Kevin Smith talks MAN OF STEEL; Says WB Should Steal Marvel's Plans

Kevin Smith has some advice for DC Comics and Warner Bros when making DC related movies... Copy Marvel. Yup. And he hopes that starts with this week's Superman relaunch, Man of Steel. Hit the jump to find out what he says...

"I wish that DC would just flat out be like, 'We're just going to steal Marvel's plan since it seems to be working for them,' and then just do the same thing," the filmmaker and geek guru tells QMI Agency. "They've got characters and they can do a Justice League movie as well." From what he has seen, the Clerks filmmaker - who wrote Superman Lives back in the 1990s which never got made - thinks director Zack Snyder and star Henry Cavill are on the right track with Man of Steel. "I liked Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, I thought it honoured the Dick Donner versions, but what I've seen from Man of Steel has pulled me right in," says Smith. "There is one moment where Superman is speeding Lois Lane away from danger and we get a glimpse of her face and to me it looks like she's saying, 'If this dude slows down we are dead.' If you can show me something that beautiful that brings me as close to the comic book experience as humanly possible, you've got my money."

they weren't the first people to make cbms. i don't see what the big deal is
sameoldthing - 6/10/2013, 1:39 PM
Kevin Smith says: "I'M FAT."
Just kidding..he is fat though.
TheGambitFreak - 6/10/2013, 1:39 PM
Smith is a smart man... He was signed on to Write that Superman movie on the Lois/Clark sex talk scene in Mallrats alone....
EdgyOutsider - 6/10/2013, 1:39 PM
Marvel way is the best way, and if done the right way the GA could fall for the DC characters. No Snyder for Justice League
Jollem - 6/10/2013, 1:42 PM
the ga already loves the dc characters. don't let a few people on this site let you believe otherwise with their lies and propaganda
dellamorte1872 - 6/10/2013, 1:42 PM
i agree with him in the sense that everytime something advances technically the film always gets a boost towards illustrating a true comic in motion. and yes; DC has great characters and the POTENTIAL is there for a DC film universe a la MARVEL
rocky - 6/10/2013, 1:46 PM
I never felt DC needed to copy Marvel. Heck at one point if not for some tax breaks we may have already gotten a JL film

Having said that Marvel has laid down a great blueprint. DC can add a World's Finest or a Trinity film to distinguish itself.
Outside of that I hope they don't let their egos (we won't follow Marvel) get the best of them
EdgyOutsider - 6/10/2013, 1:47 PM
Jollem: The GA loves Batman and some like Superman. Everyone else needs a movie before Justice League.
Jollem - 6/10/2013, 1:56 PM
@Crossbones - i don't believe so. can you look me straight in the eye and tell me a wonder woman movie will "fail"? no, i didn't think so

people know these characters. they have for many, many years. people give waaaaaay too much credit to marvel studios

what did they do? make individual superhero movies? well, that's been done

a team movie? lots of those have been done before thing that is true you can say is that marvel studios was the first to do some cbms with characters, and then make a movie that has most of the characters from all their other movies in it. doesn't sound too impressive, does it?

i guess "phase" and "shared universe" sound better ;)
Ramiel - 6/10/2013, 1:58 PM

Just because Superman is the most recognized character doesn't mean he's a money maker though. His comics really don't sell well. Does he even have any video games? Superman Returns wasn't a box office hit.

MOS, along with Superman Unchained, may change the general audience's feelings towards him.
SpiderParker - 6/10/2013, 2:02 PM
@Nomis I don't think mush of the General Audience knew about Cap, maybe Hulk though. Anyway, DC should do the same otherwise it wouldn't make sense how in the world so many Hero's came to be.
EdgyOutsider - 6/10/2013, 2:02 PM
@Jollem: Actually it does cause it really hasn't been done before and no one believed Avengers would be good cause of how many characters and everything they had to do in it. If this was football, Marvel Studios would be tossing the ball down the field in succession effortlessly. Adults and any youth these days that enjoy DC comics (not saying they're more interested in Marvel) know Wonder Woman. But, I'm talking the MAIN GA, the audience that heard of Wonder Woman but knows nothing about her. That's the whole thing, you need a solo movie to gain GA interest. Besides RDJ, why do you think Marvel is able to take B grade characters and make them beloved by the GA and not just comicbook characters?
SpiderParker - 6/10/2013, 2:07 PM
@Jollem The thing Marvel Studios did was take the risk. They went ahead with a plan to set up these characters for Avengers with characters that many people didn't know about. Give some credit to those guys man.
SpiderParker - 6/10/2013, 2:10 PM
For DC, only Batman and Superman are well known, other characters need their own movies 5 new Superheroes with god knows who or where they came from wouldn't make sense. Atleast some of them beside Bats and Supes should have their own movies so they will have less characters to introduce in JL Movie.
Jollem - 6/10/2013, 2:25 PM
@Crossbones - "shared universes" have been done before. i had no doubt at all that people could make an avengers movie. movies have been done before. take some people in crazy costumes and film them saying and doing stuff. add some cgi and sound effects later. boom. done. people know about dc and their characters. it's silly to say otherwise. solo movies are not needed

"Besides RDJ, why do you think Marvel is able to take B grade characters and make them beloved by the GA and not just comicbook characters?"

hype, advertising, and comedy :)

@SpiderParker - sure, the mcu was a risk. so was catwoman. so was django unchained. almost every movie is a risk to a company. i give them credit for making some good cbms, surely. lots of dc characters are well-known. even to people who don't know comic books at all
EdgyOutsider - 6/10/2013, 2:31 PM
@Jollem: Comedy would come more from Iron Man and The Avengers Hulk and yeah, Avengers definitely had more comedy than needed but it worked. Marvel embraces its campiness and humor. They don't try to be serious. What's wrong with escapism? Hype and advertisement is what every big blockbuster has. Again, Wonder Woman and The Flash need the big screen treatment before a Justice League movie so the non-comicbook reading audience who have never seen the Justice League cartoon or the Wonder Woman tv show can be familiar with the characters.

