Update: According to Deadline, Sony Pictures The Amazing Spider-Man 2, directed by Marc Webb, dropped 72% from Friday to Friday. The R-rated comedy Neighbors, starring Seth Rogen and Zac Effron, will take the top spot.

Universal's raunchy new comedy Neighbors, starring Seth Rogen ("The Green Hornet") and Zac Efron ("High School Musical"), knocked The Amazing Spider-Man 2 out of first place at the North American box office. The R-rated comedy that also stars Rose Byrne ("X-Men: First Class") and Dave Franco ("Warm Bodies") pulled in $18.3M to $18.5 on Friday and will finish the weekend with $46M+ to $48M cume. Audiences gave it a 'B' CinemaScore, which is actually slightly less than Spidey's 'B+' CinemaScore. Spidey will finish in second with $10M+ on Friday and is on pace for $37M to $38M. If you include The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $8.7M Thursday, the Friday-to-Friday drop is a jaw-breaking 72%.
Update: After a night of partying, the frat boys are still really high. The Universal comedy smoked Spidey last night by a wide margin — $19.5M vs. $10.1M to $10.3M. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has hit its wall in its second weekend … the revised total domestic cume for the Sony/Marvel franchise will be around $225M to $230M all in as the domestic audience for this one continues to shrink. The first installment ended up at $262M. Still, it is nearing $400M internationally so it will reach that magic number of $755M which means it will make a little profit (maybe 20%). - Deadline

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. The film will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx is Electro and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn. The Amazing Spider-Man sequel will swing into theaters May 2, 2014.

luffycapri - 5/9/2014, 11:45 PM
Time to come back to Marvel studios, now That the Spiderman movies are not making much money at the box office, maybe avi ard will re think teamimg up with Marvel Studios
VISIONaryNPa - 5/9/2014, 11:48 PM
It'll hit 600 mil soon...
HavocPrime - 5/9/2014, 11:49 PM
It still has 450 million under it's belt so it won't make Sony consider selling the rights any time soon.
MikeHawk - 5/9/2014, 11:53 PM
Can Sony at least get rid of the entire production crew? :)
MARVELFAN1995 - 5/9/2014, 11:54 PM
I don't get it. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a great movie! I don't give a [frick] what the haters say! This movie deserves more. Then again it's only been out for a week so the can still increase
luffycapri - 5/9/2014, 11:55 PM
the budget of this movie was 220 million dollars promotional budget was $190
Bekss - 5/9/2014, 11:56 PM
Even if I don't like the movie, I have to say that it's doing really well overseas, maybe it won't be a failure but it is a BIG dissapointment. I guess it will make the same as ASM or a little less which is bad for the huge budget of this one.
Kurne - 5/9/2014, 11:58 PM
Eh, I've kinda changed my mind about this film. 7/10.
Visualiza - 5/9/2014, 11:59 PM
Thank the movie gods for this one.
Kurne - 5/9/2014, 11:59 PM

If Avi went to Marvel, Feige would be like

MrBatmor - 5/10/2014, 12:03 AM
Okay... This is ridiculous!!! Although neighbours was preety good... Never thought captain America would beat spidey!! The marketing cost has to be around 60 million at max... You can make a whole movie in 190 million!!
Bekss - 5/10/2014, 12:04 AM
190-for theaters
a 600 millions budget it's a lot for a movie that won't make more than 750.
There's a reason why they wanted 1 billion.
charlie2094 - 5/10/2014, 12:05 AM
Been looking forward to this for ages, and defended it before, but it was a complete mess of a film

Definitely not doing near as well as Sony expected, worse performing Spidey at the domestic, been progressively getting worse. They absolutely expected more, look how much they put in to it

Still doing very strong overseas, but has been out almost 3 weeks in many markets...should manage to do the same amount TASM1 did.

Solid numbers, but not for Spider-Man. Probably finish $700-$750
MrBatmor - 5/10/2014, 12:05 AM
@krune lol!!!... Marvel wont take avi arad back.... But ican totally picture him carrying coffee for Kevin...:P
MrBatmor - 5/10/2014, 12:06 AM
750 million in no way is a "disappointing" box office....
Bekss - 5/10/2014, 12:07 AM

the reports say the marketing cost 180-200 millions.
TheManFromMars - 5/10/2014, 12:08 AM
I enjoyed the movie but I thought the marketing was pretty shitty. Didn't like any of the posters.

