MAN OF STEEL Snubbed In Academy Awards' "Visual Effects" Shortlist

MAN OF STEEL Snubbed In Academy Awards' "Visual Effects" Shortlist

While Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World have made the cut, Man of Steel is noticeably absent in the list of ten films which are now in the running for a place in the "Visual Effects" category for the 86th Oscars. Hit the jump to find out which other movies are on the shortlist!

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 86th Oscars®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”
“Iron Man 3”
“The Lone Ranger”
“Star Trek Into Darkness”
“Thor: The Dark World”
“Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim”
“World War Z”

The Academy's Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Thursday, January 9, 2014. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

Oscars nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Whatever faults I had with Man of Steel, I personally think that its exclusion here is shameful. While many other CGI heavy movies also failed to make the cut - Ender's Game and Fast & Furious 6 for example - Zack Snyder's Superman reboot was visually stunning, and easily as good (if not better) than many of those listed above. What do you guys think? Sound off below!

bazinga85 - 12/5/2013, 6:46 PM
The MoS VFX were better than a lot of these(WWZ, really?) Gravity trumps them all though
JoeMomma29 - 12/5/2013, 6:46 PM
@ Supercat

Most critics snubbed the film what do you expect.
XelCorp - 12/5/2013, 6:46 PM
I thought Man of steel was visually stunning.. but this is a damn shawg
BackwardGalaxy - 12/5/2013, 6:46 PM
I hated MoS, and even I didn't have anything bad to say about the visual effects.
ALegendaryPanda - 12/5/2013, 6:47 PM
Absolute bullshit. Man of Steel deserved at least a nomination. Lone Ranger? Really? Really now?
Smarfi - 12/5/2013, 6:48 PM

brickarts295 - 12/5/2013, 6:48 PM
I can forgive Lone Ranger but World War Z? Da [frick]?! Well here's hoping Gravity takes the Gold.
ALegendaryPanda - 12/5/2013, 6:48 PM
That being said, Gravity deserves to win.
HugoStrange87 - 12/5/2013, 6:49 PM
The academy is full of narrow minded liberals. I could care less.
SuperCat - 12/5/2013, 6:49 PM
@ Joe

You're right. Who the hell even saw "The Lone Ranger?"
Spidey91 - 12/5/2013, 6:50 PM
my money's on Pacific Rim...but Gravity is probably going to win.
XelCorp - 12/5/2013, 6:50 PM
@Smarfi- his first flight scene was pretty amazing, this is complete bs.. It shoul have made it. I honestly think it didn't make it for other reasons..
PsychoManiacJacky - 12/5/2013, 6:50 PM
Even The Academy Awards knows Lone Ranger is better than that Crap of Steel.
TheWolverine08 - 12/5/2013, 6:51 PM

The 2014 Jeep Cherokees are weak ass rav 4s. Fvck Jeep.
AlexLaChiusa - 12/5/2013, 6:51 PM
Gravity deserves to win.
ChrispyG - 12/5/2013, 6:52 PM
It wasn't snubbed. Man of Steel was great, but it does not deserve to be in contention for Best Visual Effects of the year, it's effects were a tad bit obvious.

I mean, miles ahead of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer, but not on par with films like Iron Man 3 and Pacific Rim.

But in all honesty, Man of Steel probably deserved a nomination more than World War Z. So in a sense it did kind of get snubbed.
Christ - 12/5/2013, 6:52 PM
The way the critics reacted, there's no way Gravity doesn't win.
113 - 12/5/2013, 6:55 PM
Not even a nomination? Fail fail fail.
Prime - 12/5/2013, 6:56 PM
Gravity should and will win, but MOS should have been nominated. [frick] you academy awards.
MrReese - 12/5/2013, 6:56 PM
Supes cape was CGI (If I'm not mistaken) & that shit looked beautiful!
JediSuperGuy83 - 12/5/2013, 6:57 PM
Man Of Steel had the best everything it was the best of this year
feedonatreefrog - 12/5/2013, 6:57 PM
I loved Man of Steel

but the CG was uneven.

At times it was perfect (Krypton)

at other times it was embarrassingly bad for 2013 (Smallville fight)
feedonatreefrog - 12/5/2013, 6:58 PM
And Gravity deserves to win, without a doubt.
SageMode - 12/5/2013, 6:58 PM
MrReese - 12/5/2013, 6:58 PM
Krypton & Asgard looked bad ass.
Prime - 12/5/2013, 6:58 PM
Iron Man 3? Really.....LONE RANGER? Now I know it's on purpose. [frick]ing critics.
Ocelot - 12/5/2013, 7:01 PM
Doesn't really matter if Man of Steel was nominated or not, we all know the award is going to Gravity. LOL @ World War Z being on the list.
TheFox - 12/5/2013, 7:02 PM
F%$#ING WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Man of Steel had FAR more impressive effects than EITHER of those films!

Well, except for the preponderance of CGI stunt doubles given close-ups. But SERIOUSLY, that is bullsh*t! Lone Ranger was a crock of awful!

Aw, well. That's karma for Warner Bros. ditching all creative integrity and whoring out the Man of Steel sequel as a Justice League launching pad.

JediSuperGuy83 - 12/5/2013, 7:03 PM
Gravitys effects were basically a space documentary LAME
ALmazing - 12/5/2013, 7:04 PM
Gravity will win. It was an experience that wasn't just visual. Pretty ground breaking I feel.
CASH - 12/5/2013, 7:04 PM
Wow.... So Zods entire suit was cgi the whole movie and they don't even get a Nom? TF?
