EDITORIAL: Thoughts On The Flash Pilot [SPOILER FREE]

EDITORIAL: Thoughts On The Flash Pilot [SPOILER FREE]

So, the CW's Flash t.v. pilot recently leaked online and I managed to watch it. As a guy who's never read a Flash comic, I figured I'd chip in my two cents regarding the episode and whether or not my interests were peaked. And if you don't wanna be spoiled, read on, because I won't be doing any spoiling!

Okay, so as a good proportion of you know, the CW's Flash t.v. pilot just leaked online to the surprise of us all, I think. Like I mentioned in the teaser, I've never read a Flash comic and wouldn't thereby consider myself a fan of the character. But, you didn't come here to hear my comic book preferences, you came to see what I thought of the episode. Well, my fellow comic book fanatics, I was pleasantly surprised.

This pilot has shown me that superpowers can indeed work on the small screen just as well as they do on the big screen. I mean sure, it doesn't look quite as glitzy and all that other stuff, but the special effects on the powered characters certainly gets the job done as far as I'm concerned.

The dialogue held up throughout the episode, despite a few cheesy bits, but I like a bit of cheese with my superhero related stuff, because it's damned well a traditional aspect of the genre. Also, I think all the characters, or at least the key characters have brilliant on screen chemistry and that was a withstanding feature throughout this pilot.

I dunno if I have the right to say the roles are well-cast seeing as how I have no real knowledge of how the Flash is in the books, but I gotta say, Grant Gustin's performance was pretty solid and like I said, there's brilliant on screen chemistry with the characters, especially Barry and Iris I found.

As soon as I found the article on here, contributed by the lovely nailbiter111, I immediately linked it on my Facebook page. A friend of mine said, "Christ that was so genereic, it hurt." I could only respond that as a super hero show, a little generics never hurt anybody. Plus he doesn't read comics , so what would he know!

Anywho, all in all, I have to admit that I was enthralled by the pilot and even found myself squealing with excitement at times, despite not having any real fanatacism for the character, but nonetheless, I really enjoyed this pilot! If you were expecting a dark and gritty crime drama or a super action-y show, this probably won't be the show for you. But if you prefer shows that are fun, quirky and have a nice comic book-y feel to them, then I think this pilot has shown that that's what we'll be in for.

I've been NovaCorpsFan, I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on the pilot. What did you guys think? What would you want to see improved or even what would you want to see less of? Be sure to tell me in the comments below, and try to keep it spoiler-free, yeah?

Solid pilot.I was hanging with my friend when I clicked on the article as he was on his way out.Lets just say dude decided not 2 leave & watch it.This a non cb fan btw.Although he does play a lot of Injustice. :)
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 6:03 PM
Pasto, I'd delete that if I didn't have a sense of humour.
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 6:05 PM

I've got a buddy who's trawling the dregs of the internet trying to find the pilot right now. He took a nap and woke up to the news likely minutes before it got taken down. Obviously he's gutted, but I assured him he wouldn't be disappointed.
Vegeta - 6/24/2014, 6:08 PM
Nice write up Nova. I think the pilot was [frick]ing EPIC! I can't wait for the next episode this fall. The CW have made this Flash fan VERY happy!

ndwwrestler2 - 6/24/2014, 6:08 PM
It was inevitable that I was going to compare this pilot to Arrow's pilot. And I have to say between the two, The Flash's pilot episode is by far the superior.

Seeing the Grodd sign was great. And even though I'm not a Flash fan, seeing Thawne with Iris was...heartbreaking.

All in all this show has Fringe-like epic potential.
MrReese - 6/24/2014, 6:14 PM
@NovaCorpsFan Luckily I downloaded it just in time. :) I would have been so mad at myself if I missed it lol.I'm sure there's links up somewhere still.
MrReese - 6/24/2014, 6:15 PM
@Batmaniac Ikr! lol this is somewhat bittersweet in a way.We get the pilot but have 2 wait months 4 the next ep. :)
LEEE777 - 6/24/2014, 7:01 PM
I missed it damn :(

Nova @ You've never read a FLASH comic, dude whats wrong with you??? :P

Well gotta say Wally West before New 52 is much better than Barry New 52 is now sadly... but Flash is an awesome character yo! ;P
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 7:06 PM

After watching this, I'll be stockpiling Flash comics at Dublin Comic-Con.
Vegeta - 6/24/2014, 7:28 PM

As a newcomer to Flash, I'd recommend you start off with Flashpoint, and then move on to New 52 Flash. You could check out pre-New 52 Wally West's mythos of you want to, but I wouldn't advise it, since Wally West has gone through some changes in the new continuity, and without any preconceived notions on Wally West, you'll find it easier to embrace this new take on the character than long time Wally fans.

Plus, Barry's better than Wally anyway, haha!
batz11 - 6/24/2014, 7:29 PM
Good job Nova! Yeah, I haven't read a Flash comic since I was a kid (one of my fav DC characters), but I really enjoyed this episode, actually, it was pretty damn awesome...and the cameo (spoiler?) of GA was great as well, many cool easter eggs...I wonder if WB will be forced to air the pilot now sooner rather than later to help prevent so many viewings before it actually premiers in the fall...
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 7:31 PM
Cheers for the suggestions Batmaniac I'll certainly keep those in mind.
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 7:33 PM
And batz, that'd be sweet if they did. But would the whole show run earlier? Y'know, would the pilot be released early, then the rest of the show comes later at the assigned airing date?
batz11 - 6/24/2014, 7:36 PM
Yeah, not sure? Kinda great for us "fans" to see this early, but feel kinda bad for all the people that worked their asses off, only to have this leak so early...maybe WB will air just the pilot early (like very soon) and have us wait for the fall for the rest? Or, right, air maybe some of the first few eps if they're in the can by now...guess we'll see what fallout we get...
batz11 - 6/24/2014, 7:38 PM
Oh, see my last comment on that Grodd article LOL ;)
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 7:42 PM
I totally responded to it, man.

