Armie Hammer And Johnny Depp Blame Critics For The Commercial Failure Of THE LONE RANGER

Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski all share their thoughts on how they believe the negative backlash from critics led to the commercial failure of The Lone Ranger. "They decided to slit the jugular of our movie."

In the following video interview with Yahoo! Movies, the cast and crew of The Lone Ranger share their thoughts on the negative reviews for the movie and how they ultimately impacted its - underwhelming - box office takings. While Johnny Depp said he believed that critics made their minds up about the film before it was even released, Armie Hammer ignored his disapproving publicist and said the following. "This is the deal with American critics: they’ve been gunning for our movie since it was shut down the first time, that’s when most of the critics wrote their initial reviews. If you go back and read the negative reviews, most of them aren’t about the content of the movie, but more what’s behind it. It’s got to the point with American critics where if you’re not as smart as Plato, your stupid. That seems like a sad way to live your life. While we were making it we knew people were gunning for it. I think it was the popular thing when the movie hit rocky terrain they jumped on the bandwagon to try and bash it. They tried to do the same thing with to ‘World War Z’, it didn’t work, the movie was successful. Instead they decided to slit the jugular of our movie." What do you guys think? Does he have a point? Be sure to check out the video below and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

People didn't like The Lone Ranger because it was a bad movie, with a sloppy script and subpar directing
TelaVizion - 8/6/2013, 3:27 AM
I heard people liked it. I haven't seen it yet
AmazingFantasy - 8/6/2013, 3:29 AM
No it's becuase it was a shitty movie

The end
OdinsMissingEye - 8/6/2013, 3:35 AM
I definetly would of seen this if the Lone Ranger was flying and Tonto was a giant robot, that would of been epic.
duncboy - 8/6/2013, 3:37 AM
i actually liked this movie
elib - 8/6/2013, 3:38 AM
The movie wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either. I had fun with it
Luminus - 8/6/2013, 3:40 AM
Plato didn't like dumbass movies with a rip-off character we'd seen in another movie and neither do I.
macfint - 8/6/2013, 3:40 AM
Seems like the WWZ analogy proves otherwise. Every Z review I've read mentioned the re-writes and poor expectations walkin in, but walked out pleasantly surprised. lone ranger just verified those poor expectations.
CavEl - 8/6/2013, 3:41 AM
Man of Steel wasnt critically acclaimed and it put up 650. Why Disney thought it was wise to release a movie with Despicable Me is a mystery to me.

Animated movies > Live Action movies tally. Man of Steel got thumped by Monster's U and sucker punched by WWZ. Only Iron Man 3 enjoyed a long reign due to lack of competition this year, that's why it made so much. Star Trek never picked up steam and the only movie that challenged it came 3 weeks later in Fast 6.

I dont think studios that had movies that flopped this summer should gibe up on the properties, no one had much room to make bank. Same thing with 2015, MOS 2(if Snyder and WB get their heads out their asses), Star Wars 7, Avengers 2 and other major blockbusters being released that year will limit a billion dollars tally from those three.

Next summer will have a billion dollar franchise in TASM2. TASM2 has no one competing with it except Cap 2...which I believe will suck. WB should pull a TDKRs and have another Nolan movie kill Webb's Spiderman.
DaddyTuesday - 8/6/2013, 3:42 AM
It wasn't that bad. Not the greatest movie in the world but I've seen a lot worse. I wasn't looking forward to this movie but now it seems that came more from the Hollywood rumor mill more than the actual movie itself. It's good harmless fun that the whole family can enjoy.
CavEl - 8/6/2013, 3:44 AM
The Avengers didnt have a challenger for an entire month, it was easy to dominate the BO. WB should start fighting for that early May release date Marvel keeps securing.
superstaff - 8/6/2013, 3:44 AM
Hey, Armie, maybe the movie just sucked and had little redeeming quality to it, thus why it deserved to fail.
Scooby - 8/6/2013, 3:50 AM
It was entertaining. I get what he is saying, it didn't deserve the bashing it got.
GeekyCheekyChic - 8/6/2013, 3:50 AM
critics slit your jugular because your movie sucked arse. too long too boring and sorry Johnny but you mailed it in performance wise. Armie- glad to hear you don't want to play Batman because you haven't really played any character with any level of talent that would be required for the Dark Knight. Go away all of you and please keep Pirates 5 to yourselves. NOBODY wants to see it.
CherryBomb - 8/6/2013, 3:52 AM
The budget was way too high. The film needed about 700 million to make a profit or something around that, it was doomed from the start.

People gave John Carter a lot of negativity when I really enjoyed the film. Even that too was a very high budget.
kadetra - 8/6/2013, 3:56 AM
lame excuse for a shitty movie.
Scooby - 8/6/2013, 3:57 AM
@Baroness I didn't watch it at the theater, ehm, so I prorbably think if I paid to see it I would've been a bit upset. Watching it for free and just to kill some time, I found it fun. Nothing to write home to mom about, or inspiring, or life changing, or orgasmic. Just "Hey, this is weird but I'm kind of enjoying it." I feel guilty for saying it though, hehe.
Selonian - 8/6/2013, 4:00 AM
I enjoyed this movie. It wasn't THAT bad.
nach1wan - 8/6/2013, 4:00 AM
@CavEl ooh GOOOOD... isnt gonna be an article where man of steel ISNT mentioned?
Superman007 - 8/6/2013, 4:05 AM
" They tried to do the same thing with to ‘World War Z’, it didn’t work"

weeeeeeelll.... it didnt work there... why did it work for " Lone Ranger" ? maybe IT WAS a sh** movie ?!!
superotherside - 8/6/2013, 4:06 AM
Haven't seen it yet but I doubt it was the critics fault for it failing.
CherryBomb - 8/6/2013, 4:07 AM
It's funny that people were praising Armie Hammer and because one of his films bombed they're jumping ship.