I don't think I'm gonna watch it again until the DVD arrives.
Bekss - 5/10/2014, 12:09 AM
750 is a big dissapointment for a 600 millions budget. Not because it didn't lose money is a big success
grif - 5/10/2014, 12:09 AM
this is not at all surprising. ever since the first tb spiderman movie the us box office has dropped alot with every movie. the interest is just not there anymore. they say there will be 4 of these movies. it probably wont make it past 3.

i am pleased it is failing though. i hate this reboot series.
grif - 5/10/2014, 12:11 AM
next week godzilla after that x men after that maleficent. its over garfield.
TheManFromMars - 5/10/2014, 12:11 AM
Holy shit!

Grif wrote more than two sentences!
MrBatmor - 5/10/2014, 12:12 AM
@bekss Sony is a idiot I they put 200 million in marketing....wb/marvel studios /fox have put around 60-100 million in marketing...which in itself I preety high..
grif - 5/10/2014, 12:12 AM
Neighbors looks horrible. oz looks horrible
thebearjew - 5/10/2014, 12:13 AM
what r touvtalking about?? spideys always been a big box office draw
spidey 2 earned more than the first and spidey 3 earned more than the second

if your sequel doesnt make more than the previous film something is wrong
Luminus - 5/10/2014, 12:15 AM
@grif: The interest is obviously there. It's just that this movie was pure Banthashit and the word spread like a rampant STD.
MrBatmor - 5/10/2014, 12:16 AM
@grif neighbours is actually preety funny... If you liked the first hangover ..
Bekss - 5/10/2014, 12:17 AM
Avengers marketing- 100-120
MoS marketing- 140-160
ASM2 marketing-180-20
This are not just numbers that someone says.
I don't know how they get this numbers but they are "official"
sKeemAn - 5/10/2014, 12:19 AM
Too bad Spidey. Maybe they should try a new writer and director.
DEATHbyEXILE - 5/10/2014, 12:19 AM
sKeemAn - 5/10/2014, 12:21 AM
Its really not a good sign for the future of this franchise.
DEATHbyEXILE - 5/10/2014, 12:24 AM
m0th3r - 5/10/2014, 12:25 AM
Jez....we are talking a profit line of 750-800m...i dont think thats going to happen.

And i would like to point out..Sony NEEDS this. They were in dire straights not to long ago and have a crap ton of investment sunk into this franchise. Wouldnt it be funny if after all the pissing and moaning about FF..Marvel get chance to buy this back first..
Platinum - 5/10/2014, 12:26 AM

Hahaha. A well deserved defeat.
m0th3r - 5/10/2014, 12:26 AM
@grif yep, the next month is bang-bang-bang..Unless Xmen get MASSIVE word of mouth i expect 1 week runs for everyone for a while..
Starkasm - 5/10/2014, 12:26 AM
Garfield IS Spidey.
GA15 - 5/10/2014, 12:27 AM
wow poor spidey. got beat by seth and zac that got sting.
case - 5/10/2014, 12:29 AM
Haha exile - what the hell is that!?
m0th3r - 5/10/2014, 12:30 AM office Mojo says that ASM1 did 144 in first 7 days..this one 110...u-oh..and this was before this weekends drop was figured in...
ChrispyG - 5/10/2014, 12:37 AM
People saying it has a $600 million budget are ridiculous. THAT BEING SAID
Production budget is estimated at $250 million
Marketing is estimated at $185-$190 million

So in total, that is a good $440 million or more put into this beast. It would need a good $800 million worldwide to break even on that.

Right now it appears that it might struggle to hit $200 million in North America and $700 million globally. Not a train-wreck, but not what Sony was wanting. There were reports that some of their head honchos were expecting $1 Billion worldwide for this(Just like WB execs thought MOS could gross $1.2-$1.3 Billion)

But you can't just speak something like that into existence, you have to make a great [frick]ing movie. The Avengers is a great [frick]ing movie.

TASM2 is not the piece of dog feces some would make it out to be, but it is FAR from being a 'great [frick]ing movie', it is pretty good, at best.

Not being able to hold #1 for two weekends straight is noteworthy, and once Godzilla and X-Men get here...Spidey will be pretty quickly swept out of theaters....or at least stop pulling numbers of any real significance.
