BOX OFFICE: Not So AMAZING; SPIDER-MAN Sequel Falls To #2 After One Week At #1

BOX OFFICE: Not So AMAZING; SPIDER-MAN Sequel Falls To #2 After One Week At #1

Though some analysts thought there was a chance that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 could hold onto the top spot before Godzilla stomps on the spider next week, Neighbors has indeed emerged victorious. Not a good result for Sony domestically...

As expected, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has indeed dropped to #2 after only one week of release. The Friendly Neighborhood superhero was clobbered by some not so friendly neighbours in the Seth Rogen and Zac Efron led comedy, Neighbours. Earlier this week, analysts predicted that it could cause an upset, but many later stood firmly behind their predictions that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would hold onto the top spot. However, with $51 million, Neighbors became Seth Rogen's highest grossing debut and shrugged off the Marc Webb helmed sequel which trailed behind with a 59% drop for a $37 million weekend. Domestically, it now looks set to earn only $225 million to $235 million all in. Not great and a real low point for the franchise financially speaking, but it's what it makes overseas which will help ensure this version of Spider-Man swings onto the big screen for a third time in 2016. After all, with over $400 million overseas, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has now hit $550 million worldwide. When you look at those numbers, it doesn't seem so bad, but North America is still a vital market and this is still far lower than the $1 billion gross Sony were expecting. How well it fares against the first movie's total will be interesting to see!

This is pretty sad. I never thought the day would come where Spidey failed to beat Zac Efron.

Well... Here goes Sony trying to cast Efron as Mysterio and Rogen as Kraven in order to do well lol.
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:02 AM
Where's your source. You have none so this isn't reliable. I only listen to Box Office Mojo.
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:03 AM
Haha josh you're pathetic.
SuperCat - 5/11/2014, 8:03 AM
Grif for president. Sh*t movie.
charlie2094 - 5/11/2014, 8:03 AM
A Spidey film shouldn't be taken out so easily in it's second weekend, though it does go hand in hand with the decreasing interest in the character at the domestic, continually performing smaller.

So the production budget was $200-$255
marketing budget $180-$190

+ theaters take a large cut

Still solid numbers, but not for a Spider-Man film. They put so much into this, clearly expecting a larger return....should finish around $750, which isn't great for what the spent/expected. Great for your average film, not for this though

@TheAbaryMan369, well most comedies hit big their first week. Sucks about Spiderman, but as long as makes enough for a sequel I'm good. It's weird that every Spiderman film does worse then the ladt at the domestic boxoffice.
charlie2094 - 5/11/2014, 8:04 AM

I imagine the source is Deadline, who are super reliable

MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:06 AM
Well don't imagine. It needs to be confirmed.
batz11 - 5/11/2014, 8:07 AM
Guess I better go check this out soon, before it's out of the theaters, lol...
charlie2094 - 5/11/2014, 8:07 AM
Deadline predict it'll do $225 - $235, what with Godzilla coming. Not great numbers but like they said "it'll likely come to profitability", though probably not by much
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:07 AM
I love Josh only posts negative articles. Such a depressing person.
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:07 AM
If its a prediction, why are is he posting it as fact?
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:09 AM
Just read the article. Josh plagiarized and didn't even give it a source. There is clearly something with this prick.
charlie2094 - 5/11/2014, 8:09 AM

He's not, what he's said as fact is fact...the only prediction is what I said, the "225-235", which he also said was a likely outcome. This is definitely from Deadline, just checked and they're just as reliable as BoxOfficeMojo
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:11 AM
SaltyDaGod how have you been man?
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 5/11/2014, 8:13 AM
This isn't because people don't like the character anymore, it is because the movie sucked.
PeterDarker121 - 5/11/2014, 8:15 AM
With Great Sequels Come Great Responsibility.
MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:17 AM
@SaltyDaGod Haha, you're my bro!

MegaPrime1107 - 5/11/2014, 8:19 AM

monsterswin - 5/11/2014, 8:22 AM

JoJo1982 - 5/11/2014, 8:22 AM

Very funny movie
BboiBlack - 5/11/2014, 8:24 AM
If only Spidey was coming off of Avengers and face no competition.
DoubleD - 5/11/2014, 8:24 AM
SO ! Man of Steel fell to number 3 the second week and to number 4 the third week.
TheRationalNerd - 5/11/2014, 8:24 AM
Are we forgetting that Cap lost one week to Rio 2? lol
theowl - 5/11/2014, 8:25 AM
Well I loved the movie. That's enough. It get's a sequel so I am more than happy.
DoubleD - 5/11/2014, 8:25 AM
I loved The Amazing Spiderman 2 movie. 8 out of 10 Stars for me,

Saw it twice already might go see it again today.
marvel72 - 5/11/2014, 8:26 AM
spider-man hasn't lost his popularity,he is still popular among the young & old fans.its just this movie has split fans & audiences down the middle just like man of steel did last year.

worldwide gross $523,801,000 not bad for a movie that's been out three weeks nearly four.
JoJo1982 - 5/11/2014, 8:26 AM

No it didn't buddy

It only lost to other woman
Mechagino - 5/11/2014, 8:26 AM
@Turk: Oh? So you're saying we should only watch films distributed by Disney and never watch any other companies movies?

Yeah... No. That logic is stupid.
AlexanderLykins - 5/11/2014, 8:26 AM
That's a joke right. It is? Oh, okay then.
AntMan - 5/11/2014, 8:26 AM
I loved the movie, but if it fails to outgross it's predecessor, it's not a good look.
DoubleD - 5/11/2014, 8:26 AM
TheBlackNerd -, Cap never lost to Rio for a week. Lost a Friday not a week
JoJo1982 - 5/11/2014, 8:27 AM
Speaking of Cap2 did it hit the 700 Million mark this weekend???
DrVenkman - 5/11/2014, 8:28 AM
Captain America had a longer time on top!!! Woo!

charlie2094 - 5/11/2014, 8:28 AM

Cap stayed on top of Rio, stayed number one for three weeks, lost out in it's fourth week.

Not doing bad numbers, but definitely bad for Spider-Man, they're not going to make much profit at all on this, no where near as much as they'd have expected. Not to mention it's already number 2, Godzilla is going to push it down even more
TheRationalNerd - 5/11/2014, 8:28 AM
Cap 3
X-Men: Apocalypse

Are all debuting in May 2016. I'm peeping it out right now that it's going to be one messy competition if someone doesn't move their release date.
