Season One Of THE FLASH Adds A New Rogue In The Form Of 'Girder'

Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) sure is going to have his hands full during the first season of The Flash as it has been revealed that Tony Woodward, a.k.a. Girder, will be making an appearance in the series. There's no word on who will play him, but read on for further details!

With Weather Wizard set to appear in the pilot and Wentworth Miller cast as Captain Cold, season one of The Flash is quickly putting together a superpowered rogues gallery for Barry Allen which could soon see the formation of, well, The Rogues! TV Line reports that episode 6 will see the introduction of recurring character, Tony Woodward a.k.a. Girder. In the comics, Woodward is thrown into a vat of molten steel which includes scraps from S.T.A.R. Labs experiments after assaulting a female co-worker. Those scraps convert his body into living iron and imbue him with superhuman strength and a high resistance to harm, though he does rust. However, The CW series describes this version of the character as someone who used to bully young Barry in the schoolyard. Now, as a result of the particle accelerator exploding, Woodward is "a grinning lunkhead who loves destruction," and an "unstoppable force… who can transmute any part of his body into solid steel." Girder was created by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver, and first appeared in 2001's Flash: Iron Heights series. What do you guys think about this latest addition to the show?

The CW are really building up a universe. I just hope they don't follow the freak of the week route Smallville took, that would make all these additions redundant

I'm curious on how some of the effects will look in this show, especially Grodd. Can't wait to see it.

I hope if they can't make Grodd look really good with their budget, then keep him in the dark. I really liked how Smallville handled Doomsday (in the beginning of the season) when they just showed him in the shadows or had his eye glowing. When they eventually did the full reveal he looked so fake.

I really hope they save Grodd for when they know they can nail his CGI.
JoeMomma29 - 8/6/2014, 9:06 AM
Girder will be awesome but yet another character that hinges on good CGI.
FordEl - 8/6/2014, 9:10 AM
This character looks cool. Looks like he will be a challenge for Barry
SnapperCarr - 8/6/2014, 9:17 AM
Flash has the best rogues gallery in comics behind Batman and Spider-Man. I hope this show explores all of that.

And I want to see Elongated Man.
LEOSTRATOR - 8/6/2014, 9:24 AM
Never heard of him.
Klone - 8/6/2014, 9:35 AM
Obligatory gif frenzy in 3, 2, 1...
BlackIceJoe - 8/6/2014, 9:35 AM
Hopefully Blacksmith will be the next villain to show up on the show.
Gusto - 8/6/2014, 9:40 AM
Yeah...this is a gamble.
Snotzo - 8/6/2014, 9:44 AM
Almost sure that is Bender's brother.
CaptShipwreck - 8/6/2014, 9:47 AM
Is this a good thing DC guys ? Serious question I'm not familiar with him
Battabing - 8/6/2014, 9:51 AM
Anybody who survived the particle accelerator explosion with powers had a dormant metahuman gene.

It's how the gene works. It's defensive in nature, protecting its host from fatal harm by developing a kickback mechanism of extreme preservation that manifests as superpowers.

The first supervillain team to assemble on TV or movies? Yep, it's a good thing, especially The Rogues under Geoff Johns management.

I like how expansive CW is making the Arrow/Flash universe. This would have been cool if it connected to the DC cinematic universe because it can touch areas that the movies won't be able to. Could have helped flesh out the culture of superheros and villains. Also, what @Battabing said, explain the presence of metahumans in the world. That could be true, that's why many superhero origins happen to be by an accident of some sort. Chemical reaction, explosions, etc which the gene manifests as a superpower resistant and adapts to the danger which then becomes their superpower.

Just a thought tho

I've always felt Flash would work better as a TV show because of his rouges gallery. Reverse Flash and Grodd are the only characters I could think of that could even sustain a film as the main villain, but even Grodd's probably not a gamble WB would be willing to take.
MJPETTY7 - 8/6/2014, 10:46 AM
@Battabing Aren't you forgetting the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants from the X-Men franchise?
darthgeekboy - 8/6/2014, 11:03 AM
one of my biggest pet peeves about SMALLVILLE was that the supervillain of the week was always the result of the meteor rocks. it kinda negated the whole "the world needs superman" thesis since smallville's problems wouldn't have happened in the first place if kal-el hadn't crash landed on earth.

........and i'm dreading the same for THE FLASH, with the linear accelerator explosion that gave barry his powers, the same reason the bad guys have theirs.
Daniellantern - 8/6/2014, 11:06 AM
I think Kristofer Hivjun who plays as Tormund Giantsbane in game of thrones would be perfect for Girder!
Battabing - 8/6/2014, 11:32 AM

Not really. I always got the sense that in the movies, Magneto's "brotherhood" was just a group of mutants who went about achieving mutant rights differently than Xavier. They weren't put together to oppose Xavier and the X-men. They just had different ways of achieving the same goals.

The Rogues, however, are blue-collar villains who decided that there was safety in numbers when it came to the Flash. The Flash is their main reason for partnering up.
And what I like about the Rogues is that they consider Central City their home turf and they don't like it when other villains come calling. In that instance, they'll happily team up with Flash to repel invaders. They also don't pull scores that could have too negative an impact on the majority of the citizens of Central City. For example, they won't hit banks where the majority of the citizens keep their money.

There was one heist I read about that they canceled because the optimum time to steal the money was the busiest time at the bank. However, their means for breaking in would have collapsed the floor of the bank. So they called it off because of the potential for human casualties. That's how Captain Cold runs that crew.
Battabing - 8/6/2014, 11:37 AM

Again, the reason Barry and all the others have powers is because they're metahumans.
It's really no different than the x-factor gene seen in mutants, except that if you have the x-factor gene you will certainly be a mutant.

If you have the metagene, you can go your whole life and it may never activate. It requires an extreme, life threatening event for your metagene to manifest. Out of maybe hundreds of people who died that night when the particle accelerator malfunctioned, perhaps 50 people developed powers instead of dying.

The CW has no idea what they are doing. If they can't get Barry Allen right or Flash's origin right or any of Barry's supporting cast right what are the odds they're going to get girder right?

I think a "freak of the week" treatment applies perfectly to The Flash. It's Team Flash's current mission... to find all of those affected by the particle accelerator explosion. I'm just hoping that the freak of the week treatment is leading up to The Rogues being the main antagonist in Season 2.
aRandomSinisterClone - 8/6/2014, 10:07 PM
@battabing, great way to describe how the rouges roll.
SADVIPER - 8/7/2014, 3:46 AM
I like this keep buildint it up CW.
