McG Looks Back With Regret On His Failed SUPERMAN Adaptation Starring Henry Cavill

The director looks back at Superman: Flyby, the adaptation which failed to take off before Warner Bros. handed the project to Bryan Singer. He expresses regret at not being able to work with Henry Cavill and briefly shares his thoughts on the actor starring in Man of Steel.

Back in 2002, director Brett Ratner signed up to helm the J.J. Abrams-penned Superman: Flyby for Warner Bros. However, he eventually walked away from the project and was later replaced by McG who screen tested Jason Behr, Jared Padalecki, Michael Cassidy and Henry Cavill (who was of course chosen by director Zack Snyder for 2013's Man of Steel) to play Superman. Several other actors were also said to be in talks and it was recently revealed that Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. was considered for the role of Lex Luthor. However, the project ultimately fell apart despite J.J. Abrams' requests to direct his script and the studio ultimately replaced McG with Bryan Singer in 2004. Talking to Digital Spy recently, the This Means War director looked back at his failed adaptation and his regret at not being able to helm the movie which would have also starred Henry Cavill as Clark Kent.

"I did indeed cast Henry Cavill [as Superman]. He's a fantastic actor, he's very, very strong and he's wonderful. I think Zack Snyder's going to do a great job with Henry Cavill. I can't wait to see that picture."

"I'm heartbroken that I never made my Superman, but it was my own fuck-up because I was afraid of flying and couldn't get down to Australia. I got properly thrown off that picture, sacked for being a mental case! You live and learn, you keep on truckin'."

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent
Michael Shannon as Zod

I wouldn't trust Superman with this guy, hell I would even trust him with a TV commercial.
SeaSerpentine - 2/27/2012, 11:05 AM
It was for the best it didn't happen, much like "Superman Lives".
LP4 - 2/27/2012, 11:05 AM
MCG is a moron, he actually lost the chance to make a SUPERMAN film due to him being too afraid to go on a plane?

LMAO ok...

McG just wants attention.
95 - 2/27/2012, 11:05 AM
Would of been better than Bryan Singer I think.

Getting Zack Snyder worked out in the end.
RorMachine - 2/27/2012, 11:07 AM
I have never been happier to hear of someone having aviophobia in my life.
G - 2/27/2012, 11:18 AM
If you want to direct a Superman movie, you can't be afraid of flying. Talk about a bad omen.
tazmaniak - 2/27/2012, 11:24 AM
Wasn't Cavill a bit young to be cast as Superman back then?McG was hired in 2002 to make his proposed movie, but Singer was hired in 2004, so that film would have been in development between those years.Cavill was only born in 1983, and would have been barely 20/21 when he auditioned for the part.

It's just interesting that the same actor was cast to play Superman in origin movies 10 years apart.
Maia87 - 2/27/2012, 11:28 AM
Terminator Salvation was a terrible movie.

@tazmaniak - Kate Bosworth was only 22 in "Returns".
MovieMann - 2/27/2012, 11:35 AM
You know your movie is going to be shit when you name it someting like "Superman: Flyby"
Supersonicboobs - 2/27/2012, 11:41 AM
So he's the Douche who was afraid of Flying!...well he should name it- superman the Ground version.
glad this never came to be...and we got Nolan,Goyer,Synder and Weta!
i dont kno who's more lame Singer or this fool!
GrayFox1025 - 2/27/2012, 11:55 AM
"Superman: Flying is no Longer the Safest Way to Travel"
Shredder - 2/27/2012, 11:57 AM
"Flyby" was simply a working title.

You know, like "Intimidation Game" being the working title for Batman Begins.

Of course "Flyby" was never going to end up with that as the actual title of the movie. That's hilarious!
Talontd - 2/27/2012, 12:06 PM
NO ONE has said the title of the film was Superman: Flyby, FLYBY was just the production title...for example:

Star Wars Episode IV.........called BLUE HARVEST
TDK...................called RORY'S FIRST KISS
TDKR................called MAGNUS REX

....stop making such a big deal out of nothing.....twits.
Talontd - 2/27/2012, 12:06 PM

Damn u beat me to it!!!
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/27/2012, 12:07 PM
It worked out for the best, we had superman returns a tribute superman film that lack action but a good tribute film. Now we have man of steel directed by zack synder. Zack F'in Synder and you have goyer as the writer and Nolan as the executive producer. What more do you want??? This worked out better and with them done filming but just now editing and fixing up the special effects. Wow there taking there time but when it's out it will be the superman movie that everyone is waiting for. A superman movie that is modern and for the new generation to enjoy.
thedudeabides - 2/27/2012, 12:18 PM
Hahaha, Sam Winchester lost out for Superman and Dean Winchester lost out for Captain America? Classic...
FoxForce5 - 2/27/2012, 12:28 PM
I see McG in much the same light as Michael Bay. Things like characters, story and logic are always a bit questionable but the action and effects usually looks real good. And with a script from J.J. Abrams, I'd have taken this over Superman Returns any day of the week. Still, the real hope for Kal El lies in Man of Steel.
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 2/27/2012, 12:45 PM
@ Shredder & Talontd - you two must be a pair of sexy mofo's! Took the words right out of my mouth. A script title is NOT the title of the movie, some people have mouths faster than their brains!
Diomedes - 2/27/2012, 12:53 PM
lol after getting movies with names like 'cowboys and aliens' and 'ballistic: ecks vs sever' and 'eight legged freaks' superman:flyby is shakespeare in comparison...
theomegasanction - 2/27/2012, 12:57 PM
agree with foxforce5. Superman Returns was horrible and I would have much rather seen a movie from anyone besides Singer. His run with the xmen movies was tolerable. I can rewatch almost any comic book movie but Returns is one of the few I'm trying to forget. And who the f thought it was good to get a girl who looks fresh out of high school to play a woman who is a veteran reporter with some years to her credit? I loved Watchmen and 300 so I'm pretty pumped to see what Snyder can do with Superman!
Tainted87 - 2/27/2012, 1:09 PM
Would Superman have walked then? Perhaps he'd lose the suit and just run around as Clark Kent all day long.

