SPOILERS: Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2's Ending

SPOILERS: Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2's Ending

Despite the mixed reaction, the latest installment in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise featured a heart-stopping conclusion that wowed a lot of moviegoers. Stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, as well as producer Matt Tolmach, shed some details of the film's ending. Major SPOILER WARNING.

Though the reaction to Sony's latest superhero effort, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has been mixed, one of the most praised aspects was the film's ending. Emma Stone, who plays Gwen Stacy, was well aware that the films would adapt the famous "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" storyline: "I knew from the very beginning what the intention was for Gwen's arc." Producer Matt Tolmach says that right from the beginning, the idea of using Gwen meant that her death was inevitable. "When you decide that you're going to tell the Gwen Stacy story, you know you're going to end up there. You just try to put it off for a little while, because you don't want to lose Emma. You don't want to lose Gwen. You don't want to lose that dynamic," he detailed. "But these movies are all about Peter Parker and his journey in life and as Spider-Man. You're constantly having to turn the screws on him."

Star Andrew Garfield felt it "would have been strange" not to follow through with Gwen's arc. "It's a defining moment in the comics, and not just in the Spider-Man comics, but in comic book history," he said. "It's a fact that we lose people. People die. Death is strangely a part of life. You can't have life without death. It's an amazing thing, and a shocking thing, for audiences of these types of films to witness. Especially with such a beloved character." Garfield believes that Gwen's demise and the increased stakes in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 separate it from the likes of The Avengers and Man of Steel"I think it's incredibly bold and incredibly necessary, to keep pushing the envelopes and the boundaries of what these movies can contain. There's a tendency to want to be safe, and a tendency to want to please everybody, and to not ruffle any feathers. There are so many of these movies out, so how do we make sure this one stands out and needs to be seen?"

"I think the love story we've created between Gwen and Peter is very authentic and very deep," he continued, admitting that "it's one of the strongest parts of that first film". In terms of the future, as to where Peter will go from here. "How is he going to continue fighting? How is he going to continue loving? Will he ever be able to love again? Will he be able to have any personal relationships in his life ever again? What does it do to his power, his ability to fight, his compassion as a human being? These are all the big questions that I'm starting to ask about where we go next."

Despite her thoughts on the importance of Gwen's story, Stone believes the Mary Jane character to be as important to Peter's arc. "I'm excited to see what happens with Mary Jane." Tolmach praised Stone and her acting abilities, and while her departure from the series will be difficult, he says it is for the benefit of the overall narrative. "Right now I can't fathom a universe without her," he said. "On the other hand, if we're being true, this is all about what happens to Peter. You don't get to just make it all feel good. This never ends. It hangs over him forever, and it will forever define him. It's with a heavy heart, but it's in service of the story."

At least the death scene was well handled.

Too bad most of the rest of the movie wasn't.
SpiderFraud - 5/5/2014, 4:52 PM
They done the Gwen death scene justice, Andrew Garfield portrayed some of the best acting I seen in a super hero movie, in that one scene. Too bad Green Goblin was horrible.
ruadh - 5/5/2014, 4:53 PM
I read a comment today on one of the numerous ASM articles, and I'm sorry I can't remember which it was or who said it, but basically it was suggesting that ASM3 be a happy story.

In my experience with the comics especially, Peter has one of the most miserable lives. I think he and Daredevil have the absolute worst luck with women and just in life. So, if they are keeping true to what Peter is about (and yeah yeah, Webb is raping it, etc etc), then I wouldn't expect things to get cheerful.
XelCorp - 5/5/2014, 4:54 PM
Loved this movie.
@BustASpideyPose- What was it that you did not like about the goblin?
SuperbatSpider1003 - 5/5/2014, 4:55 PM
Hmmm I just hope mj isnt a freaking Rebound girl and I wish they introduced her in TASM2
JJJameson - 5/5/2014, 4:55 PM
Regardless of what anyone says, this is in my humble opinion the best Spider-Man film so far and one of this genre's very best, very much unlike the other recently critically panned superhero film, Man of Steel.

It guts me to see how much shit this film is getting for actually been bold and doing a literal adaptation of what is a Spider-Man comic book saga into the big screen. I've been reading Spider-Man comics my entire life, and regardless what the reception of this film is or how much money it makes, I don't think any other film that comes after this one can top this one. Brillian job, Webb and the cast.

