Emma Stone On "Modernizing" Gwen Stacy In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Emma Stone talked a lot about her role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 recently, like how they wanted to modernize Gwen Stacy, the character's relationship with the titular hero, the scene she shared with Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane, and more.

The Amazing Spider-Man is officially released in the US, and many fans are flooding the theaters this weekend to see it. One of the highlights of the film according to many is Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. When she spoke with reporters at a press junket recently, she talked about wanting to make Gwen popular with the audience since she may not be as well known to the general audience as Mary Jane Watson was. “We wanted to modernize [Gwen] — she’s independent, and she has a lot of her own goals. I think her heroic impulse is pretty strong because of her father. And she’s got a great mind. So she’s going to school for medicine, and she wants to save people just as much as Peter without being bitten by a radioactive spider,” Stone said, and added that the director and screenwriters wanted to keep her character, “proactive, and never a damsel in distress.” Her character is the movie was praised mostly for her connection with Peter. Regarding Gwen's relationship with him, she says, “their relationship is very grounded, very human, and I think that’s important… Gwen is probably the most human component outside of Aunt May.”

Shailene Woodley was also cast in the movie as MJ, and eventually went on to become a huge star with the movie Divergent after her character got cut from the final movie. Stone talked a bit about working with Woodley, and said that they had a great time together filming a very emotional scene in the film. “There was actually kind of a beautiful scene with Gwen and Mary Jane that we shot, where Gwen is going to say goodbye, and Mary Jane’s on the porch, and they talk to each other, and Gwen says, ‘Will you give him this message for me?’” Stone recalled. “And the last line was, she says, ‘oh, I didn’t say my name, by the way — I’m MJ,’ and I say, ‘I’m Gwen,” and I’m about to go to London, and I say, ‘I’m really glad I got to meet you, MJ.’ And then I leave for London, which makes me want to cry even now. It was beautiful, it was really beautiful.” Although one of these emotional scenes was cut, the movie was still packed full of scenes that felt full of emotion, and that's mainly because Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were so close together and filmed their scenes together from the heart. Did you enjoy the movie, or did you hate the way most of the movie was handled? Sound off in the usual spot, and check out The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters this weekend if you haven't already.
