Hans Zimmer Focused On MAN OF STEEL Sounding Different From His Batman Scores

After completing his work on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises composer Hans Zimmer immediately began working on the score to Zack Snyder's new Superman film, Man of Steel.

Perhaps one of the hardest jobs of any composers is trying to write a new score for a Superman film when you know in the back of your mind that Oscar-winning composer John Williams knocked it out the park. Heck Williams knocked it out of the universe. To imagine Supes swooping into action without that iconic theme is almost unthinkable. When Bryan Singer's ill fated Superman Returns came out several years ago composer John Ottman tried to keep much of John Williams sound and only slightly altered it to add his own flare to it.

Now Hans Zimmer has the difficult task, but he might be the perfect composer as he has already proven he can take on a memorable theme. When he composed Chis Nolan Batman Begins many wondered if he would incorporate Danny Elfman's Batman theme, but he didn't. Zimmer came up with a sound that was completely different from Elfman's, perfect for Nolan's film. Danny Graydon caught up with the composer.

”Let’s be honest – I am only human and John Williams is super-human. That Superman theme is beloved and iconic. It’s a pretty hard act to follow and it’s like me saying to you can you turn this interview in to a decent piece of Shakespeare. You’ll say “Maybe not today…!”

Before Hans Zimmer came on board as the composer of Man of Steel there were inaccurate rumors saying that he already had the job, but at that time he hadn't even met Zack Snyder. Oddly enough it's those rumor that helped to create a dialogue between he and Snyder. He called Zack to snuff out the rumors, and this lead the two of them into a discussion about Superman. Hans then told Warner Bros. and Nolan that he wouldn't discuss the matter until he finished The Dark Knight Rises. After completing that score he waited a whole fifteen minutes to begin work on Man of Steel.

“I don’t feel confident at all. I never feel confident. But, a little bit of fear has gone a long way to being inspiring in the past. John Williams is the master and I am not even going to try and go in that direction. I’ll try my best not to embarrass myself and my colleagues on the film. I’m definitely going to have a go! In a funny way, it’s exactly because Superman is such an opposite character to Batman that I am welcoming the opportunity to do the music.”

Has he seen footage from the film? “Yes. All you’re going to get out of me is a “yes”! No elaborations! I’ve started it and am in the ideas phase. I am driving people crazy with my experiments and am trying to write a tune.” The one thing Zimmer will say is that his signature use of percussion – which he jokingly refers to as “his endless quest for the perfect drum-hit” will not be as prevalent in MAN OF STEEL as on his Batman scores. “I am going to try and avoid it. It’s a big conversation I am having with myself right now: how can we avoid that…!!“

Thanks to the heads up from Superman: Man of Steel (2013)

Man Of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne with Christopher Meloni and Harry Lennix, the reboot is slated for theaters June 14th, 2013!

thats good, his scores can sound different if he trys, after all he did the score to the simpsons movie
superotherside - 7/11/2012, 11:00 AM
Awesome. Glad he's going a different direction, hopefully he'll do a better score than TASM did to make it different from the original trilogy's score. Not that it was bad though, just wasn't quite as good as the original's score, in the main theme at least.
npkuiper - 7/11/2012, 11:27 AM
Aside from most of you, I'm not a Hans Zimmer fan...I think he relies too much on fabricated sounds and most of his scores sound the same. YOU CANNOT IMPROVE THE SUPERMAN THEME---it's an impossibility. It's so iconic it doesn't need to be changed.

Don't care about the music. Just make a good script please.
JULEZ13 - 7/11/2012, 11:30 AM
This is the nest news I've heard all day! I'm glad he understands that Superman's theme must be the exact opposite of that of Batman's.

I'm not all goo-goo-gaga over his Batman theme. It's okay, but I do love his work on the Lion King, now that was an amazing piece of art!

I can't wait to see what he comes up with!
cap1941 - 7/11/2012, 11:37 AM
There is no way, no how he can top John Williams original. I don't think the whole movie should be model on the Williams scores but to me it wouldn't hurt to use it in some form in the begin or the end. Also to me Zimmer is a fine composer but he doesn't have that stand out blow me out of the water piece of music that will be remember in the years to come yet, like Williams has for Star Wars,Indiana Jones and Superman. Just hope he can do Superman justice. Because the Superman theme should be inspiring and up lifting and not dark, like it should be for Batman.

