TASM2: Dane DeHaan Discusses Darker Alternate Green Gobiln Transformation

TASM2: Dane DeHaan Discusses Darker Alternate Green Gobiln Transformation

While promoting Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, actor Dane Dehaan ("Chronicle") describes a much darker version of his Green Goblin transformation scene that was cut.

The Daily Beast recently chatted with Dane DeHaan about his new film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In the film, DeHaan plays Peter Parker's best buddy and uber rich, Harry Osborn. The son of Norman Osborn is afflicted with some sort of virus or disease that apparently gets passed down from generation to generation of Osborns. In the second half of the film, Harry has a dramatic transformation into the Green Goblin. DeHaan says that his villainous appearance could've looked much different and the transformation process was originally much darker in tone. Thanks to SevenWebHeads for the heads up, and if you don't feel like reading, check out his video below. Also, check out some cool promotional images of Spidey, which you can also find below.
“The first test we did was more cartoony,” DeHaan says, “but we wanted to bring it more into the organic, realistic world that Marc Webb created.” That means spiked hair mimics the shape of the purple hood. Jaundiced, splotchy skin subs for a full coat of green face paint.

And the costume is far more utilitarian, and not to mention modest, than the comic version’s booty shorts. And the transformation from Harry Osborn into the Green Goblin is undeniably one of the film’s more spectacular, if disturbing, sequences. Apparently, though, it could have been even darker. DeHaan says the version we see in the film is toned down from more graphic version they shot. “There was a shot of my teeth growing and then I shatter them,” he says, giddy with excitement. “And then there was my nails growing. Maybe we’ll see it in the director’s cut.”

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. The film will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx is Electro and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn. The Amazing Spider-Man sequel will swing into theaters May 2, 2014.

The idea was better! We put shit out, but trust me me had great ideas!
Galaxy - 5/7/2014, 5:04 PM
seriously, it seems like all the deleted scenes were better than what the movie had
TheRationalNerd - 5/7/2014, 5:07 PM
I just want to see him or Norman fully Goblin'd out in the threequel. :,)
GizmoEl - 5/7/2014, 5:08 PM
That looks pretty great, I wouldn't mind this being his final form of transformation. It'd be even cooler if Norman has fully transformed into this Goblin looking creature in the next movie.
TChalla - 5/7/2014, 5:09 PM
Can't wait to see the sinister 6! Maybe that film is a different Spidey in another universe?

To eventually set up a shattered dimensions flick?
SidDaAstroSloth - 5/7/2014, 5:10 PM
I loved his Gobby
ThrotTheUnclean - 5/7/2014, 5:12 PM
I cannot understand the dude talking in the first video at all. It took me a while to even be sure that he was speaking english.
Platinum - 5/7/2014, 5:13 PM
What a shitty Goblin LITERALLY, he looks like he has bird shit all over him.
ComicsBornAndBred - 5/7/2014, 5:13 PM
Dane Dehaan could give two poop about any of our opinions. He was a great green goblin.
ThrotTheUnclean - 5/7/2014, 5:16 PM
@ComicsBornAndBred Well, if this movie doesn't make enough money to warrant his appearance in a sequel he might care about what we think.

@OmegaDaGod I totally agree dude.
McNyagano - 5/7/2014, 5:16 PM
Harry snapping Gwen's neck was some dark shit:o I literally went HOLY SHIT!:o
GetsugaTensho22 - 5/7/2014, 5:17 PM
The Transformation scene was horrible. They used Flashing lights! That's the laziest and also the most obnoxious method to use!

Also, he looked like he smoked Radioactive Meth. There's a difference between "grounded"/ "realistic" and absolutely unoriginal.
Abary - 5/7/2014, 5:17 PM
His performance was good. That's it.
SuperCat - 5/7/2014, 5:17 PM
Transformation was disturbing? Yeah, right.
frenchboy - 5/7/2014, 5:20 PM
Dehane goblin was good and better than this awfull alternate version. You guys just want to criticize.
Platinum - 5/7/2014, 5:20 PM
That scene where where you hear him cackling at the power plant was straight up embarrassing especially when the Goblin persona wasn't built up at all.

I can see the production crew going "well he acts like this in the comics so fans will dig it."

