 500 days of summer! WTF is going on here?
Godzillafart - 7/19/2012, 7:56 AM
Webb just created the best Spider-Man movie in history, and one of the best origin movies (second to Iron Man and the '78 Superman). I hope he is not replaced. Sure, it's not making the absurdly high gross of Avengers, but it's doing great and I predict sequels will do even better. I'll be disappointed if Webb doesn't return.
Nomis1800 - 7/19/2012, 7:58 AM
It was disappointing.
Spidey31 - 7/19/2012, 8:01 AM
What the hell? He seriously needs to come back, he's so well with the characters I don't think they could find anyone better.
ATrueHero1987 - 7/19/2012, 8:04 AM
Gotta love FOX studios right?smh I hope Webb can come back.
MisterNiceGuy - 7/19/2012, 8:19 AM
Yay another douchebag troll to stir shit up. Go away!
driver - 7/19/2012, 8:26 AM

Spidey31 - 7/19/2012, 8:30 AM
I hope he comes back
TrillLeanCup - 7/19/2012, 8:35 AM
Webb is a bad director (condesendingWonka.jpeg) tell me all about you're multi-million dollar grossing movie
TrillLeanCup - 7/19/2012, 8:37 AM
and avengers only made a shit ton of money cause geee let me think it has something for Thor fans,Captain America fans, Ironman fans,Hulk fans..etc.... and you're comparing it to spiderman -___- please use some logic morons
Emanuel14 - 7/19/2012, 8:47 AM
that's good, the guy transformed spider-man into a love story, [frick] off marc
TrillLeanCup - 7/19/2012, 8:49 AM
because what raimi did wasn't a love story at all huh..plus everyone knows Gwen Stacy is the better broad
thewolfx - 7/19/2012, 8:53 AM
YES! you sheep act like theres no better director for spiderman then marc webb

hopefully they get a better director who actually knows who peter parker is

and a more faithful suit .
SpoonWielder - 7/19/2012, 9:14 AM
WHY DOES FOX RUIN EVERYTHING!?!
AutobotCommander84 - 7/19/2012, 9:47 AM
He needs to come back. I can't think of any director that can handle his vision of Spider-Man rather than himself. He's really good at pulling at the strings in your heart and I think that's whats missing from, frankly, all superhero movies. If you just focus on action and not about making the audience care for your character, than it's not a good movie.
AutobotCommander84 - 7/19/2012, 9:48 AM
@Intruder Fincher wasn't talking about TASM, he was talking about the first movie. He pitched his idea to Sony but they went with Sam Raimi instead.
IIIAdamantiumIII - 7/19/2012, 10:05 AM
fox = always [frick]ing with shit
LokiLaufyson - 7/19/2012, 10:12 AM