If you don't introduce the characters to them in an interesting way, they're not going to buy into it. Marvel definitely is more lighthearted of the two companies but what's wrong with embracing the identity of being a comicbook movie. They're like Neveldine/Taylor. Not there to go for Oscars and what not, they're here to entertain.

As someone who don't really read DC comics and don't have the money to buy comics. I would be interested in a Wonder Woman and The Flash movie before Justice League. If I don't then I'm going to be confused as to who these characters are and what their motives and purposes as heroes and to the story are. That's me as a general audience member, not a comicbook fan.
MrReese - 6/10/2013, 2:31 PM
MoS already guaranteed like 3 viewings from me XD

@Cipher lol wtf
ruadh - 6/10/2013, 2:45 PM
That's funny, since Smith ripped Superman Returns apart when it first came out.
Jollem - 6/10/2013, 2:46 PM
@Crossbones -

"What's wrong with escapism?"

nothing. that's why i like all this stuff :)

i guarantee you that anyone who is not familiar with comic books at all with enjoy any cbm if it is good and enjoyable. knowledge of the characters or the worlds are not required to enjoy a movie :)
EdgyOutsider - 6/10/2013, 3:16 PM
@FIRG: So, you believe Avengers would've been a success if they didn't build up to it? If they did/do that with Justice League then they'll just be relying on Superman and their golden boy
DukeAcureds - 6/10/2013, 3:22 PM
Besides, Marvel were just doing what their comics had already done. Thta was the right way to do it, so that's what they did. To stay faithful to the comics. So DC should do the same to stay faithful to their comics.
I mean, when Snyder did 300, he didn't get scared that people would say he was just copying Sin City, by being extremely faithful to the source material.
If they're really scared that people are gonna say that they're ripping off Marvel they can just point out that they actually did it first, in the comics. Justice Society was way before Avengers. And they were really the first to link up their superhero universe, I think, with that World's Fair cover that had Superman, Batman and Robin on it.
Cipher@ That gif is fvcking balls-mental, man. I love it.
Jollem - 6/10/2013, 3:26 PM
@FIRG - haven't seen king's speech. heard it was good. carter as queen elizabeth? kooky
DukeAcureds - 6/10/2013, 3:50 PM
FIRG@ In fact it's writing 101 that you have to assume theat your audience doesn't know what you are trying to tell them. That way you can tell them it properly.
I watched the last Twilight film last year. Had no fvcking clue what was going on. Slept through most of it. Woke up at the end when heads were being chopped off. And that was all a dream. Man, Twilights a bag of shit.
Gnyah123 - 6/10/2013, 4:28 PM
we dont need TV SHOWS we need MOVIES!!
yes he is right...cavil said it himself as well!!
he thinks they shud explore the universe first before jumping into a JL movie...and he is right!!

the only character who is acceptable for showing up in the JL movie is batman cuz we all know his origin etc...he is the only character who i think shud be allowed to show up in the JL movie...every1 else shud get their own movie first!! before
SpiderParker - 6/10/2013, 5:38 PM
"GL, Flash, and Wonderwoman has a following w/o movies or TV shows."

They may have a fan following among the comic readers and many people must have heard of them before but how many know their back stories? How they came to be? How they got their powers and stuff.
That's why individual movies are important. Do you think Avengers would have made $1.5 bil if individual movies before it didn't come? Just cause Marvel did it first doesn't mean DC fans should be hating the idea cause in the end it's just gonna make a better movie no matter if they followed Marvel a bit.
typicalfanboy - 6/11/2013, 2:57 PM
they don't have to steal the marvel way. the only characters that are interesting and have film worthy villains are batman and superman, and aquaman to some extent. the others are quite boring, and work great in a jl setting. the justice league cartoon didn't even set up each hero with a cartoon. only batman and superman had their own, but people still liked JL/JLU. you don't have to set up everyone.

marvel didn't "win" with their plan either. after ironman 1 their movies were ok, but subpar from the standard set with iron man, and were only there to setup the avengers, which was great, but they changed a great deal to cap, thor, and hulk's origins. iron-man 3 was complete trash. i think it's funny how the hardcore marvel supporters think that's cool, but they crap all over every dc movie for making slight changes.
osideous - 6/11/2013, 9:21 PM
Lol, every time I come on here someone says a something so baffling I'm surprised they weren't already called out.

Nomis what you said was so bullshit. The General Audience knows Marvels characters as well as DC's Captain America, Spiderman, Batman, Superman are all on equal footing of recognizabiltiy. Please don't undervalue that, because you come off to people with real common sense as moronic for that statement. All these characters are recognized by the GA they've been around for damn near 70years. So stop with bullshit comments.
