BOX OFFICE: MAN OF STEEL Takes Flight With An Incredible $56 Million Opening

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel topped the North American box office on Friday with an impressive $44 million, giving the reboot a current domestic total of $56.1 million when Thursday night's screenings are taken into account. Is Justice League now up, up and away? Read on for details!

Man of Steel is exceeding expectations, and despite some negative reviews from critics, its A- CinemaScore means that good word of mouth has put it well on its way to a $125 million weekend at this point. The Zack Snyder helmed and Christopher Nolan produced reboot took $44.1 million yesterday, giving it a total of $56.1 million thanks to Thursday's Walmart screenings. With a production budget of $225 million, it's essential that Man of Steel do well this weekend in order to ensure both a sequel and future DC superhero movies (especially after Green Lantern seriously underperformed for Warner Bros. back in 2011). However, it has already made close to $200 million from sponsors, and many analysts believe that it will soar past that same figure at the worldwide box office by the end of the weekend. Have you seen Man of Steel yet?

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent

JPLeezzy - 6/15/2013, 8:58 AM
I saw it yesterday and its tied with the avengers for me and has some of the best fight scenes you will ever see. Totally loved it and Im more of a marvel fan btw but this movie has me in groupie mode for dc right now. Thank you Zack Snyder!!!!!!!
Folchibas - 6/15/2013, 9:01 AM

jcfrommars9 - 6/15/2013, 9:03 AM

I'll believe it when I see it. ScreenRant had an article two years ago talking about Justice League, Flash & Wonder Woman Movies being confirmed with a Batman reboot.
Bodwulf - 6/15/2013, 9:03 AM
With the ending of Superman. Should we not be looking forward to the Justice Lord's movie?
kadetra - 6/15/2013, 9:04 AM
An A- cinemascore would guarantee a relatively strong legs.
HellsHammer - 6/15/2013, 9:04 AM
Best CBM to date in my opinion. I
Burkem6 - 6/15/2013, 9:04 AM
I saw it! the action was incredible, but to be fair WB/DC are the ones who put an 85mil prediction for the box office.I think the rest of the world had faith in SYnder/Nolan and CAvil.with the exception of certain haters who will remain nameless.
LEVITIKUZ - 6/15/2013, 9:05 AM
Batman reboot should just be an adaption of Arkham Asylum game. I mean the film would just be Die Hard with Batman. Who wouldn't want to see that?
PhoenixKing - 6/15/2013, 9:05 AM
Forget freaking Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 8.4/10 on IMDB. It is such an awesome movie!
ThePowerCosmic - 6/15/2013, 9:06 AM
Like it or not it is a weak film to build a cinematic Universe on. The Superman character is an icon and very well recognized which is why of course it will be somewhat successful.

You guys really didn't notice how flawed the CGI was or how bad the dialogue was? I haven't seen Visual effects that poorly done since the Raimi Spiderman films. Maybe general audiences didn't notice but I work in 3D animation.
jessepostal - 6/15/2013, 9:06 AM
Didn't think much of it. It felt like a two hour trailer, which hurt the story which also gave it no emotion or development. Micheal Shannon was bad and seemed like he was trying way too hard. Kinda felt the same with Russel Crow. Cavil was decent, so was Costner, Meloni and the girl who played Faora.

The action scenes were closer than a transformers movie, which made it a little hard to make certain things out at times, and why didn't Lois get sucked into the black whole? She kept falling yet everything underneath her was flying up? Lol movie magic!

HellsHammer - 6/15/2013, 9:07 AM
Your going to love it bud. Taking my girlfriend with me again. The movie has made her appreciate my love of comics and she has been researching all there is to know about Superman since we went to the Thursday show.
LEVITIKUZ - 6/15/2013, 9:07 AM

Take it from a Hellboy fan, if critics meant anything then we would have Hellboy 3. Critics don't pay to support and see the film, audiences do.
Locky - 6/15/2013, 9:07 AM
I went to see it yesterday with almost all my family... BEYOND EPIC!!! We were like BOOOM the action is very intense. If you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for? lol. Seriously go and see the movie.
jessepostal - 6/15/2013, 9:09 AM
@thepowercosmic, Exactly!
Indestruktible - 6/15/2013, 9:09 AM
Just came back from seeing it last night. I loved it! Sure, it wasn't perfect and I think the two biggest issues are pacing (due to flashback structure which I'm not a personal fan of) and not enough Lois development, but it was overall still very enjoyable :)

I give it a 8.5/10
Indestruktible - 6/15/2013, 9:10 AM
And yes, I'm definitely glad the public views it much differently than the snobby old generation critics. It currently sits at 8.4 on IMDB after 35,000 votes! Bring on JL!
kadetra - 6/15/2013, 9:12 AM
That imdb rating would probably drop significantly just like what happened to the avengers.
California - 6/15/2013, 9:12 AM
I saw it in 3D AND D-BOX! No one ever talks about seeing movies in DBOX on here. I guess you have to live in Martinez, CA to experience it.
jerryblake - 6/15/2013, 9:13 AM

really, you wanna go with Joker turning himself into big CGI monster ?

Let them adapt this Last Arkham instead. With Zsasz as the main villain.
Omarvls - 6/15/2013, 9:13 AM
NOW we can get the real battles going between
Marvel vs DC/WB who wins? I don't care I want to see ALL of them

Avengers 2 VS World's Finest
Dr.Strange vs Flash
Black Panther vs Wonder Woman
Planet Hulk vs MOS 2
Nova Corps vs Batman (Arkham Asylum)
Avengers 3 vs Justice League
GotG 2 vs Green Lantern Reboot
LEVITIKUZ - 6/15/2013, 9:13 AM
The only things I didn't like we're the pacing and all the destruction. I felt they over did it with the destruction but at the same time it opens the doors for Lex to rebuild the city in a sequel.
LEVITIKUZ - 6/15/2013, 9:14 AM

Look at Mandarin or Abomination. They may need to change that but I wouldn't mind. I loved the story in Asylum and as I said its Die Hard with Batman.
gambgel - 6/15/2013, 9:14 AM

whats its position on first day of all time?
LEVITIKUZ - 6/15/2013, 9:15 AM
Also Zsasz isn't a big enough villain to take on the main spotlight.
LEVITIKUZ - 6/15/2013, 9:17 AM

We are comparing a film that took 5 movies to hype up and one that is the fourth movie in the hero's journey to the first movie in a series? Seems a little unfair you know?
