Max Landis' Death & Return Of Superman Pitch Is More Entertaining Than MAN OF STEEL

Max Landis' Death & Return Of Superman Pitch Is More Entertaining Than MAN OF STEEL

Earlier this year, Max Landis ("Chronicle") was approached by DC Comics to work on a weekly year-long series, with Greg Pak, that would've rebooted The Death & Return Of Superman. Even though it never materialized, Max has posted a video detailing his plan.

Max Landis is one of those people that you either love, or you hate. And I must confess, that at one point in the not so distant past, I found him to be rather annoying. But, the more I hear from him, the more I like. He wears his geekiness on his sleeve, and always presents his comic-based ideas with an enthusiasm that is as contagious as MEV-1.

So, do you have forty-two minutes to spare? If that's a no, it's unacceptable. Make time. As you'll remember, this super-nerd, who also wrote Chronicle, became a YouTube sensation when he created a star-studded, low-budget recap of "The Death of Superman." So, fire up the popcorn, and enjoy!

CHRONICLE - 2012 American science fiction film directed by Josh Trank, and written by Max Landis, based on a story by both. Three Seattle high-school seniors, bullied Andrew (Dane DeHaan), his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) and more popular Steve (Michael B. Jordan) form a bond after gaining telekinetic abilities from an unknown object. They first use their abilities for mischief and personal gain, until Andrew turns to darker purposes.

Wallymelon - 7/24/2013, 2:19 AM
this is coming from a guy who absolutely hates superman, but this shit sounds amazing. i really would love to see this movie.
Platinum - 7/24/2013, 2:21 AM
I love me some Chronicle and I totally trust this guy, they should put that Superman/Batman shit on hold and do this instead.
8thPassenger - 7/24/2013, 2:22 AM
watch his "Regarding Clark" video. He doesn't hate Superman. He loves him.
Pitviper23 - 7/24/2013, 2:26 AM
Seems like a lot and I mean a lot of Woulda Shoulda Coulda. Fact of the matter is this, he was given a crack and for whatever reason, people always have excuses, he failed. end of story.
SuperSam - 7/24/2013, 2:27 AM
Wow more than 40 minutes! The guy is really passionate and I would love to see his take on Superman.
8thPassenger - 7/24/2013, 2:29 AM
Ah, figured he was just referring to the "you don't care about superman even if you think you do" quote.
harley2011 - 7/24/2013, 2:32 AM
This dumbass, is not worthy to be doing anything related the Man of steel.
MightyZeus - 7/24/2013, 2:33 AM
That's his own opinion. Do i respect his opinion and himself, no.

RorMachine - 7/24/2013, 2:35 AM
I'm torn between finding him really annoying but knowing deep down how damn talented he is.
ryan55 - 7/24/2013, 2:39 AM
Didn't this guy say in an interview how he hated the destruction of the city meanwhile he says he would have metropolis on fire in this interview.
Emjeed - 7/24/2013, 2:47 AM
I don't like Max Landis by any means. But i really loved Act one of his story and think the rest was pretty good too! bummer he wasn't able to do it
JakeMurdock89 - 7/24/2013, 2:50 AM
Man of Steel was EXACTLY the Superman film we needed.
Emjeed - 7/24/2013, 2:55 AM
@Nail.. Personally,I think the MOS metropolis destruction served its purpose as well. Most of it occurred during the black zero attack. Whatever occurred during the one on one fight with Zod wasn't as destructive as many make it out to be. Though Max's version of the moments leading up to Superman taking a life was very touching. The flash back to the cow and all that. Something like that, I think would have sold Zod's killing better to those who had an issue with it (I didn't.. I loved MOS)
Platinum - 7/24/2013, 3:15 AM
The guy is right about the Super in Superhero taking over.
xcrementus - 7/24/2013, 3:18 AM
This story sounds so kickass. This pitch should have been Superman: Earth One.

I loved how he worked so many elements into the story so effortlessly, easily enough material for 2 movies worth of story.

I'd love to see his concepts for Dr Strange, and really work out some rules for magic onscreen.
xcrementus - 7/24/2013, 3:21 AM
@mantinium: he was anti destruction porn because CLark should have done more to prevent the loss of life.

In this story, Superman is stuck in the Phantom Zone and can't do anything about it.

Also he needed a big enough impact to attract pretty much every hero in the country to help out.
ryan55 - 7/24/2013, 3:34 AM
And he said he likes it to be more about the character and his idea doesn't really seem like its more about superman it feels like its more about doomsday and the story, I would say Man OF Steel is more about superman then this idea. And he even says in his movie that superman is the casue of this destruction and its worse then Hiroshima, meanwhile in his other interview he says he thought it was ridiculous in Man Of Steel.I don't know why he didn't like Man Of Steel that much Maybe he is just jealous because he wanted to direct it.
AmazingFantasy - 7/24/2013, 3:36 AM
Bit bias title dontcha think
ryan55 - 7/24/2013, 3:37 AM
nailbiter111 Did you watch the video before commenting, in his video the destruction dosent make sense Doomsdays just destroying the city for no reason and in Man Of Steel they had a reason to make earth there planet.
iordanisp - 7/24/2013, 3:41 AM
Great story better than man of steel really top class story telling
ryan55 - 7/24/2013, 3:41 AM
Most of the things he complained about in that Man of Steel interview happened in his movie to.
ryan55 - 7/24/2013, 3:42 AM
Some things sounded way over the top but it does sound cool.
bubba27 - 7/24/2013, 3:43 AM
This guy's a major douche and his story has good parts but overall I'm not a fan. And yeah this was not more entertaining than MOS
GoldenMan - 7/24/2013, 3:44 AM
Those ideas of brutality toward all the superheroes and the supposed imagery on Metropolis aflame was really quite scary to think about...
He's still way too far up his own ass though ;P
ryan55 - 7/24/2013, 3:47 AM
Yea he shouldn't go out and say that Man Of Steel was ridiculous and he should have stopped the destruction when in his movie there is destruction that is way worse.
CPBuff22 - 7/24/2013, 3:52 AM
I firmly believe that a Justice League Movie should be built out of the Doomsday and the Death of Superman. The heroes come together to fight Doomsday and Superman apparently dies at the end. We see a Justice League movie that shows everyone come together to defend a world with no Superman. After credit scene, Superman's tomb is empty. Then the Return of Superman movie. It makes so much sense.
rebellion - 7/24/2013, 3:53 AM
its very easy to bitch about how awesome your concept is. still, final product could've sucked. this scarecrow can go jump off a cliff.
ViperXX79 - 7/24/2013, 4:00 AM