Thank you for making the Spider-Man film I've been waiting my entire life to see.
SuperbatSpider1003 - 5/5/2014, 4:59 PM
I agree with JJJ
Abary - 5/5/2014, 4:59 PM
Gwen's death was one of the only good parts of the movie.
SpiderFraud - 5/5/2014, 4:59 PM

I just don't like the design and felt he was overacting. I mostly hate how it reminded me of Venom from Spider-Man 3. I do love most of the Harry Osborn stuff, though.

About to download a bootleg cam version, just so I can watch the first ten minutes...had mad feels watching it in the theaters.
XelCorp - 5/5/2014, 5:00 PM
The only way I can see this making any sense is for MJ and Peter to start dating by the END of TASM 3 and even that might be too early (Peter still recovering from the loss of Gwen) unless TASM 3 takes place Years after ASM 2. They should not be together until the fourth film imo.
ruadh - 5/5/2014, 5:01 PM
Wow....JJJ?! High marks indeed, and I put it to you that JJJ's taste in this case FAR outweighs whatever Rottentomatoes says.
MikeHawk - 5/5/2014, 5:01 PM
The Gwen death was done very well, perhaps the best part of the movie. BUT the set up for the death was done TERRIBLY. The freakin movie shoehorned Goblin in there because the filmmakers wanted to stay "faithful" to the comics but it didnt work cause that was goblins only scene. We The audience didnt even who the hell harry was suppose to be. Gobby is suppose to be the greatest villain for spidey but we had some nobody cause the death. Didnt work at all. The movie shouldve just been peter/gwen relationship, peter/harry relationship, peter/aunt may, full harry to goblin transformation, and a little bit of daily bugle. Too many subplots ruined the movie
XelCorp - 5/5/2014, 5:02 PM
@JJJ- Agreed. Most of the hate/shit this film is getting is coming from the same people who were hating before it was even released
XelCorp - 5/5/2014, 5:04 PM
@MikeHawk- I'm pretty sure we will see Full on Green Goblin with the Sinister Six in TASM 3
BANEofExistence - 5/5/2014, 5:07 PM
Emma as Gwen, Andrew as Peter and Sally as Aunt May were all great as per usual. They had the best scenes in the entire film! Kind of hope Cooper returns as Norman (He supposedly signed a decent contract so maybe his death is faked?) Best parts of the movie were the Gwen and Peter scenes especially the iconic death scene. The other highlights were the opening chase scene, the time square sequence and for me personally the X-Men post credit scene :p everything else was a bit of a let down... Electro had potential, Goblin was mis used even more then Venom in spiderman 3(at least goblin harry has potential for a return), Rhino was lame, Dr. Kafka was the worst in the entire movie... Lets hope Webb redeems with amazing spiderman 3
SuperbatSpider1003 - 5/5/2014, 5:08 PM
@ Marvel1997 yea I agree MJ should be introduced at the beginning an have him only mess with the idea of dating her
MikeHawk - 5/5/2014, 5:09 PM
Im sure for that as well Marvel1997 but thats the thing. Why not have the full goblin arc happen in AsM3? Same for the Rhino. Dont just put goblin in there for literally 5 min and get knocked out.

The problem with this movie is that its trying TOO hard to build a universe. Theres so many newly Introduced characters that either do nothing, didnt need to be there YET, or simply did not do enough. It worked for marvel because they had patience and a plan. Cannot say the same for this
CherryBomb - 5/5/2014, 5:15 PM
It'd be nice to see a flirtation between Peter and Felicia first, have her be the bridge between Gwen and MJ, the two biggest loves of his life. That way it won't make MJ seem like a forced storyline.

MikeHawk - 5/5/2014, 5:18 PM
I would really love to know Kevin Feige's reaction to the movie
ruadh - 5/5/2014, 5:23 PM

I actually always loved the Black Cat stuff when I was reading. I think she fell right in the middle of my Spiderman collection. I started reading after Gwen, and stopped right after Venom showed up.
CinemaHero - 5/5/2014, 5:23 PM
HOLY CRAP!! J Jonah Jameson APPROVES of something Spiderman!!

