MAN OF STEEL Costume Illustrator Talks Superman's New Suit

Get the details on the origin of the new suit. Is it related in any way to the New 52? Is it made by Martha Kent or something more Kryptonian? Is Zod mostly CGI? And apparently there was a big debate about the red undies. All these answers and more.

Illustrator Phillip Boutte talks about the design process for Zack Snyder's Superman suit in Man of Steel. Apparently the production wrestled with whether to include the red underwear before eventually deciding to go without them. So was that influenced by DC's New 52 suit? Not all, apparently the decision was simply based on the desire to make Superman more alien and the production felt that the underwear made him more earth-like. Famous concept artist Warren Manser was the man that actually came up with the suit design. The interview goes on to also reveal that the suit is of Kryptonian origin. There's a little bit of wordplay here, but I believe the interviewee may have confirmed that General Zod is mostly CGI in this film, that is to say, his costume is. So maybe he wears his infamous armor from the comic books?

Using Chicago and Vancouver as a backdrop, with production to be based in west suburban Plano, Illinois, the film entered principal photography in August 2011, for a planned theatrical release on June 14, 2013 by Warner Bros., which also includes IMAX venues.

Clark Kent is a journalist in his twenties who was adopted as a child by Martha and Jonathan Kent after he was transported to Earth from the dying planet Krypton. MarkJulian - 7/15/2012, 9:57 PM
Yeah, Snyder confirmed it's playing in front of TDKR.
SuperDude001 - 7/15/2012, 10:01 PM
I hope the trailer goes online soon after TDKR is released though, cause at all the cinemas I go to they never show the new trailers when they're supposed to.
Though still this movie is looking better and btter with everything I hear and the costume is very much growing on me.
SuspenseSmith - 7/15/2012, 10:11 PM

JDUKE25 - 7/15/2012, 10:13 PM
Love the suit and the whole direction of the movie. That footage was great from what we could see.

I thought he said there would be a shorter one or a shorter version of that in front of TDKR?
IIIAdamantiumIII - 7/15/2012, 10:16 PM

musashi - 7/15/2012, 10:17 PM
This sounds awesome! But a year does sound like a long time for post production. I'm happy to wait if it means top notch special effects!
Tony93 - 7/15/2012, 10:17 PM

@sbdc1939

I just can't wait to see The Dark Knight Rises, regardless of trailers... but yeah, I'm excited too.

but if it looks anything like Sucker Punch, I'll sucker punch Synder's head off.
JULEZ13 - 7/15/2012, 10:35 PM
LOL @ SuspenseSmith: You read my mind!!

Oh and Nolan is gonna KILL HIM for saying so much about the movie!!! You weren't supposed to admit that Zod was the villain (even though the world already knows *rolls eyes*)!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!! And don't look back!! lol

xD
JULEZ13 - 7/15/2012, 10:40 PM
Just looked up his website!

He has some impressive work up there. Worked for a lot of big names! And he looks so young! Props, Mr. Boutte Jr.!
HeatNation - 7/15/2012, 10:47 PM
I'm all for following main idea of superman but making it ur own and making it more modern maybe doing things different from the comics but if ur gonna switch stuff up make sure it's awesome. So far im impressed. Obviously haven't had much to look at but that clip was stunning even if I couldn't see great but if the movie can have that emotional/dark feeling that previous superman movies haven't had I'm sold. And the suit is the best suit ever. Superman needed a better look and cavill I think will be the best superman yet. I think he's gonna bring a bad ass look to superman for once.
CoolantTech - 7/15/2012, 10:51 PM
The guy didn't know what the New 52 was... Fail
JULEZ13 - 7/15/2012, 10:54 PM
I'm kinda afraid to admit it.... as a traditionalist..... but I think I am digging the no undies look.... I might even be all for no undies from now on.... THE HORROR!!! ((O~O))

I really think they succeeded in this redesign. I am 100% sold on this.

And @ HeatNation: YOU ARE RIGHT!!! Cavill is gonna definitely OWN Superman! I can't wait to watch this movie!!!!!
JULEZ13 - 7/15/2012, 10:55 PM
@ CoolantTek: He's a costume designer... My first dorm roommate was a costume designer.... most aren't big on comics. So I wasn't really surprised about that.
SuspenseSmith - 7/15/2012, 10:59 PM
I think so far all we've really seen of this movie is the costume, and the costume is great!

[frick] underpants... who needs them anyway.
CoolantTech - 7/15/2012, 11:01 PM
@JULEZ13 OK so since he deigns costumes for superheroes he should be up on All the new comics, Right?.. For ideas
oldnoname - 7/15/2012, 11:04 PM
It worried me that he didn't know what the DCnU was then I realized this movie was being made before it so he really didn't need to know. It does confirm that the new 52 didn't affect the design of the suit though.

So pumped for this movie!
SuspenseSmith - 7/15/2012, 11:04 PM
for me the red underwear always unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) draws the eyes away from the Man of Steel's face to... well... his steel.

Red just draws the eye and putting it on his groin just makes things awkward. Who that was a good idea in the first place, anyway?