It's funny that you don't seem to understand the difference between the destruction. Landis doesn't like destruction for the sake of destruction like in MoS. It needs a purpose. That's why he said he gets it in those Emmerich films. Those movies are about destruction. The superhero movies aren't about destruction. In MoS Superman could of stopped all of those people being killed. A good interpretation of Superman would of taken the battle somewhere else or put an end to it real quick. In Landis' version Superman was trapped in the Phantom Zone and couldn't stop Doomsday...yet. Please try to keep up.

Anyway this would of made for a great movie and the start of a Justice League series instead of the crap we got in MoS and a thrown together Superman and Batman team up we might get.
MrSundayMovies - 7/24/2013, 4:20 AM
I loved that.

"Superman takes part in two of the largest disaster scenes I've ever seen in a movie. And I'm not talking about like, [Mock bitch voice]"Oh what about Day after Tomorrow? what about Independence Day?[/Mock bitch voice] Those are movies that are based around disaster scenes. I go, into a movie, like "2012", to see a City be destroyed. You know where a City shouldn't be being destroyed? IN THE [frick]ING SUPERMAN MOVIE.... Superman shouldn't be allowing that to happen."-Max Landis

"So we open and almost all of Metropolis is on fire. There are dead bodies, EVERYWHERE. The downtown section of Metropolis, Manhattan, New Troy is, EVISCERATED! There are holes through buildings, buildings are leaning against each other, there are flipped Military vehicles everywhere, and we pan in past a crashed Batwing. The Blue Beetle ship has been torn in half. We see Wonder Woman's lasso ripped to shreds. We see people dead everywhere. A first aide truck rumbling through the City. They're going through the City after basically the biggest disaster that's happened since the Tsunami's in Japan, since like, Hiroshima. Everything's' destroyed.

Everyone's dead. He's looking at like 17,000 corpses.

DOOMSDAY! 10 Feet of raw destructive energy.... he's eating people alive... he's tearing them in half!"
-Max Landis

Narcissistic, self-blowing, douches will contradict themselves.

"I'm so amused by my own bullshit"- Max Landis
casanovagunny - 7/24/2013, 4:27 AM
One word: garbage. Couldn't watch anymore. Stopped watching at 3 minutes.
StrangerX - 7/24/2013, 4:28 AM
@emjeed I'm glad your not the only one that noticed the destruction was mostly done before the Superman Zod fight. Its like fans forgot about the world engine, and the fact it also caused many of the jet Missle to misfire into the crowd, and buildings. The destruction caused by Superman was nothing compared to what the military did. I'm also not that big of a landis fan. Chronicle was just, and many fans hype it up to be something its not.
KingSilence - 7/24/2013, 4:32 AM
How is this guy not known as the most famous comic book movie writer of all time? I WANT THIS MOVIE SO BAD!
kong - 7/24/2013, 4:33 AM
[frick] a comic, get this dude to do the MOVIE!!!
Brainiac13 - 7/24/2013, 5:00 AM
And he called MOS destruction too much! SMH!!!

His ideas are good......but man does he contradict his last video!!!

Anyway....would love to see this in a year long story!
nikgrid - 7/24/2013, 5:07 AM
@viper - First off I don't mind Max and his rants, I think they're damned entertaining, although a lot of what happened in his story happened in a round a bout way)

A lot of people are saying destruction for the sake of destruction...that's bullshit. Look (A lot of people) want our comics to be more grown up, than they were in the 70's and 80's and modern CBM's ARE REFLECTING THIS! Especially the Dark Knight Trilogy and MOS, because Nolan and Snyder and Goyer are interested in making Batman, Superman what have you, more than just 2 dimensional characters...I for one applaud this! Now in MOS the fights were not like Superman animated where he gets knocked through a building and creates a neat hole and flys through the other side. Structural supports get destroyed retaining walls fall and buildings collapse, as for Superman in a more realistic world he is too busy getting the shit kicked out of him by what is effectively a Special Forces Soldier, the pain and physical damage is equal to that of a human SAS guy beating the shit out of a human newspaper reporter.

MOS Damage was not for damages was what happens when two Kryptonians throw down in a city. It was justified. As for what Supes did at the end, well that was "death by cop". And I'm sure Luthor and Bruce Wayne will show keen interest in that in the sequel.
Greengo - 7/24/2013, 5:18 AM
To Landis:

"I know your works. You are neither cold nor hot. So because you are lukewarm, I will spew you out of my mouth."