Maybe he should have directed an episode of Smallville, lol.
rbfn04 - 2/27/2012, 1:11 PM
Well, we would've gotten a shitty costume earlier than we will get with MoS.

Was McGee's the one where Lex was kryptonian? So many failed scripts i can't keep count anymore...
Supes17 - 2/27/2012, 1:13 PM
He wanted to make Superman,
but he's afraid of flying

AC1 - 2/27/2012, 1:18 PM
@Maia87 yeah, and Kate Bosworth was one of the worst things about Superman Returns, she was too young to be believable as an intrepid reporter like Lois Lane, and even though she had some of the sass of the character, she just seemed way to innocent and cutesy, and not feisty enough. Not a bad movie, but not a particularly good one either. It's the third best Superman film so far (behind Superman and Superman II).
Hopefully, Man of Steel will bring Superman into the 21st Century and give him the movie he deserves!
Tainted87 - 2/27/2012, 1:22 PM
Like trying to make an Aquaman movie but being afraid of water... or trying to make a Wonder Woman movie while being afraid of women and heaving bosoms.

SpiderFan35 - 2/27/2012, 1:36 PM
Easy fix, just knock him out like on the A-team lol.

thedude2936 - 2/27/2012, 1:58 PM
man, its a good thing this didn't get made, the story sounded off when i originally heard the synopsis of it years ago.
GreyChaos13Zero - 2/27/2012, 3:13 PM
isn't this movie done filming yet, we need a trailer?)
nld3 - 2/27/2012, 4:49 PM
Why didn't he take a boat? I would have gotten there someway for that gig!
titansupes - 2/27/2012, 5:25 PM
Wait...THAT'S how you pronounce 'Cavill'? It sounds like 'travel' or 'gravel'? I've been pronouncing it 'ill' sound on the end like 'Bill' or 'Will' for years. Ooops.
grynningguy - 2/27/2012, 6:45 PM
I'm insanely afraid of heights, or falling, or both; if Warner told me I could make a Superman or Batman movie but only if I walked across a beam, fifty stories up, I'd sure as Hell be running across that thing faster than one can say lights, camera, action!!!!!! Come on Ratner!!! Tighten your balls and get on the frickin plane!!!!!!!!! Sheesh.

LoL anyway, I'd have to say a Supes written by Abrahms doesn't sound half bad. Even with Ratner directing I bet it'd have been better than Singer's. Which I Did indeed like, it was just not at all what the audience wanted. But That's done and over with, Snyder will more than deliver so HELL YEAH CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DioFoRio - 2/27/2012, 9:35 PM
@rbfn04...yeah the Flyby script jj did had lex being a kryptonian...and had wars on krypton that resembled the war on naboo from Sw:ep 1 glad the script wasn't filmed. ugh
Tainted87 - 2/27/2012, 10:34 PM
McG* Not Ratner.
Foxpaw - 2/27/2012, 11:34 PM
had everything going for him until he mentioned the title...

"...brilliant, McG. we love it. so what's the title?"

"superman: flyby."

"i'm sorry, McG, not sure if i heard you right. superman what?"

"superman: flyby, sir. picked it myself."

"so it was your idea?"

ManofSteelo - 2/28/2012, 9:01 AM
THE FAIL before career FAIL. Next!
AUSSYACE - 3/2/2012, 10:20 PM
Thank god this never got made...

Zack has way more respect for this character than McG ever did...
TheTank - 3/17/2012, 3:49 PM
JJ would have been great as the director. His script had some amazing elements in it, and the action was amazing, i remember when his first draft came out Harry Knowles joked that it would cost like 300 million to film it. The shitty elements of it were that it changed the mythology alot including....

Krypton not exploding (it was in the middle of a civil war)
Superman being sent to earth to fulfill some kind of prophecy
Lex Luthor at the end of the script was revealed to be a kryptonian spy who was on earth to destroy superman.
Jimmy Olsen was gay.
Not to mention that once again a writer invented a villain for the movie, Ty-Zor, a Zod like baddy that was Superman's cousin, and a leader in the resistance against Jor-el and his guys.

If you read it, a lot of the origin stuff comes across as trying to avoid doing anything that had been done in Superman: The movie. Although J.J did say that the scripts leaked online were far from the finished draft and that the mythology was going to be respected. McG had said it in a video interview from around 2004 as well that a lot of the problems they had getting things started had to do with "the genesis of the character"

I admit though, I'm more psyched for Man of Steel but I'm kinda let down with any stuff I've seen so far, the costume they were using for Flyby as well as any production art was pretty amazing. I don't like the sound of doing a "Neo-Midevil" Krypton. But I have faith in the team assembling this one.

Also flyby was just the working title, I had read interviews with McG, Ratner, and Abrhams, that the movie was most likely going to be titled just "Superman"
TheTank - 3/17/2012, 3:53 PM
Superman's debut in the script was pretty amazing as well.

He performed some kind of huge recuse of jimmy and lois if i remember correctly, something similar to birthright, a big fiasco in metropolis. And then fearing the crowd he returns home to smallville where his mom gives him something from his ship, 5 different metal pieces that when arranged form the S logo on his chest, he then retreats to a mountain top in the Andes and thinks, while hearing all the cries and catastrophes around the world and one by one he takes off to intervene.