Yeah, it must suck to have been working on it. But now, they know if people like it or not and I haven't really seen any negative buzz.
LEEE777 - 6/24/2014, 7:46 PM
Awesome @ Nova ; D
batz11 - 6/24/2014, 7:49 PM
Right, it could actually work in their favor, who know, maybe 'they' leaked it, ha,ha...see what reaction it would get? That'd be a twist, huh?

I'm very intrigued with the shared universe with Arrow, that could really kick that show into another gear too...bring on other cameos like Wayne, Nightwing, etc...wow, I'd take a DCTVU (television universe) and a DCCU...

I'm just not sure a cross-over of the two universes would be a good idea or not (I have turned more into a fan of that idea though, think Amell is awesome as GA, Gustin is great as Barry) but not sure they'd fit with the movie-verse or not...guess we'll see...
NovaCorpsFan - 6/24/2014, 7:52 PM
We certainly will, batz. We certainly will.
Superheromoviefan - 6/25/2014, 12:02 AM
Sounds good
i'll check it
Doopie - 6/25/2014, 1:50 AM
I caught it. I really liked it. I found the plot and character interactions quite predictable - I knew that guy could still walk, That Iris would get with the cop, that Barry would have to run the opposite way round the vortex, even that Det. West would want to keep Iris 'out of it' - long before they happened as they were all heavily sign-posted. I found some of the dialogue and performances a little cheesy/corny too.
Having said I did really enjoy it. While slightly generic, you kind of have to do that to some degree with a pilot especially in this genre.
The bit toward the end when Barry is stopping the tornado looked like it was straight out of a comic book. It also had some nice touches of humour and overall has a lighter than Arrow which is a nice change.
I think it has a chance of becoming a great show
Klone - 6/25/2014, 2:31 AM
Oh look gifs. I'm shocked.
Klone - 6/25/2014, 2:33 AM

No, look at Johns and Waid's work primarily before moving into New 52 and Flashpoint territory. There's also Crisis on Infinite Earths. It is not a Flash story though it contains an iconic moment centered around Barry.
TheFox - 6/25/2014, 2:34 AM

(Immediately hops onto The Pirate Bay.)

SychoSid85 - 6/25/2014, 3:17 AM
I hate poorly written articles.
Dickel - 6/25/2014, 3:22 AM
I would bet my left nut on the fact that this leak was intentional.
I'm sure you've all heard the phrase -"no such thing as bad publicity."
Releasing it this early is actually quite a smart move I think, even if they've done it under the guise of 'leaked'.
They can:
a) see what sort of reception it gets
b) get people talking about it months before it ever comes out, which helps to build the anticipation so they get huge numbers when it does release.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/25/2014, 3:22 AM
A basic cheese fest that fans that are toting around the humorless dark and gritty arrow will be disappointed unless standards have changed to force yourself to like this pilot. ;)
UltimateCookie - 6/25/2014, 3:24 AM
Pretty good pilot and I hope I'm there to see-. Wait a minute there's someone at my door.

I like bacon.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 6/25/2014, 3:25 AM
@Dickel huge numbers on CW? Yeah I doubt that will happen on a basement network. ;)
UltimateCookie - 6/25/2014, 3:30 AM
Arrow is actually a good balance of drama and humor if you watch it.
Vegeta - 6/25/2014, 3:32 AM
Well, based on the fact that the show is very New 52 Flash, and the New 52 was made for people like Nova who have never read Flash and want a clear starting point, there's no point in Nova starting off with with arcs deep into long running continuity.

It's essentially like telling somebody who's never watched Lord of the Rings before to start with The Two Towers.
Mothchild - 6/25/2014, 3:42 AM
The pilot was very satisfying viewing. I watched it twice and could easily watch it again in a few days. Not perfect by any means but on the whole pretty darn great.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the DCU is expanded in this show.

Booster Gold is a high probability.

UltimateCookie - 6/25/2014, 3:48 AM
New 52 was a good idea gone wrong imo
UltimateHunt - 6/25/2014, 3:49 AM
How long is arrow In the pilot?
Mothchild - 6/25/2014, 3:56 AM
@ UltimateHunt

2 minutes
Dickel - 6/25/2014, 4:07 AM

Sources say he was 6" in the pilot, but got a further 5" added via an operation, in about the 8th episode.
Vegeta - 6/25/2014, 4:09 AM
The New 52 is great. It's worked wonders for characters like Animal Man, Aquaman and Wonder Woman, who's solo series have never been stronger than they are now, and then there's excellent titles like Justice League Dark and Earth 2.

Let's not sit here and pretend like everything was perfect pre-Flashpoint, because it wasn't. The New 52 has been a breath of fresh air.
BenjiWest - 6/25/2014, 4:17 AM
Earth 2 is an incredible series, with a very good interpretation of the Jay Garrick Flash.

Good article Nova!
Vegeta - 6/25/2014, 4:19 AM
I agree BenjiWest. I was really impressed with the new interpretation of Jay Garrick/Flash.
SuperCat - 6/25/2014, 4:27 AM
Enjoyed the pilot. Looking forward to the next episode.
