David S. Goyer Recalls Being Hired For MAN OF STEEL, Says He's Seen The Movie

Confirming that he has seen the film, screenwriter David S. Goyer recalls being hired alongside with producer Christopher Nolan to work on Warner Bros.' highly anticipated Man Of Steel.

Speaking with Collider while promoting Starz's Da Vinci's Demons, David S. Goyer talks a little bit about Man Of Steel, for which he wrote the script. Warner Bros. screened the anticipated Superman reboot for a few people, and the reactions so far have been extremely positive. Goyer confirms that he was one of the few to watch it, and when asked if it was everything he hoped it'd be, he simply said, "Yes, yes. I was very happy."

Goyer also recalls getting the job. As we previously knew, he and Christopher Nolan brought the idea of a new Superman film to WB while working on The Dark Knight Rises, and now we know a little more as Goyer details what happened. "Chris (Nolan) and I were working on The Dark Knight Rises, working on the story; we were blocked. We agreed to part ways for a couple of weeks and just see if something had bubbled at the surface. So I went back to my home office. I was wasting time and procrastinating and took out an archive edition of some of the original Superman comic books, Action comic books and started rereading them because I couldn’t figure out this plot point on Dark Knight Rises, I just randomly sat down one afternoon and wrote up some ideas for Superman.

"When I met with Chris Nolan again in another week or so he said, “Have you worked out the problem on the Dark Knight Rises?” I said, “No,” he said, “What have you been doing?” and I said, “Well, I had this idea for Superman,” and because Chris likes to procrastinate as well he said “let’s hear it,” so I told him. And he literally called Jeff Robinov, who’s the head of Warner Bros, while I was sitting there and said, “Jeff, Dave just told me this take on Superman and you need to hear it, I’d like to produce it. Can we come in?” And we went in the next day. That’s how it happened. No, we weren’t trying to do it, it just happened."
Pretty cool, eh?

Man Of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne and Russell Crowe. The film is set to hit theaters June 14th.

Cool story! Love the old Action Comics. Can't wait to see this flick.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/25/2013, 2:32 PM
I loved TDKR, but it was obvious in the narrative the creative process wasn't as streamlined when compared to BB or TDK.

JorL5150 - 3/25/2013, 2:32 PM
as a superman fan- i HOPE to hell this is as epic and exciting as the so called early screening say.

WB fans have had along enough wait.
DanteSparda - 3/25/2013, 2:33 PM
What does procrastinating means? Sounds dirty and sweet
Ragnaroknroll - 3/25/2013, 2:33 PM
I'm actually quite surprised a Flash movie has never been made.

darkknightmare2012 - 3/25/2013, 2:44 PM
i think goyer gets a bad wrap for aliens 4 and ghost rider .. which i think is fair but hey every chick lays a turd every now and again instead of an egg .. i am hoping this movie will be legendary .. like superman deserves .. and like we deserve ..
darkknightmare2012 - 3/25/2013, 2:46 PM
as a kids i loved the old superman movies but becasue it was superman not becuase the movies were "good" .. and i really really wanted to love superman returns but i could not .. so i need this movie to be gold .. because lets face it if they f this one up then it could be a long long time before we get another superman movie ..

Superman can't lift an island, because it's physically impossible. The island would crumble at the point of pressure (his hands), since too much force would be localized at that point. He also can't lift a cruise liner the way he did in Returns, because again the point were his hands grabbed the boat would break off because of the weight. I just needed to get that out.
StrangerX - 3/25/2013, 2:52 PM
So basically Goyer and Nolan can do whatever the hell they want.

localman22 - 3/25/2013, 3:00 PM
I hope and pray that Man of Steel is the first really good Superman movie, with a real plot and decent writing. While Christopher Reeve's performance was great, other than him and some of the special effects, all of the other Superman films had astoundingly stupid plots and writing.

We know Zack Snyder knows how to do action. The change in the costume is minor. I would have preferred a villain other than Zod (or Lex), but if the story is good, then it is all good.
tonytony - 3/25/2013, 3:05 PM
Cannot wait for this. If this works then you know Flash and Jl would be on menu next.
Tony93 - 3/25/2013, 3:10 PM
@sephiroth YES! haha
TheSuperguy - 3/25/2013, 3:11 PM
Hopefully this inspires WB to take more chances on other super heroes, something I was hoping GL would do.
JULEZ13 - 3/25/2013, 3:13 PM
TDKR seemed like they didn't know where to go with it so that makes A LOT of sense. That movie was just a mess.

But cool story as to how MOS came about. Hopefully its great and not much like Nolan's Batman which shouldn't be since it seems like its mostly a brain-child of Goyer and not Nolan.
HellsHammer - 3/25/2013, 3:25 PM
Tell Nolan about you flash script!
DanteSparda - 3/25/2013, 3:25 PM

Agreed, most of the plot points of TDKR felt incredibly ridiculous or too similar to some of the previous two films, specially Begins.
rbfn04 - 3/25/2013, 3:32 PM
Took me a while but I finally realized my biggest problem wqith the colors. It's not that they are too dark. They are. But they are also washed out...
datNAMEtho - 3/25/2013, 3:33 PM
Goyer happy, me happy.
datNAMEtho - 3/25/2013, 3:33 PM
HHAHAHAHAHA LAUGHED MY frakking ass of that photo @sephiroth211
DCfan89 - 3/25/2013, 3:50 PM
wasn't that the point DanteSparda... TDKR was supposed to bring it full circle and to mirror begins.... Nolan said this several times..
CavEl - 3/25/2013, 3:52 PM
@ sephiroth211 - Dude, it should say "Bitch, please. I'm Superman."
DanteSparda - 3/25/2013, 4:00 PM

I don't see the point mirroring Batman Begins but making it more exaggerated and ridiculous, I still like a lot more Begins than Rises.

@LEVITIKUZ - 3/25/2013, 2:33 PM

Dear Goyer,

Your friend,

Problem is, Goyer's movie was reportedly this very trippy epic involving the whole of the Flash legacy and the Speed Force and, on top of allegedly featuring Jay Garrick, it focussed on both Barry and Wally (I think with an emphasis on Wally as Barry's return was still awhile away).

At this point, Wally is a non-entity in the DCU and will only be remembered by actual comic readers and the fans who watched JL/JLU. Doesn't really serve brand synergy to push a version of The Flash that's no longer relevant in the DCU (and I don't think Goyer has any intention of rewriting it to serve the new status quo).
CavEl - 3/25/2013, 4:10 PM
@ DanteSparda - I guess you hated it when Star Wars episode 6 did that...or was that okay?

Fornication - 3/25/2013, 4:12 PM
"he literally called Jeff Robinov, who’s the head of Warner Bros, while I was sitting there and said, 'Jeff, Dave just told me this take on Superman and you need to hear it, I’d like to produce it'"

That's how powerful Nolan is inside Warner Bros. Studios.
DCfan89 - 3/25/2013, 4:12 PM

i respect your opinion. i feel like it was ingenious and really gave the feel of an overall story that fit together.. it made sense for me. one of my favorite movies of all time. the conclusive film of most trilogies mirror the first in some form or fashion. the plot for most trilogies stem from something in the first film.
DCfan89 - 3/25/2013, 4:13 PM
the plot for the last film that is