I still think he'd make a good Aquaman.
DJRock93 - 8/6/2013, 4:07 AM
@SuperCat Eye-a-fiya-jamoca shake
FilmsFan - 8/6/2013, 4:08 AM
i haven't seen it yet, its not out in UK!
i will see just for Depp!

& critics can be blamed (like i'll blame them for MOS negative reviews as they wanted something else & instead of reviewing MOS, they reviewed what SUPERMAN should be)!
But that doesn't effect the film!

PR got positive reviews & didn't do all that well!

but im kinda sad for Armie Hammer & in the last few weeks, speaking kida against SuperHero & in particular against BATMAN / SUPERMAN film etc, he's really losing it!

Pull your self together!
ahhmynuts - 8/6/2013, 4:09 AM
i thought it was pretty good for what its about. it was kinda long but oh well. he is right about the critics tho. i doubt a lot of these people come into movies with open minds.i feel like they actually look for why its bad instead of looking for reasons its good. no movie is perfect so to make the littlest problems of the movie into bigger ones just aint fair
Scooby - 8/6/2013, 4:10 AM
@CherryBomb No to Armie Hammer for Aquaman. He can't act. Plus, I think his shot at high profile roles is done, at least for a while.
mctrinket - 8/6/2013, 4:17 AM
Canon108 - 8/6/2013, 4:20 AM
The plot was a mess and predictable...not too mention all the over the top cheesy moments. The third act was crap. The list could go on, but poor filmmaking is to blame...
Cosmic1 - 8/6/2013, 4:29 AM
I blame Depp tonto is a side kick suck it up! My dad is an old school Lone Ranger fan, but it was too different so he didn't go see it nor bring his grand kids or me. That said political correctness and modernizing/updating to appeal to a new audience doesn't always work. It's like robin tryin to be on the same level as batman it kills the dynamics.
casanovagunny - 8/6/2013, 4:32 AM
I really enjoyed it and love the direction of the story. I agree that the critics killed it just like all the other movies having anything to do with comic books or superheroes. It seems to me they want so see the next Titanic or the next Avatar with every movie coming out.
ScRipt69 - 8/6/2013, 4:34 AM
Empire gave it 4/5 said it was a fun movie that made you feel 7yrs old again, I would like to see it, internet film critics are starting to really get my goat, Empire is the only site/mag I will listen to, over the years they have given me reviews I agree with, well most of the time. I bet half the people slagging it off havent even seen it, they just wanna be all cool-negative and emo about it. Troll-on boys and girls, no one cares what you think
SoundWave - 8/6/2013, 4:34 AM
They filmed piece of sh!t, what reaction from people/critics they want?!

What about simlpe people? Critics destroyed "Transformers 3" but it has BILLION dolloar gross! Who cares about critics?

The audience don't like sh!tty "Ranger" too. Totaly disappointment movie.
ComicBookKidUK - 8/6/2013, 4:36 AM
I guess whoever typed up the transcript wasn't as smart as Plato.

You're stupid. Not, your stupid.
CrimsonFlash - 8/6/2013, 4:37 AM
Given the movies that have been rotten on RT and still made tons of money this year their reasoning doesn't hold water. Word of mouth killed this movie.
Fry - 8/6/2013, 4:38 AM
mgeoff88 - 8/6/2013, 4:43 AM
I haven't watched The Lone Ranger yet. It's not surprising the movie was a commercial failure though, because from the trailers it looked bad.

It looked boring and generic. I didn't get a western vibe or a comic book movie vibe from it.

I'll at least pick it up when it hits Red Box.
knocturnalzen10 - 8/6/2013, 4:50 AM
cabbie655 - 8/6/2013, 4:51 AM
I saw the movie and enjoyed it. The critics had their agenda from day one. It is amazing how many people can be influenced by the opinions and/or goings on from a certain elite that don't seem to enjoy entertaiment very much. It was very unfair and the people involved do have a point. I would suggest to all of these naysayers to check it out. They will probably like it. That's the reason personally I don't listen to critics that appear to be jaded most of the times. I make my own judgments thank you very much.
Jolt17 - 8/6/2013, 4:51 AM
"It's one of those movies that, whatever critics
missed it this time, will re-review it in a few years
and see that they made a mistake
." -- Jerry Bruckheimer.

I'm pretty confident I can give the movie a rewatch in the next 10 years, and still loathe the hell out of it. When your movie tries to always be funny but it never is, while also treating the titular character as nothing but something to be made fun of, I don't know how it can get any better.
jerryblake - 8/6/2013, 4:53 AM
I have not seen it yet, but I think I might to ...
I'm getting curious about this whole "Lone Ranger is a box office flop" case.
Was it really that bad ?
Or maybe people are just getting tired of Johny ?
Is it because it's a 250 million dollars western ?
(funny thing, the budget was cut down)

Anyway, I don't buy this "it's all critics fault" thing