Just like you ain't gonna see Wolverine in a yellow and blue leotard, or this armor in an Iron Man movie...

some things just need to change.

Comic book fans have to understand that these films are not just made for them, but to mainstream audiences to justify the cost of these things.
GLprime2814 - 7/15/2012, 11:11 PM
Can't wait for cant wait for Friday AM and then by the time I get home from TDKR I'll be able to etch the trailer over and over and over and over online.
ShadowlordSavage - 7/15/2012, 11:15 PM
I'm okay with the new design and trying to update the suit to an extent, but this guys argument for it is pretty weak.

I mean your argument for the trunks being gone is that it's a more human look? Please, that is a very weak argument.

I mean I can buy that it's a bit easier and maybe a bit more realistic for the suit to instead come from Krypton instead of it somehow being unwoven and sued together by Martha Kent without cutting the fabric in any form or way. Clark would have at least needed to help with his heat vision.

There is still the argument that the suit is considered to be dated to a lot people; even called gay or ridiculous because it looks like he's wearing underwear over tights. But even then some would argue that just getting rid of the trunks doesn't really make it that much less "silly," too.

So to each his own I guess; however, I don't hate the redesign it's grown on me a bit and the costume is the only issue I've seen either-way. Until we see more of the film itself we can't just judge the movie solely on the tweaks in the suit.

So far the teaser footage has gained mostly positive responses; that gives me hope for this film to be good.
AnonymousGuy - 7/15/2012, 11:26 PM
This guy seems like such a chill dude.
pintoman - 7/15/2012, 11:46 PM
I'm sure they followed some form of "logic" to end up with the suit we see, the problem is they shouldn't have even gone down that road. That "logic" by-passes pop-culture and audience expectations. We're not talking about a new character. Superman has been around for decades.

The key element to a successful film is the story. Using a suit that better-matches previous incarnations, with a good story, wouldn't be any less successful.

It won't matter if a new superman hitches up with the other members of the Justice League if they all look different.
DioFoRio - 7/15/2012, 11:49 PM
on Krypron all costumes are made with kickball plastic.
DioFoRio - 7/15/2012, 11:51 PM
I do like the costume though. I must be an alien then cuz underwear is like wearing two pairs of pants whether you wear em inside or out.
Tony93 - 7/15/2012, 11:55 PM
Where does Snyder confirm that that teaser footage was the actual teaser to be shown in front of TDKR.. Because the teaser ain't getting any better than that unless it's not as good as this one :/..
ManofSteel91 - 7/16/2012, 12:01 AM
Haven't seen the trailer yet I can't wait to see it!!!
wde325 - 7/16/2012, 12:33 AM
The new costume sucks just as bad as the 52 one and that sissified "Superman Returns" one! I can understand tweaking it a little to keep up with the times, but they went TOO far in my opinion.
spideyboy - 7/16/2012, 12:35 AM
Because of Superman, I've decided I don't need to wear underwear either :)
spideyboy - 7/16/2012, 12:37 AM
Never have and never will.
brokeBatman - 7/16/2012, 1:27 AM
That interview did make me feel a lot more comfortable about those lines on his suit, I must say.

@yossarian -lol, so true.
Ichaos - 7/16/2012, 1:32 AM
Some pics that come out look acceptable. the poster close up of the costume just looks like they went too far with the rubber costume and texture.

And I HATE that still showing on the video before you play it. PLEASE kill it from the internet. It just so looks like he is ordering a cup of tea and a crumpet.
Ichaos - 7/16/2012, 1:33 AM
I HATE these same commercials that play ALL THE TIME. Maybe someone post from another source with these vid clips that arent going to keep showing thats stupid rubber suit nuns with guns. its LAME
Ichaos - 7/16/2012, 1:36 AM
For crying outloud. Why do they have to have a complete BS story for removing the shorts. Their reason is because it looks too Earth like and not alien enough???? Sorry NOBODY on earth dresses like Supermans old or new costume. If they don't want to say we changed it to avoid lawsuits then don't commment on it. Why have a feeble lie??
Ichaos - 7/16/2012, 1:38 AM
hmmmm question on the new 52 look had a edit point. Guess someone didn't like the answer
Ichaos - 7/16/2012, 1:41 AM
WTF Hansel and Grettle Witch Hunters???? For crying outloud STOP with the reimagining!!!! Try imagining instead!!!
Ichaos - 7/16/2012, 1:45 AM
@SuspenseSmith actually the shorts work well for concealing his "steel" because they can make it looser like in some depictions in comics so you see less crotch buldge. The crotch bold in that costume is impossible to ignore. I found the new 52 costume belt pretty much being an arrot pointing at his "steel". They are going to have to do a lot of post editing to conceal crotch buldge
Berger45 - 7/16/2012, 2:50 AM
Man of Steel!!!!!!!!!!

SamHell - 7/16/2012, 4:06 AM
Hm. wonder why he likes Supes costume so much
silverdog - 7/16/2012, 4:07 AM
as long as they dont use a lot of close ups like the promotional poster.. cause that super sweater looks super itchy.