Sigh. As a fan this was pretty offensive.
ThePowerCosmic - 5/7/2014, 5:21 PM

Me too brother! Slap In the face of CBMs.
McNyagano - 5/7/2014, 5:21 PM

Saw it back in March, scene was cut out amongst many other scenes like Goblin's attack in Oscorp were he's wiping people out. Very dark I might add.
DrDoom - 5/7/2014, 5:21 PM
Shit design. Shit movie.
ALegendaryPanda - 5/7/2014, 5:23 PM
I wish I could've seen the rough cut that McNyagano saw. It sounds way better!
ThePowerCosmic - 5/7/2014, 5:26 PM
I like how they talk like it had to be a realistic approach. As if anything about Electro was realistic. A man made of electricity that flies through the city. Smdh.

A straight translation if GG would have been better. Nothing about this film was believable so why apologize for the comic roots with this horrible redesign.

Awful film btw.
theowl - 5/7/2014, 5:27 PM
Dane dehaan's transformation was creepy.. I can't stand too see all those bones turning and twisting inside he's body.
TheRaven20 - 5/7/2014, 5:28 PM
"bring it more into the organic, realistic world that Marc Webb created"
Gve me a break. They had a giant lizard running around. I don't understand what is so hard about having him transfrom into a goblin that resembles the comics.
yossarian - 5/7/2014, 5:30 PM
You know what is actually great? Usually when a terrible CBM is released the studio has a ton of people make accounts on these type of websites to talk about how great the movie is. Clearly, they weren't even trying to convince us with that shit this time.
StarkReactor - 5/7/2014, 5:30 PM
@Omega..Very well put. I really don't mind changes at all, but it's all in the execution. I really didn't mind the overall look of the Goblin (one of the few things I liked about the movie), and Dane's performance was good, not great, but different. It was just so damned rushed. I would have preferred Electro or Rhino not in at all to give more time to Harry and the relationship with his father, and for that matter, it would have allowed more time to delve into Peter and Harry's friendship more. There was no real substance to any of these relationships.
SidDaAstroSloth - 5/7/2014, 5:31 PM
Have you seen it yet @yoss?
CaptainObvious - 5/7/2014, 5:35 PM
Is there anything from this movie that wasn't cut?
StarkReactor - 5/7/2014, 5:35 PM
Yoss, Ha! They probably just gave up! And you know what, I'm ok with that.
JamesMan - 5/7/2014, 5:36 PM
Maybe Dehaan's comment on a director's cut means we'll get one to improve on what I thought was a great Spidey movie. Doubt it, but hey I'm an optimist.
JamesMan - 5/7/2014, 5:37 PM
Spider-Man's greatest nemesis, the [frick]ing MPAA.
ALegendaryPanda - 5/7/2014, 5:38 PM
We better get a directors cut for this damn movie!!
yossarian - 5/7/2014, 5:39 PM
@Sid - I watched the first 36 minutes via download today and I don't care if I even watch it when it hits cable. I'm glad people liked it, that's cool, I'll never tell anyone what to like or dislike. But I couldn't even get past the first bit.
StarkReactor - 5/7/2014, 5:40 PM
@Spidermanthegreat If this is true, and these scenes were cut, it sounds like it would have developed Harry a bit more and made the movie much better. Maybe.
Ryguy88 - 5/7/2014, 5:41 PM
Not a shit movie, it was an average 3/5 star movie, just like most CBMs unfortunately.
LaserKing - 5/7/2014, 5:42 PM
The goblin get up....big thumbs down
JamesMan - 5/7/2014, 5:43 PM
This Harry/Goblin seemed more like a swapout with Ultimate Eddie Brock/Venom. He's an old friend of Peter's, who by the end of the story feels betrayed and uses what Peter told him not to use and transforms into a monster. I [frick]ing love that version of Venom so I loved what they did with Harry.

Ranger14 - 5/7/2014, 5:44 PM
We just got home from watching the matinee. 6 people in the theater. We both felt it was "meh". She asked what I felt about it overall and I said it had a hard time keeping my attention. She said, "I'm glad you said that because I almost fell asleep a couple times", and she really likes Spiderman movies and liked the TASM better than I did.

As far as Harry goes, I think he did a good job at playing the part, but if we have seen in all the Spiderman origin films how dot took him time to control and figure out his powers and both Electro and Harry learn their powers fairly easy (Harry learning to manipulate the sled so well the first time out??), it was a bit of a stretch for me.

I'll wait for a didn't article to talk more about what my disappointments were, but I thought the musical score/soundtrack was absolutely awful and really disconnected me from enjoying some of the scenes.
Jobu - 5/7/2014, 5:45 PM
Caught it yesterday while skipping work, it was gaping loose butthole.