That SUPERMAN theame is the Most perfect theame EVER!!

So if anyone can make ANOTHER perfect theame for such a Great character; it's Hans ZIMMER!

I LOVE that John Williams theame!
But everything must come to an end!
It's not the End for that for sure! But certainly time for new one!
Hopefully, as huge Superman (& ZIMMER fan) I hope hope HOPE, he creates a GREAT GREAT THEAME!
& I'm sure he can!!

the score for superman will be more uplifting, rather then the darkness of batman, l'm sure a dark track will be made for general zod but l fully expect a positive score like some of the tracks on inception like mombasa or dream is collapsing.

The score of man of steel is in a way more harder then the movie cos everyone if they are a superman fan or not knows the superman theme tune.
Stumblin - 7/11/2012, 11:51 AM
Thank god they're not using the same old score. Best idea yet.
Ha1frican - 7/11/2012, 11:53 AM
Im really excited for this. Inception has one of the best scores in film history IMO and TDKR sounds almost as good from what i heard in the 13 minute featurette.
Oxbow - 7/11/2012, 11:53 AM
I love superman, no need to be a slave to the orginal score. You can make something that new and old generations will connect to.

Can I just say, that I am in nerd heat right now waiting for this movie to get a trailer!

RamonSuarez - 7/11/2012, 11:58 AM
Great. So Zimmer will rip off another composer's work to create another sound.
SageMode - 7/11/2012, 11:59 AM
I really hope Snyder doesn't screw this film up. His last couple of films been pretty meh
SkateandDestroy88 - 7/11/2012, 12:00 PM
Hell Yeah. I'm sure it will be sick. I've really enjoyed watching the credits for BB and the DK since(been watching/listening to those movies on repeat in anticipation.) The scores are fantastic. John Williams is Super Human composer no doubt but I'm sure Zimmer will deliver.
Learned Star Wars Theme and Indiana Jones March. Still gotta get music for Imperial March. i think that's in G minor.
SkateandDestroy88 - 7/11/2012, 12:04 PM
Captain America had really good music. Probably the best credits music I've ever listened to while tripping balls off acid. The man with a plan. Mhahahaha
Jer3miah - 7/11/2012, 12:05 PM
Guy is awesome. My favorite composer by far. I have no doubts.

CrimsonReign - 7/11/2012, 12:07 PM
I loved the Williams' score back in the day but that is now over. It is time to move forward and completely break with the past Superman films. I love Zimmer's work on True Romance and Pirates of the Caribbean, so I think he will do great on this and blow everyone away.
TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 7/11/2012, 12:12 PM
im really curious to see how this score sounds

@UrbanKnight couldn't have said it better myself.

15 minutes sounds like an awful lot of time !!!
CaptainObvious - 7/11/2012, 12:36 PM
@RamonSuarez- No. You're thinking of James Horner.
SkateandDestroy88 - 7/11/2012, 12:50 PM
@ Seejay Thanks man that really made my day and brought back a lot memories. me and my brother watched those movies so many time when we where kids. That is some brilliant music.
SkateandDestroy88 - 7/11/2012, 12:52 PM
A lot of people grew up on those movies and they seem pretty cheesy now but at the time they were the sh#t. Man of Steel will own !!!!!!
Chilenator - 7/11/2012, 1:37 PM
when are we going to have real news about this film?? let's say a trailer, posters, new pics or any decent info about it?
datNAMEtho - 7/11/2012, 1:43 PM
He knows this sh!t. Trust him.
Masterkalel - 7/11/2012, 1:47 PM
Superman Rock !!
PersonaPostOvo - 7/11/2012, 1:57 PM
He really borrowed elements from the 90's Batman cartoon

lets hope he does the same with this

PersonaPostOvo - 7/11/2012, 1:58 PM
Or this

PersonaPostOvo - 7/11/2012, 2:01 PM
Or even this!!!!

Jollem - 7/11/2012, 2:19 PM
i liked the superman movies when i was a kid. if you're gonna compare them to movies nowadays, that's pretty low
AnditsOn1 - 7/11/2012, 2:39 PM
Jollem, you are awefully wrong. That superman tone in the original superman movies is so classic that even today majority of people still remember it and love it to their hearts. That said, definitely not so many movies' score can do that.