xMichaelxScottx - 5/5/2014, 5:35 PM
I for one thought the movie was great 8.5-9/10. Some people have made valid reasons for hating but the lot of people just nitpick and over exaggerate. Its a shame to see Gwen going but its safe to see everybody saw that coming. I don't know how I can watch without Emma having a role. Maybe she'll go back to her red hair, and play Mary Jane.
DerekLake - 5/5/2014, 5:51 PM
The biggest problem was that they rushed through the five months of grieving that would have raised the questions of "How is he going to continue fighting? How is he going to continue loving", etc. It was a horrible way to end the movie. It should have ended with Gwen's funeral and the Fiers-Osborn dialogue.
Hulksta - 5/5/2014, 5:58 PM
That plotline was 40 years in the making...and shocked no one.
yonny616 - 5/5/2014, 7:11 PM
@Hulksta Actually, it shocked people who don't follow the comics.
CaptainAmerica1945 - 5/5/2014, 7:15 PM
Just saw the movie tonight. Not great, but maybe not as bad as RT rated it. I would give it a 70. Not as good as CATWS, or Iron Man 3 or even MOS, but not as bad as Batman and Robin.

Some parts near the beginning with Spider-Man swing through the city were great. But there were also some cringe worthy parts as well, that seemed campy.

The big fight with Electro was mostly CGI and since it was not in the city, it looked more like a video game. Perhaps if that fight had been set in a real setting it would have been more grounded.

CATWS is still the best CBM this season. I hope that TASM3 will be better.....

Geotheleo - 5/5/2014, 7:27 PM
Well.. Black cat is up mext
V8ER - 5/5/2014, 7:54 PM
@JJJameson Agreed 100%
Prime - 5/5/2014, 8:07 PM
Don't worry, redheads are up you alley.
Prime - 5/5/2014, 8:09 PM
@JJJ this scene wasn't bad, it was just everything else in the movie sucked.
GliderMan - 5/5/2014, 8:10 PM
Should have waited til the next movie.
OneBadDay - 5/5/2014, 8:32 PM
Wow, I haven't seen this much hate for this movie on any other site. Yes, it had it's flaws(especially with Electro's dialog), but it was everything that a Spiderman movie should be. It was fun, and it didn't take itself too seriously.
Ramiel - 5/5/2014, 8:38 PM
Gwen's death has people crying and sniffing in the theater I was in. Emma Stone played a great Gwen if you ask me.
ComicsToFilm - 5/5/2014, 9:12 PM
Only death in a comic film I truly cared about in quite some time, and I couldn't have know the moment was coming more.
knocturnal - 5/5/2014, 9:19 PM
1 of the top heart felt scenes in a comic movie, was even better the 2nd time i saw it, wish peter would have yelled while holding her like superman 1
KnuckleBomb - 5/5/2014, 9:21 PM
I swear if Black cat is in and she becomes the rebound and mj end game that'll be the straw that broke the camel's back
its one of the reason why I can't watch the tas anymore
I was disappointed by this one but i will admit they got spidey down
and Gwen's death right for me though I wished to have seen ny turn against him
and the relationships I hated everything else and wanted more extended fight scenes everything else was not to my liking
staypuffed - 5/5/2014, 9:34 PM
"I am glad there are still real Spidey fans that knows a terrible movie when they see one."

REAL fans? How could you possibly define a real fan? Some people have been reading Spider-Man comics for 50 years, some a few, and some have never picked up one in their life - but that doesn't mean they love the character any less. I consider myself a huge Spider-Man fan, and loved TASM2. Comics are subjective. Films are subjective. It's all opinions.

There is no such thing as a REAL FAN.
superotherside - 5/5/2014, 10:24 PM
So why are you guys looking into the future?

Do people really want this Spider-man to continue? I mean if this movie doesn't make more than it's predecessor then... what's the sequel going to be like? Might not even have enough to pay the budget Sony.

Do yourself a favor Sony and give it back to Marvel.
sameoldthing - 5/6/2014, 4:41 AM
-Gwen dying was expected but executed very well..that single web shot out & then it's tendrils spread out reaching for Gwen with a small finger like hand..excellent.
-The web snagging her but just a mili-second too late, the delayed thin drip of blood from her nose. Perfect.
-Peters reaction to her death was very solid acting, only Sally Field as Aunt May telling him he was "her boy" was as dramatic. 90% of all the other acting was pretty weak.
-That was a great death scene (if you cut out the awful Goblin part) too bad the rest of movie was pretty bad.
OcciferPing - 5/6/2014, 6:24 AM
Loved this movie. But the finale was a little too short. Should have been more fighting between Goblin and Spider-Man before Gwen dies. Still an amazing scene, though.
